The choice is not simply “fund versus PMS.” Portfolio Management Services (PMS) is a client-specific, contract-based management relationship. “Hybrid Long-Short Fund” is an investment-strategy label; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the product is a mutual-fund or specialised investment-fund strategy, an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), or another legal structure. Choose only after identifying the wrapper, reading its current documents and deciding whether you need an individually managed portfolio or a pooled vehicle.

For a separately managed mandate tailored to your objectives, PMS may be the more natural fit. For pooled access to a documented strategy that combines long and short positions, a hybrid long-short product may be more suitable. Neither label guarantees returns, lower costs or superior performance.

What PMS and a hybrid long-short fund actually mean

PMS is a regulated service relationship

SEBI’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Portfolio Managers, dated September 20, 2024, defines a portfolio manager as a body corporate that, under a client contract, advises, directs or undertakes portfolio management. The contract and disclosure document govern the services, investment authority, fees, risks, custody arrangements and reporting.

In discretionary PMS, the manager independently makes investment decisions for each client within the agreed mandate. In non-discretionary PMS, the manager acts on the client’s directions. Some providers also offer advisory arrangements in which the client retains execution and decision responsibility. These are materially different experiences even though all may be marketed under the broad PMS heading.

“Hybrid Long-Short” describes a strategy, not a legal form

A hybrid strategy generally combines more than one asset class and adds the ability to take short exposure. A SEBI-hosted draft Infinity Hybrid Long-Short Fund investment-strategy document from April 2026 describes equity and equity-related instruments alongside debt and money-market instruments, with limited short exposure in equity and debt through derivatives. It also states that the investment objective is not assured.

That document is an example of one proposed mandate, not a universal definition. SEBI’s February 26, 2026 circular describes hybrid mutual-fund schemes broadly as investing in a mix of asset classes; the narrower long-short label introduces derivatives and short-position considerations that ordinary hybrid descriptions may not cover. Before investing, identify the product’s current offer document, regulator category, dealing and custody structure, and permitted instruments.

How the two approaches differ in practice

Comparison point PMS Hybrid long-short strategy
Meaning of the term A client-specific management or advisory service under a written agreement. A strategy description; the actual legal wrapper must be verified.
Ownership and portfolio SEBI describes management of each client’s portfolio; the agreement and custody documents determine the precise setup. Often accessed through units in a pooled scheme when structured as a fund, but the offer document is conclusive.
Decision authority Discretionary or client-directed, depending on the mandate. Set by the scheme documents and the wrapper’s rules; the label alone says nothing about your individual control.
Short exposure Depends on the mandate, instruments permitted and the manager’s stated process. The cited SEBI-hosted example uses limited derivative short exposure; another product may set different limits or prohibit it.
Investment access Depends on the current PMS eligibility rules and provider terms. Depends on whether the product is a mutual-fund or specialised-fund strategy, an AIF or another structure.
Fees and reporting Set out in the client agreement and disclosure document, including performance information and related-party disclosures. Set out in the scheme or fund documents, including management and performance fees, benchmark, dealing terms and risk disclosures.
Liquidity Depends on the securities held, mandate and custody or withdrawal terms. Depends on the wrapper’s redemption schedule, gates, notice periods, lock-ins and the liquidity of the underlying positions.
Key risks Manager selection, concentration, market movements and portfolio liquidity. Market volatility, manager skill, leverage, liquidity and short squeezes, in addition to ordinary investment risks.

The table is a due-diligence map, not a claim that one vehicle always wins. Two products carrying similar names can have very different leverage, concentration, redemption and fee terms.

Regulatory wrapper: the question to answer before comparing returns

SEBI’s PMS regulations and its AIF regulations are separate frameworks. A long-short strategy is not automatically a Category III AIF, and PMS is not automatically a long-short strategy. Category III AIFs are described by SEBI as capable of using diverse or complex trading strategies and leverage, including derivatives, but that description does not identify every product using a long-short label.

Rank #2

Ask the provider to name the exact legal entity, registration or scheme category and the document currently governing the investment. Check whether the document is a final offer document, a draft, or a marketing summary. Confirm the regulator, trustee or custodian arrangements, valuation method, dealing frequency and the person responsible for approving valuation and risk controls.

Minimum investment figures require a current check

SEBI’s investor-facing PMS page currently surfaces a ₹50 lakh minimum, while a surfaced text of the portfolio-manager regulations states ₹5 lakh. The available materials do not safely reconcile those figures. Do not treat either number as settled current law without checking the latest consolidated SEBI regulations, official investor guidance and the provider’s current disclosure document. Ask the provider to identify the rule and date on which its stated minimum is based.

SEBI’s May 2012 announcement about AIF regulations reported a ₹1 crore investor minimum. That is historical context, not a current Category III threshold: the AIF regulations were amended, including an amendment dated July 14, 2026. Verify the current rule and the specific fund documents rather than carrying the 2012 figure into a present-day decision. A threshold applicable to one wrapper cannot be transferred to another.

What a hybrid long-short strategy is trying to do

Combining long and short positions

A long position benefits when an asset rises. A short position is intended to benefit when the asset falls, but a rise in the shorted asset creates a loss. Derivatives can create short exposure without borrowing and selling the physical security, yet they introduce margin, expiry, counterparty, basis and collateral considerations.

The cited hybrid example also combines equity with debt and money-market instruments. That mix can make the portfolio behave differently from a pure equity fund, but “hybrid” does not mean low risk. Read the permitted allocation ranges, hedging definition, gross and net exposure limits, derivative instruments, collateral policy and concentration caps. A strategy may be described as “limited” short exposure while still producing material losses under stressed market conditions if leverage is used.

Why the objective is not a promise

The April 2026 draft strategy document expressly says its investment objective is not assured. Treat every target, range or stated intention as conditional on the mandate and market conditions. There is no basis for assuming that a long-short approach will make money in falling markets: an incorrect short, a crowded trade, financing costs or a sudden rebound can overwhelm gains elsewhere.

What PMS lets you customise

Mandate design

A PMS agreement can specify objectives, restrictions and service levels for your account. Depending on the provider, you may be able to set a concentration ceiling, exclude sectors, require a minimum cash level, restrict derivatives or define a tax-aware transition plan. These terms are negotiated or selected within the provider’s permitted framework; they are not guaranteed to be available in every PMS.

Discretionary versus non-discretionary control

Discretionary PMS is useful when you want the manager to act without obtaining approval for each trade, provided you are comfortable with the mandate and monitoring process. Non-discretionary PMS preserves client direction but requires timely decisions and can leave the portfolio less consistent when approvals are delayed. Read how the agreement handles rejected trades, corporate actions, cash calls, rebalancing and a change in your instructions.

Account-level concentration

Because a PMS is managed per client, the portfolio may be more concentrated than a pooled scheme. That can make the portfolio closely reflect a high-conviction mandate, but it also makes a single issuer, sector or position more consequential. Ask for current concentration limits, the largest positions, turnover policy and circumstances in which the manager may depart from the model portfolio.

Costs, performance and reporting: compare like with like

PMS regulations require a written client agreement and disclosures covering services, risks, fees and related terms. The regulations allow fixed fees, return-based fees or a combination, and prohibit managers from guaranteeing or assuring returns. The disclosure document should also address portfolio risks, related-party matters and performance information.

For either vehicle, build a total-cost view rather than comparing a single management-fee number. Check:

  • Fixed management fees and the balance on which each fee is calculated.
  • Performance fees, hurdles, crystallisation dates and high-water-mark rules, if applicable.
  • Brokerage, exchange, transaction, custody, fund-accounting, audit and administration charges.
  • Derivative costs, financing or stock-borrow charges and collateral costs.
  • Taxes, stamp duty, securities transaction tax and any charges on transfer or exit.
  • Exit loads, notice-period costs, lock-in consequences, gates and other withdrawal charges.

Performance should be dated and measured against the correct benchmark after applicable fees, with the same treatment of cash, taxes and leverage. A PMS client’s return reflects that client’s deposits, withdrawals, tax lots and mandate restrictions; a pooled scheme’s published return follows its unit-valuation methodology. Those figures are not automatically comparable. Request the calculation method, benchmark rationale, maximum drawdown, period covered and whether returns are audited or otherwise independently verified.

Risks that deserve special attention

Market and manager risk

Both structures depend on investment decisions and market prices. A manager can be wrong, a thesis can take longer than expected and a portfolio can lose money even when its process is followed. Investigate the team’s tenure, decision-making authority, succession plan, compliance history and the separation of trading, valuation and custody functions.

Leverage and derivatives

Leverage magnifies gains and losses and can force trades at an unfavourable time. Derivative positions may require margin when the market moves against them. Ask for gross and net exposure, margin policies, liquidation triggers, counterparty limits and stress-test scenarios. Do not infer these controls from the strategy name.

Short squeeze and gap risk

The Titanium Hybrid Long-Short Fund strategy document hosted by SEBI identifies short squeeze among the risks of a long-short approach. A short squeeze occurs when a rapidly rising security forces short sellers to close positions, potentially accelerating the rise. Overnight gaps, trading halts or a lack of borrow can prevent an orderly exit. Ask how the strategy handles hard-to-borrow securities, recalls, corporate actions and position limits.

Liquidity and valuation

Liquidity risk matters in both a separately managed portfolio and a pooled scheme. A security may be difficult to sell at its displayed value, particularly during stress. For a fund, review redemption frequency, notice periods, gates, suspension powers and valuation of less-liquid instruments. For PMS, ask who controls cash raising, how withdrawals are processed and whether selling a concentrated position could materially affect the price.

Which option may fit your circumstances?

PMS may fit when you need an individual mandate

  • You want the portfolio built around your tax position, exclusions, cash-flow needs or concentration limits.
  • You are prepared to meet the applicable minimum and review a detailed agreement and disclosure document.
  • You value direct account-level reporting and accept responsibility for monitoring a manager.
  • You understand that individual customisation can produce concentration, turnover and tracking differences from a model portfolio.

A pooled hybrid long-short product may fit when you prefer a defined scheme

  • You want access to a documented multi-asset strategy without approving each trade.
  • You accept the wrapper’s dealing schedule, minimum, fees, valuation process and redemption restrictions.
  • You understand derivatives and short exposure and can tolerate losses when those positions move against the strategy.
  • You prefer scheme-level reporting and diversification rules to a bespoke account.

Neither is suitable if the basic terms are unclear

Pause if the provider cannot show the current offer or disclosure document, explain the wrapper, identify all charges, state the leverage and derivative limits, or describe how withdrawals are handled. A promise of assured returns is inconsistent with the PMS regulatory requirement that returns cannot be guaranteed or assured and should be treated as a serious warning sign.

A practical comparison process

  1. Define the vehicle you are seeking. Decide whether you want a separately managed account or units in a pooled scheme. Do not start with the marketing label.
  2. Identify the legal wrapper. Record the regulator category, registration details, trustee or custodian, valuation agent and the exact current document.
  3. Check eligibility and minimums. Verify the latest PMS rule or the fund’s applicable threshold from current official material. Do not rely on an old AIF announcement or a search-result snippet.
  4. Map the mandate. Write down asset classes, long and short limits, leverage, derivatives, concentration, cash, hedging, permitted issuers and use of external funds or securities lending.
  5. Calculate total costs. Put fixed, performance, transaction, custody, financing, tax and exit charges into one annual and one transaction-level estimate.
  6. Test liquidity. Note dealing days, notice periods, lock-ins, gates, suspension rights, settlement timing and the process for a large withdrawal.
  7. Interrogate performance data. Request dated, fee-adjusted returns, benchmark, drawdown, volatility and methodology. Ensure the periods and leverage treatment are comparable.
  8. Assess governance and people. Review manager experience, key-person provisions, conflicts, related-party disclosures, valuation controls, audit arrangements and complaint channels.
  9. Model an adverse scenario. Ask what happens if the short book rises sharply, margin increases, a holding becomes illiquid or many investors seek redemption simultaneously.
  10. Document your decision. Keep the agreement, disclosure document, fee schedule, risk acknowledgment and answers to your questions. Recheck them when the mandate or provider changes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every long-short fund is a Category III AIF.
  • Assuming every PMS manager runs a long-short or derivatives strategy.
  • Using the historical ₹1 crore AIF figure as a current universal minimum.
  • Choosing on a headline return without checking benchmark, leverage, fees, dates and withdrawal terms.
  • Equating a hybrid asset mix with capital protection or low volatility.
  • Ignoring the difference between discretionary and non-discretionary decision authority.
  • Comparing a customised PMS account with a pooled scheme without adjusting for cash flows, taxes, concentration and valuation method.
  • Signing before reading the provisions on performance fees, high-water marks, related parties, custody, conflicts and termination.

Bottom line for an Indian investor

Choose PMS when the central requirement is an individually managed mandate and you are willing to evaluate the agreement, manager and account-level risks. Choose a hybrid long-short product only after confirming its legal wrapper and accepting its specific rules for shorting, derivatives, leverage, liquidity, fees and redemptions. The strategy label is not enough, and neither vehicle is inherently better. A current primary disclosure document, a verified eligibility threshold and a clear understanding of worst-case outcomes are prerequisites for a defensible decision. Consider qualified, situation-specific advice before investing.
