For a quick Hyprland screenshot, start with grim and slurp; for video, choose a recorder such as OBS Studio, wf-recorder, or wl-screenrec. The right option depends on whether you need a still image or a recording, an annotation interface, or a portal-based capture workflow.
This is a practical shortlist drawn from the Hyprland Wiki’s guidance, not an official ranking or a claim that eight equivalent apps compete. Some entries are complete utilities; others are small tools combined into a capture pipeline. The Wiki’s Screenshots & Recording page was modified on August 26, 2026. Setup details can vary by distribution and version.
Choose by capture job, not by ranking
- Fast region screenshot: Use
grimwithslurp; addwl-copyto put the image on the clipboard or an annotation tool if you want to mark it up. - Screenshot helper: Grimblast is Hyprland’s more complete screenshot utility.
- Screenshot annotation: Satty and Flameshot offer annotation workflows, though their setup and integration differ.
- Video recording: OBS Studio uses PipeWire and the desktop portal;
wf-recorderandwl-screenrecare direct recorder options.
The Hyprland Wiki groups screenshot and recording utilities together and names OBS, wf-recorder, and wl-screenrec for video, and Grimblast for screenshots. The options below are organized by what they do rather than assigned performance scores; the cited documentation does not establish a universal winner.
Eight Hyprland screen capture options
1. grim + slurp: a minimal screenshot pipeline
grim captures the image, while slurp lets you select a region. They are two separate tools used together, rather than one standalone application. Hyprland documents piping the capture to swappy for annotation or wl-copy for clipboard output.

Choose this combination if you want a direct, composable workflow and do not need a single integrated interface.
2. Grimblast: a Hyprland-oriented screenshot helper
The Hyprland FAQ presents Grimblast as a more complete screenshot utility after showing a grim and slurp example. It is a reasonable place to start if you want a helper within the Hyprland ecosystem. The cited guidance does not support a detailed feature-by-feature comparison with the other screenshot options.
3. Satty: annotation after capture
Hyprland describes Satty as inspired by swappy and Flameshot, and as an almost drop-in replacement for swappy. Its documented pipeline takes grim output, opens it in Satty, copies it with wl-copy, and saves a timestamped PNG. Consider it when annotating a captured image is central to your workflow.

4. Flameshot: screenshot capture with an annotation UI
Flameshot includes a built-in annotation interface, but its capture behavior on Hyprland depends on XDG portal setup. Flameshot’s help calls for xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland. Its project also documents a window-rule workaround for multi-display setups, so display arrangements may require adjustment rather than working identically out of the box.

Satty and Flameshot are both annotation choices, but the cited documentation does not provide a measured feature comparison between them.
5. HyprCapture: an integrated screenshot and recording utility
The Hyprland Wiki describes HyprCapture as a Hyprland-oriented utility for screenshots and recording. It may suit someone looking for an integrated workflow instead of assembling smaller tools. The documentation cited here does not establish further feature details.
6. OBS Studio: a GUI recording workflow
Hyprland documents OBS capture through PipeWire and the desktop portal. The Wiki lists pipewire, wireplumber, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland, and qt6-wayland as components to install. OBS is the option to consider when you want a broader GUI recording workflow; the cited guidance does not establish performance or hardware-encoding claims.

Hyprland calls wf-recorder a lightweight Wayland screen recorder and documents commands for full-screen and selected-region recording. Pair it with slurp when you need to choose a region. This is a direct recorder workflow rather than an annotation-focused screenshot tool.

8. wl-screenrec: a wlroots-focused recorder
The Hyprland Wiki lists wl-screenrec as a high-performance wlroots screen recorder featuring hardware encoding, with examples for whole-screen and region recording. That description makes it relevant to Hyprland, but it is not evidence for a generalized speed ranking against the other choices.
Take a region screenshot or copy it to the clipboard
These examples follow the commands documented by the Hyprland Wiki. They require the component commands to be installed and available in your shell.
Send a selected screenshot to swappy
grim -g "$(slurp)" - | swappy -f -This selects an area, captures it, and passes the image to swappy for annotation.
Copy a selected screenshot with wl-copy
grim -g "$(slurp -d)" - | wl-copyThis sends the selected capture to the Wayland clipboard. wl-copy is a supporting workflow component, not an additional pick in this list.

Set up OBS capture through PipeWire and the desktop portal
For the OBS workflow documented by Hyprland, install or confirm the presence of pipewire, wireplumber, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland, and qt6-wayland. Package names and portal behavior can differ across distributions and software versions, so use your distribution’s package guidance alongside the Hyprland documentation.
If OBS cannot access the screen, check that the portal and Hyprland permission configuration are working before concluding that OBS itself is incompatible. Flameshot’s Hyprland help likewise calls out XDG portal components for capture.
Which option should you start with?
- For a quick still image of a region: Start with
grimandslurp. - For clipboard output: Add
wl-copyto the screenshot pipeline. - For markup: Use a workflow with Satty or Flameshot; check portal requirements and display setup where relevant.
- For a more complete Hyprland screenshot helper: Try Grimblast.
- For video: Choose OBS for the documented PipeWire/portal GUI workflow, or use
wf-recorderorwl-screenrecfor direct recorder workflows.
The Hyprland documentation does not establish benchmark results or a single best tool for every setup. Base the choice on capture type, interface preference, annotation or clipboard needs, and whether the required portal stack is functioning.
