Bash can automate repeatable terminal work, and tools such as xdotool and wmctrl can extend scripts to some graphical tasks. But desktop automation is not universal: window actions depend on the display server, desktop environment, and window manager. The “entire desktop” and “hours every week” in this story are the author’s characterization, not independently verified results. Treat the scripts below as practical starting points, test them in a disposable session, and measure your own savings.

What four scripts can—and cannot—automate

The useful distinction is between automating commands and automating graphical interaction. Bash is well suited to repeatable command-line sequences: launch programs, organize files, run backups, or combine utilities. A script’s shebang identifies the interpreter, for example #!/usr/bin/env bash. To run a script, save it, make it executable with chmod +x script-name.sh, then invoke it with ./script-name.sh. Install any external commands it calls and make sure they are available in the script’s PATH.

Graphical actions require more caution. xdotool can search for windows and issue commands to move, resize, or raise them, as well as generate keyboard and pointer input. The Debian trixie xdotool manual documents those operations and warns that some applications may ignore synthetic events sent directly to a window. wmctrl asks the window manager to activate, move, resize, or close windows; its behavior depends on that manager and its configuration. See the wmctrl documentation.

These examples use X11-oriented tools. Before adapting them, identify your session type and desktop/window manager. A script that works in an X11 session is not thereby proven to work in every Linux desktop session or display system. Linux Mint is not a sufficient compatibility description on its own: the relevant details are the Mint edition, session type, and window manager. A Reddit post asking whether xdotool and wmctrl work under Mint is a reader question, not compatibility evidence.

Four scripts to make recurring work repeatable

The examples below show four practical patterns rather than claiming to reproduce a particular author’s unreviewed scripts. They are intentionally modest: each checks its target, avoids running as root, and leaves room for the applications and paths you actually use. Try them in a test account or virtual machine before using them on important work; the Bash scripting guide recommends testing this way and using a non-root account.

1. Start a work session

This launches a short list of applications you regularly use. It requires Bash and the named applications; replace the example commands with installed programs. Run it from a terminal, or assign it a desktop shortcut after testing.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -u

for app in firefox thunderbird; do
  if command -v "$app" >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    "$app" >/dev/null 2>&1 &
  else
    printf 'Not found: %sn' "$app" >&2
  fi
done

Expected result: each available program starts in the background, while missing commands are reported. Inspect the running processes with your system’s process monitor or pgrep -a firefox; close applications normally from their own windows. Running the launcher again may open additional windows, depending on each application.

2. Arrange a known window

wmctrl can request a window move and resize. This example selects a window by its title text; titles can change, so confirm the match before relying on it. Install wmctrl, run in a compatible X11 session, and substitute a distinctive title fragment.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

pattern=${1:?Usage: arrange-window.sh 'title fragment'}
wmctrl -l
wmctrl -r "$pattern" -e 0,80,60,1200,800

The first command lists windows so you can inspect what is eligible; the second asks the window manager to place the matching window at the requested position and size. Window-manager geometry conventions and screen dimensions can affect the result. If the target is wrong or nothing moves, stop and inspect the list rather than broadening the selector blindly. Restore the window with its normal controls or rerun an adjusted command.

3. Move a window to another workspace

Where the window manager provides multiple virtual desktops, wmctrl can request a workspace change. This script lists windows, then moves a specifically selected match to desktop number 1 (desktop numbering is commonly zero-based, but verify the listing and behavior in your session).

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

pattern=${1:?Usage: move-window.sh 'title fragment'}
wmctrl -l
wmctrl -r "$pattern" -t 1

Expected result: a matching window is requested to move to the second listed desktop. If the manager does not expose multiple desktops, or the match is ambiguous, this may fail or act differently. Inspect with wmctrl -l and move the window back through the desktop’s own workspace controls if needed. Tray-minimized windows may behave differently from ordinary visible windows.

4. Fill a web address with keyboard input

This pattern focuses a browser window and types a URL. It depends on wmctrl, xdotool, a compatible X11 session, and a Firefox window whose class can be matched. Synthetic input is more fragile than launching a URL directly; use it only when the keyboard interaction itself is needed.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

url=${1:?Usage: open-address.sh https://example.org}
case "$url" in
  https://*) ;;
  *) printf 'Only https:// URLs are allowedn' >&2; exit 2 ;;
esac

wmctrl -x -a firefox.Firefox
sleep 1
xdotool key --clearmodifiers ctrl+l
xdotool type --clearmodifiers --delay 40 -- "$url"
xdotool key Return

The class selector is preferable to a screen coordinate, but it still depends on the application exposing the expected window class. The wait is a simple accommodation, not a guarantee that the browser is ready. Confirm the address before pressing Enter if you modify this for sensitive destinations. To stop before submission, interrupt the script with Ctrl+C in its terminal; once a URL has been submitted, close or navigate away in the browser. A Linux Bash tutorial demonstrates this focus-and-type approach and suggests selectors, short waits, allow-lists, and dry-run behavior, but it is an illustrative example rather than proof of reliability: Linux Bash: Artificial Intelligence Desktop Automation.

Make window automation less brittle

Window selection, timing, and focus are common failure points. A successful command does not prove that the intended application received the input. The xdotool manual supports scripts that read commands from a file or standard input and use positional arguments and environment variables; it also cautions that applications can ignore generated events sent directly to a window. Its script documentation says, “A script will fail when any command fails.” Handle errors deliberately rather than assuming later commands are safe to run.

  • Prefer a stable window class or other distinctive selector over a title likely to change; avoid screen coordinates where possible.
  • List or search for windows before acting, and verify the selected target. Window-stack order can vary between invocations, so do not assume the first match is always correct.
  • Wait for a window to appear and check that it is the intended window before sending input. A fixed sleep can reduce timing failures but cannot establish readiness.
  • Keep actions narrow. For scripts that execute commands or process user-provided values, use allow-lists and explicit scopes; do not pass unchecked input to a shell.
  • Use a dry-run mode when a script can make consequential changes. Log what it would act on, then enable the action only after checking the target.
  • Keep a recovery path: know how to interrupt the script, close the affected window, or reverse the desktop change before automating it.

How to estimate time saved without guessing

No published, attributable measurement establishes how many hours this four-script workflow saves. The headline’s weekly savings should therefore be read as the author’s personal estimate, not a general result. To calculate your own figure, compare the same recurring tasks before and after automation over a defined observation period.

  1. List the exact tasks the scripts replace, such as opening the same applications, arranging windows, or entering a routine address.
  2. For a baseline period, record how often each task occurs and how long it takes manually. Use a consistent timing method.
  3. After introducing the scripts, record the same task counts and the time spent running, checking, and recovering from them over an equally long period.
  4. Calculate net time saved as manual time avoided minus script execution, verification, and recovery time. Report the observation period and task counts alongside any weekly estimate.

This method yields a personal estimate for your workflow, not a universal productivity statistic. The Bash guide’s broad argument is specifically about tasks performed through terminal shell commands; it should not be read as a claim that every graphical task ought to be automated.

When Bash is the right tool

Use Bash for deterministic command-line work and coordination. Use xdotool when a tested X11 workflow needs synthetic keyboard or pointer input. Use wmctrl when the task is a window-manager request such as activation, placement, or workspace movement. These are different capabilities, not competing universal solutions, and the cited manuals establish no benchmark or universal reliability winner.

If a task can be done by launching a program with arguments or calling a command-line interface, that is usually easier to verify than simulated typing. Add GUI automation only where the graphical interaction is necessary and your session supports it. Validate each script in the actual desktop session where it will run, and keep the scope narrow enough that a mistaken match is easy to notice and undo.
