An ambulance was stopped in Silchar on September 30, 2026, to make way for Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy. Sarma apologised to the patient and family, ordered an inquiry and said action would be taken against those responsible. Four Assam Police personnel were reported suspended pending a departmental inquiry. The patient died the next day, but the available reports do not establish that the ambulance halt caused the death.
What happened in Silchar
Reports said the ambulance was halted during Sarma’s convoy movement in Silchar on September 30. Sarma called the incident unacceptable. News coverage attributed this statement to a post he made on X that day: “This is unacceptable, and I apologise to the patient and their family.” The wording is reported by the news outlet; the original post was not independently verified here. [c001]
Accounts differ on how long the ambulance was held. The Times of India reported a halt of about four minutes, while The Sentinel reported Sarma’s claim that it lasted no more than 30 seconds. These are attributed accounts, not a settled duration. [c004] [c005]
What action followed
Inquiry and suspensions
Sarma said he had ordered an inquiry and action against those responsible. Four Assam Police personnel were reported suspended pending a departmental inquiry into alleged negligence of traffic duty. The outcome of that inquiry is not established in the available reporting. [c001] [c002]

Direction on emergency vehicles
A subsequent direction from the Chief Minister’s Office was reported to tell district commissioners and senior police officials to ensure ambulances and other emergency vehicles are not obstructed for VIP convoy movement. It was also reported to say the Chief Minister’s convoy could be paused to let emergency vehicles pass. The underlying official order was not independently reviewed. [c003]
What is known about the patient’s death
The patient was reported to have died at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on October 1, the day after the ambulance halt. Sarma said the halt was not connected to the death. The reporting available does not establish medical causation, so the sequence alone does not show that the delay caused the patient’s death. [c004] [c005]
