Building an AI video-generation product means much more than connecting a prompt box to a model. The work also includes managing slow, asynchronous jobs, translating model-specific controls into a usable interface, handling failures, and deciding where safety checks belong.
The title describes a personal internship and an “80%” contribution, but no project notes establish what that percentage measured, what the platform did, or which choices the intern made. Rather than invent that story, this article explains the engineering lessons supported by current provider documentation—and separates those general product considerations from any claim about a particular internship.
What does “80%” mean in a software project?
A percentage can describe lines of code, tickets completed, features delivered, or an informal share of the work. Those measures are not interchangeable, and none alone says how much of a product was usable or how much responsibility a contributor held. Without a project-specific definition, “80%” cannot be independently interpreted as a technical measure.

To make an internship retrospective concrete, an author should explain the denominator and scope: which components existed, which were included in the estimate, what the intern built, and what teammates or external services supplied. Useful evidence might include a feature list, an architecture diagram, or a specific before-and-after workflow—not an unsupported percentage.

Why video generation needs a job workflow
Text-to-video generation can take long enough that a web request should not be treated like an ordinary fast form submission. Alibaba Cloud Model Studio’s Wan2.7 API reference, last updated September 28, 2026, estimates typical task duration at 1–5 minutes for that API. Its documented pattern is asynchronous: create a task, retain its ID, then poll for the result. The estimate is specific to Wan2.7 and is not an industry-wide performance claim. That pattern has direct product consequences. The interface should acknowledge the request promptly, while a backend tracks its state independently of the user’s browser session. A practical job record can include the provider task ID, selected model, normalized settings, submission time, current state, and either the completed asset location or a useful failure reason.
States a user can understand
- Queued or submitted: the product accepted the request and has a provider-side task identifier.
- Processing: the provider has not returned a final result; the interface can show that work is ongoing without promising a completion time.
- Complete: the result is available, with a path to preview or download it.
- Failed: the user gets a recoverable explanation where possible, rather than a spinner that never ends.
Polling needs a stopping rule and a recovery path. Vercel’s AI SDK video guide, last updated June 25, 2026, suggests allowing at least ten minutes of polling timeout for production variability; this is guidance for that SDK integration, not a universal model guarantee. Alibaba’s Wan2.7 reference says task IDs remain valid for 24 hours and advises against creating duplicate tasks. A client that loses its connection should first recover or resume tracking the existing task when possible; blindly resubmitting can waste time or trigger duplicate work. That validity window applies to the cited API, not to every provider.

What providers expose—and what a product must reconcile
Model integrations differ in capabilities and controls, so a product should not assume every model accepts the same fields or produces the same kind of output. Google’s documentation presents Gemini Omni Flash as a fast option for short video generation and conversational editing, while describing Veo 3.1 as supporting native audio, video extension, frame-specific generation, and image-based direction. Those descriptions are Google’s characterization of its own API, not an independent comparative test. Google AI for Developers’ video-generation documentation
Wan2.7’s API reference documents prompt structure for multiple shots, resolution, aspect ratio, duration, optional audio input, generated background audio when no audio URL is supplied, and negative prompts. Its examples include 720P and 1080P, 16:9, and 10- or 15-second durations; examples should not be mistaken for settings supported by every model or region. A product should validate controls against the selected model rather than expose a single universal form.
A provider-neutral settings layer can make the interface consistent while preserving honest differences: show only supported controls, record which model accepted a setting, and explain when a feature is unavailable. Vercel’s guide similarly notes that support for settings such as aspect ratio, resolution, duration, FPS, and seed varies across providers and models; unsupported settings may be returned as warnings.

Hosted APIs and self-hosted inference are both documented routes, but they move operational responsibility to different parts of the team. The documentation reviewed here does not provide a head-to-head cost, quality, or latency benchmark, so the choice should be evaluated against a product’s own requirements.

In practice, compare the actual candidate models on the factors that affect the product: supported output and controls, latency and job handling, integration maturity, serving ownership, and moderation responsibilities. Avoid treating a provider’s feature list—or one documented hardware configuration—as proof of comparative performance.

Moderation is not only a prompt-box concern. AWS’s Nova Reel responsible-AI service card describes filtering prompts before model invocation and moderating or filtering outputs after generation. It also describes service-level behavior controls including training-data curation, supervised fine-tuning, and privacy and toxicity filters. For a product team, that example highlights two distinct checkpoints: decide whether an input should be sent for generation, then decide whether a returned result is suitable to show or retain. The exact policy, enforcement, and user messaging depend on the product and provider; the AWS card should not be read as a universal implementation recipe.

Lessons to carry into the next build
- Model generation as a durable job. A user’s browser is not a reliable place to hold the only record of work that may take minutes.
- Make controls model-aware. Expose only settings the chosen model supports, and distinguish a missing capability from a failed request.
- Choose serving ownership deliberately. A hosted API and a self-hosted stack are integration choices with different operational responsibilities, not interchangeable labels.
- Design failure and safety paths early. Retrying, duplicate prevention, input filtering, and output handling shape the architecture as much as the happy path.
- Describe contribution with evidence. A retrospective becomes useful when it identifies concrete features, decisions, setbacks, and lessons rather than asking readers to infer what a percentage means.
