Rich Hein assembled a TV audio system for $150 using used components: a $50 Sony receiver, two Polk tower speakers bought together for $100, and a small Episode subwoofer that came with the receiver at no extra cost. He judged it better than the soundbar-and-subwoofer setups he had been considering, which he priced at $300 to $600. That verdict rests on his own listening impressions and one purchase. It is not based on measurements or a controlled comparison. The account appeared in How-To Geek on September 18, 2026, and was syndicated at Yahoo Tech. This guide explains what he bought, what the figures do and do not show, and how a reader could attempt a similar build.
What Hein built and what it cost
The system is a conventional stereo chain with a receiver as the hub. The TV, an Xbox, and other sources connect to the receiver, which drives the speakers and subwoofer. Hein chose the receiver for its Bluetooth support and enough inputs for the TV, the Xbox, and possible future sources.
| Component | Model as reported | Price reported by the author | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Receiver | Sony (exact model not named) | $50, used | Chosen for Bluetooth and input count |
| Left and right towers | Polk Signature S55 and Polk T50 | $100 for both, used | Not a matched pair; Hein says he accepted this for size and value |
| Subwoofer | Episode (exact model not identified) | Included free with the receiver | Supplied enough bass for his room and preferences, in his view |
| Total | $150 | Covers all four items above |
The headline’s “half the price” depends on which soundbar system you compare against. Measured against the $300 low end of the range Hein reported, $150 is half. Against the $600 high end, it is a quarter. These are the prices he saw while shopping in 2026. They are not a market survey, and the account does not give the date of his used purchases.

Hein gives two reasons, both framed as personal impressions rather than test results.

Using the advanced “Customize” option, you can adjust audio details to suit your personal taste, ensuring every sound is tuned exactly how you prefer.
- Fuller sound. He describes the towers as sounding fuller than his previous Vizio soundbar.
- Broader soundstage. Separate left and right speakers, placed apart from each other, gave movies, shows, and music a wider sense of space than the soundbar did.
He also values flexibility. Because each part is separate, he can replace the subwoofer, add a center channel, or add another pair of speakers without replacing the whole system. He does not estimate what those future upgrades would cost or how much they would change performance.
What the account does not establish
- The speakers are not a matched set. A Polk Signature S55 and a Polk T50 are different models. Hein knowingly accepted that compromise. Do not treat this pairing as a recommended matched configuration.
- Two parts are unidentified. The Sony receiver model and the Episode subwoofer model are not disclosed, so no compatibility or specification claims can be drawn from the article.
- No measurements. The article offers no frequency response, loudness, or dialogue-clarity measurements, and no side-by-side listening test against a specific soundbar.
- One used purchase. The $150 total reflects one buyer’s used-market search. Used prices vary by region, condition, and timing, and new equivalents cost more.

Choose the TV output. In the TV’s sound output settings, select an external output such as HDMI ARC or eARC, or optical digital audio, depending on what the TV and receiver both support. The menu names vary by brand. Expected result: the TV’s own speakers go silent and the receiver takes over the audio.

Check the speaker type. Passive tower speakers need speaker wire from the receiver’s speaker terminals. Powered speakers connect with an audio cable instead. The article does not say which type Hein used, so check the labels on the towers before buying cable.
-
Connect the subwoofer. If the receiver has a subwoofer output, connect it to the subwoofer’s line input with an audio cable. Set the subwoofer’s crossover and volume using its own controls, starting at a moderate level. Expected result: bass fills the room without booming on dialogue.

Place the speakers apart. Put the left and right towers at matching distances from your main seating position, with space between them. The separation is the source of the wider soundstage Hein describes. Placement changes the sound, so move the speakers before judging the result.

If something sounds wrong
- No sound from the towers: confirm the receiver is set to the right input and that the speaker wires are seated in the correct terminals, with positive and negative matched at both ends.
- Sound only from one side: check the balance control and whether one speaker’s wire has come loose.
- Bass is missing or muddy: check the subwoofer’s power, the audio cable, and its crossover setting before blaming the speakers.
- Lip-sync is off: check the TV and receiver for audio delay settings, since sound routed through an external receiver can lag the picture.
When a soundbar still makes sense
Hein’s preference is his own, and the setup is not the right choice for every room. A soundbar may suit you better if:
- you have no space for two speakers, a subwoofer, and the cabling between them;
- you want one box, one remote, and no separate receiver to manage;
- you cannot source used components locally and do not want to buy new gear at a higher total cost;
- you want a system that works without any setup beyond a single connection to the TV.
A reader who values separate, upgradeable parts and has room for stereo speakers is the audience Hein’s account best describes.
