The Hunter Exam is the dangerous, multi-stage qualification at the start of Hunter x Hunter; Nen enters later, as a concealed final requirement in VIZ’s summaries. Gon passes the visible exam, then studies Nen with Killua under Wing at Heaven’s Arena. VIZ’s descriptions distinguish being certified after the exam from being officially recognized as a true Hunter after mastering Nen, so passing the public stages is not the whole story.
What is the Hunter Exam in Hunter x Hunter?
It is a fictional qualification process for people seeking a Hunter license, presented as a sequence of demanding stages rather than a single test. VIZ’s 2018 recap describes physical and mental challenges that include endurance trials, encounters with man-eating animals, puzzles, and deadly contests. The stages can put applicants in serious danger, and only a small fraction succeed.
VIZ’s official series page gives the in-world figure as less than one in one hundred thousand able to pass the qualification exam. VIZ does not state a publication year for that figure. It is franchise context from the publisher, not a real-world pass rate or a current annual statistic.
Why the candidates take the risk
- Gon wants to find his father, who is a Hunter.
- Killua enters the exam on a whim.
- Leorio wants money to attend medical school.
- Kurapika seeks justice connected to the Kurta Clan.
Their different motives give the exam stakes beyond winning a license: each candidate is pursuing a personal goal that the others do not share.

How do you unlock Nen?
Within the story, Nen is the ability to control the life energy—called aura—that suffuses living things. VIZ introduces it in the Heaven’s Arena arc, where Gon and Killua need to learn Nen to advance in the tower. Wing teaches them.
VIZ describes Heaven’s Arena as “a tower combat arena, where the victors ascend floors while the losers stay down below.” That setting gives the boys a reason to train, but the Nen lessons also connect back to the Hunter Exam’s hidden requirement.
Does Gon learn Nen during the Hunter Exam?
No—not during the publicly described exam stages. In VIZ’s account, Gon and Killua study Nen with Wing after the exam, at Heaven’s Arena. VIZ’s description of Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 7 says that when Gon completes Wing’s Nen teachings, he also passes the Hunter Exam’s final, secret test. The visible exam and the Nen instruction are therefore separate parts of the sequence in these summaries.

Do you need Nen to become a Hunter?
VIZ’s summaries use two formulations that should be kept distinct. The 2018 recap says Gon is certified after the exam, but also says he cannot be officially recognized as a true Hunter until he learns and masters Nen. VIZ’s Heaven’s Arena feature likewise connects official recognition with mastering Nen, while its volume 7 description calls the Nen lessons the secret final test.
Taken together, the publisher’s wording presents Nen as a concealed or post-exam requirement: Gon passes the visible qualification, then completes the hidden test through Nen training. It does not mean the public stages themselves teach Nen.

Gon and Killua continue to Heaven’s Arena, where Wing teaches them Nen as they seek to advance through the tower. The training resolves the hidden-test thread in VIZ’s account and begins a new challenge centered on combat and aura control.
