If Hulu looks unusually dark on your Roku TV, first check the picture mode while the video is playing. Roku TVs can use different modes for standard and HDR video, and picture settings may be saved separately for each input. Try a brighter mode before changing advanced controls. The available settings depend on your TV model; the sources reviewed do not establish a Hulu-specific Roku defect.
Check whether the darkness is limited to Hulu
Play a comparable title in another streaming app, then check another title in Hulu if one is available. This comparison helps narrow down where the problem appears; it does not by itself identify a cause. Note whether the image is dark across all apps, only in Hulu, or only for one title before changing settings.
Also note whether the video is HDR and whether Hulu is running through the Roku TV’s built-in app or a separate Roku player connected by HDMI. Those details determine which picture settings and troubleshooting steps apply.

Change the picture mode during playback
- Start the Hulu video that looks dark so the TV is displaying the relevant content.
- Press the Star/Options button on the Roku remote to open the picture settings. Menu names and available choices vary by model.
- Try a brighter available picture mode, such as Standard or Vivid, and compare the image in the room where you watch. Roku describes Movie mode as ideal for darker rooms and a cinema-oriented image; it may look dimmer in a bright room. Roku’s picture settings guidance explains the available modes.
Roku notes that picture modes can be stored separately for each input. Adjust the mode while viewing the affected playback context rather than assuming a setting changed elsewhere will carry over.

If the Hulu video is HDR, check its HDR picture mode
On supported Roku TVs, HDR10 and Dolby Vision content can use HDR-specific picture modes distinct from standard-content modes. Roku describes HDR Dark as balanced and closest to a cinema experience, while Normal or Bright are brighter alternatives. If HDR playback looks too dim, select a brighter HDR mode and compare the result. Roku’s picture-mode guide describes these options.
Do not assume that changing the standard picture mode will change HDR playback: check the mode while the HDR video is playing.

Inspect other HDR controls only if your TV offers them
If a brighter HDR mode does not help, Roku’s dim-HDR troubleshooting guidance recommends checking HDR Brightness, Color Temperature, and Local Dimming where those controls are available. Local dimming is limited to supported models, and menu placement can differ. Roku’s guidance for a dim HDR image covers these controls.
Roku also lists disabling HDR as a troubleshooting step for persistent dim HDR playback on supported devices. Treat this as a reversible diagnostic change: if it does not improve the image, restore the previous setting. The steps and options depend on the device and TV model; consult the relevant Roku instructions rather than expecting a universal menu path.

If you cannot find Local Dimming, that does not necessarily indicate a fault. Roku says the control is absent from the Advanced picture settings submenu when the TV does not support the feature. Roku’s advanced picture controls guidance explains this limitation.
Use HDMI checks only with a separate Roku player
If Hulu runs on a standalone Roku player connected to the TV, check the TV’s software and HDR configuration for that HDMI input. Roku also advises using a Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for supported 4K HDR connections when an unsuitable cable is causing poor signal performance. Roku’s HDR setup guidance for players addresses this setup.

These cable checks do not apply to Hulu running in the Roku TV’s built-in app. Do not buy a cable or replace equipment based only on a dark image from built-in playback.
What to tell support if the image is still dark
If picture adjustments do not resolve the issue, gather these details before contacting Roku or Hulu support:

- Your Roku TV model.
- Whether Hulu is running on the built-in TV app or an external Roku player over HDMI.
- Whether other apps and Hulu titles also look dark.
- Whether the affected video is HDR, if the TV or playback screen identifies it as such.
- Which picture mode and HDR controls you tried, and whether they changed the image.
Roku’s guidance supports general display troubleshooting, but no official Hulu guidance for this exact symptom was identified. Without a model and a comparison across apps and content, the cause cannot be narrowed to a single Hulu-specific explanation.
