Instead of starting a full recording, it keeps a short rolling audio buffer in memory; press Option-Command-H to open its heads-up display and replay the recent past. That is the app’s intended distinction: “You’re not deciding to record, you’re deciding to replay.”
The description comes from developer Varshith V Hegde, who introduced Huh? in a September 13, 2026 DEV Community article. It is a developer account, not an independent product test. The post describes an early-access project and lists remaining distribution work, so it does not establish that Huh? is now generally available or what it currently costs.
What problem is Huh? meant to solve?
In a conversation, you may be writing notes or looking away when someone mentions a link, name, or instruction. Asking them to repeat it interrupts the flow; trying to reconstruct it later may not work. Huh? is built for that brief gap: it preserves a recent slice of audio so you can listen again without asking the speaker to rewind.
Hegde describes the motivation this way: “I didn’t need them to repeat it. I needed the last thirty seconds of audio sitting in memory, ready to replay.” The app is therefore a short-term replay tool, not a described replacement for a meeting recorder, searchable archive, or AI meeting assistant.

How does the replay buffer work?
According to the developer, Huh? continuously maintains a rolling buffer containing between 30 seconds and two minutes of audio. When the buffer fills, newer audio replaces the oldest audio. Pressing Option-Command-H opens a heads-up display for replaying the recent audio. Playback can be slowed to 0.75x or 0.5x without changing pitch, which may help when checking a name or fast-spoken detail.
Hegde estimates that a 48 kHz audio source uses about 5.5 MB of memory for a 30-second buffer and about 22 MB for a two-minute buffer. Those are the developer’s estimates, not measurements from an independent test.

Which audio can it capture?
The developer says users can choose among three capture sources:
- One application: capture audio from a selected app.
- System-wide audio: capture sound from across the Mac.
- Microphone: capture what the microphone hears.
The article does not say an external microphone is required. It also does not provide a complete compatibility list for audio sources or applications.

Can Huh? transcribe the replay?
The described app offers two optional on-device transcription routes. Hegde says a transcript can be clicked to seek to the corresponding point in playback.

The speed figures are measurements reported by Hegde, not a controlled independent benchmark; the post does not specify all test conditions needed to generalize them to other Macs or audio. The developer also reports addressing a long-audio issue encountered with Apple’s recognizer by splitting audio into chunks of approximately 40 seconds. That is an account of this app’s development, not a general finding about Apple speech recognition.

What does the developer say about audio privacy?
Hegde says audio stays in RAM and is not written to disk or uploaded unless the user explicitly saves a clip. The post identifies downloading a Whisper model from Settings as a possible network request. If the user saves a clip, the app can export it as AAC, with WAV as a fallback.
These are the developer’s descriptions of the app’s behavior, not the result of an independent security audit. The post does not establish that the app’s handling has been externally verified.

What is known about performance and implementation?
The developer describes Huh? as a Swift and SwiftUI app using an NSPanel, CoreAudio process taps, AVAudioEngine, a lock-free ring buffer, and optional WhisperKit. These implementation details are claims in the developer’s post; the source code was not independently inspected for this article.
Hegde reports that, on an M1 Pro with 16 GB of memory, the app used about 13 MB while idle, with about 16 MB added by a full 120-second ring buffer, about 46 MB after an Apple transcript settled, and about 200 MB with Whisper Base loaded. The post also says the app drops Whisper pipelines after about 150 seconds of idle time. These are developer-reported figures for that setup, not promises for other hardware or workloads.
Is Huh? available to download, and how much does it cost?
The September 13, 2026 post refers to early access and asks readers to request it. It also says the app still needed Developer ID signing and notarization for general distribution, testing on macOS 15 hardware, an updater, and a landing-page demo. That post does not confirm whether those tasks were completed later, so current availability should be checked with the developer before relying on a download link.
The post discusses possible prices rather than confirming a live offer: $5 for early adopters, $12–$15 after notarization and polish, and $24 shown in site copy. None of those figures is established there as a current checkout price. Hegde describes an intended payment flow using Dodo Payments, with a webhook to issue and email a license key and offline verification in the app; the post does not confirm that checkout is live.
Who might find this useful?
Huh? may suit Mac users who often miss brief spoken details while taking notes, especially if replaying a recent moment is more useful than keeping a full recording. The described capture choices also make its potential use broader than meetings, including lectures or podcasts, though the developer’s post does not establish independent testing across those situations.
