Hundreds of people rallied outside the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood on 1 October 2026 as University of Edinburgh staff entered a five-week strike over proposed programme and staffing cuts. The Morning Star described the turnout as “hundreds”; its report does not provide an independently verified count.
What happened at Holyrood
The rally took place outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on 1 October, the fourth day of the strike, according to the Morning Star report. Its caption says University and College Union (UCU) members and student supporters from universities across Scotland took part.

Proposed programme closures
UCU Edinburgh said 90 programmes faced closure. A Scottish Parliament motion lodged by Kate Nevens on 24 September identified the affected area as the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and cited postgraduate diplomas in inclusive education for deaf learners and visually impaired learners as examples of proposed closures. What the parliamentary motion says
The motion records concerns about the proposed course closures and the possible effect on staff and learners. It also says the university had confirmed earlier in 2026 that it was not in financial deficit. That statement is the motion’s account; it does not explain the university’s rationale for its savings plan.
