The September 14, 2023 episode of CyberScoop’s Safe Mode marks a decade of I Am the Cavalry’s work on security where connected technology meets public safety. Its title also points to a Microsoft mystery and Trickbot sanctions, but the episode page does not identify those stories in detail or provide a transcript. The Microsoft reference is plausibly the Storm-0558 signing-key investigation; that identification is an inference, not a confirmed description of the episode.

What the episode says about I Am the Cavalry

CyberScoop describes the episode as a conversation among I Am the Cavalry co-founders Josh Corman and Beau Woods and senior editor Elias Groll. Its synopsis looks back at a decade of work on the security of connected devices, including fridges, medical devices and power stations, and the risks of connecting devices without sufficient attention to security. CyberScoop’s episode page is the source for that description; it does not include a transcript or a segment-by-segment account.

I Am the Cavalry is a grassroots initiative focused on digital security where it intersects with public safety and human life. Its 2014 open letter to the automotive industry framed the stakes in practical terms: “We believe a compromise of non-critical systems (like entertainment) should never adversely affect critical/physical systems (like braking).” The letter’s Segmentation & Isolation principle calls for keeping less-critical functions from endangering safety-critical ones. The initiative’s automotive open letter also describes its purpose as ensuring technologies with the potential to affect public safety and human life are worthy of trust.

What the “Microsoft mystery” likely refers to

The likely reference is Microsoft’s September 6, 2023 report on Storm-0558, a China-based threat actor that acquired a Microsoft account signing key and used it to access email accounts. The connection is plausible because the report appeared shortly before the episode, but CyberScoop’s synopsis does not confirm that the guests discussed this incident specifically.

Microsoft said on September 6 that it had completed its major technical investigations and that its then-current customer guidance had not changed. In an update dated March 12, 2024, Microsoft said further research had not changed the earlier guidance and had not revealed additional impact to Microsoft or its customers. Those are Microsoft’s conclusions, not an independent finding. See Microsoft’s Storm-0558 investigation report and update.

What happened with Trickbot sanctions

On September 7, 2023, the U.S. Treasury Department announced, in coordination with the United Kingdom, sanctions against 11 individuals it associated with the Russia-based Trickbot cybercrime group. Treasury also said the Justice Department was unsealing indictments against nine individuals in Trickbot and Conti schemes. The sanctions and indictments were related enforcement actions, but they are not the same thing: a sanctions designation is an administrative action, while an indictment is an allegation of criminal conduct, not proof of guilt. Treasury’s announcement and the Justice Department’s account describe the actions.

The Justice Department said Conti ransomware had been used against more than 900 victims worldwide. That figure describes Conti victims; it should not be presented as a count of Trickbot victims.

How the three strands fit together

The episode’s documented subject is I Am the Cavalry’s decade of safety-focused connected-device work. The Microsoft investigation and Trickbot action are contemporaneous events that its title flags, but the short synopsis does not establish exactly how the guests discussed either one.

The distinction matters: I Am the Cavalry’s automotive framework is about organizational capabilities and manufacturer practices, not advice on which consumer device to buy. Its five areas are safety by design, third-party collaboration, evidence capture, security updates, and segmentation and isolation. The framework focuses on building security into products and organizational processes so connected technologies are less likely to create safety risks.

For additional context, Corman’s May 18, 2022 written testimony to the U.S. Senate HELP Committee used the phrase “Cyber Safety is Patient Safety.” That is language from his testimony, not a verified quotation from the 2023 podcast. Corman’s written Senate testimony identifies him as the witness and as I Am the Cavalry’s founder.
