The Huawei MatePad Pro 12-inch pairs an exceptionally thin, light body with a sharp 12-inch PaperMatte OLED display and capable creative and productivity apps. Its familiar caveat is significant: Google Play Store and Google Mobile Services are not built in. It is most compelling for buyers who value the hardware and Huawei’s software ecosystem, and who have checked that their essential apps work on the configuration sold in their region.
What the MatePad Pro 12-inch is—and what it isn’t
This review concerns the MatePad Pro 12-inch, covered by Aki Ukita for Yanko Design on October 2, 2026. It is not the separate MatePad Pro 12.2 (2025); their names and specifications should not be treated as interchangeable. Huawei’s Global product page describes this model as a 12-inch Flexible OLED PaperMatte tablet.
The short version: the screen and portability are the draw, while app compatibility is the decision point. Huawei’s specifications describe a notably slim device; the review’s hands-on impressions praise its display and comfortable everyday use. But if your work or study depends on Google apps, the absence of built-in Google services deserves more weight than any display specification.
Display and design: the hardware’s strongest case
Huawei lists a 12-inch Flexible OLED panel with 3036 × 1952 resolution, a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, and peak brightness of up to 1600 nits. These are manufacturer-listed maximum specifications, not guarantees of what every app or viewing condition will show. The reviewer describes the display as sharp and bright, with PaperMatte reducing distracting reflections while preserving color.

PaperMatte is Huawei’s diffuse-reflection screen treatment, intended to make the display easier to view in reflective surroundings. Huawei says its anti-reflection rate is 30% higher than that of the MatePad Pro 12.2 PaperMatte Edition 2025, based on Huawei lab data; the product page does not state the year of that comparison. That percentage is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement, and glare reduction remains dependent on lighting and viewing conditions.
Huawei also lists a 93% screen-to-body ratio and 3.55 mm bezels. Its Global page gives the tablet’s thickness as 4.7 mm and weight as 454 g, while cautioning that actual figures can vary by version and measurement method. The review likewise reports about 10.4 × 6.8 inches, 4.7 mm thick, and 454 g. Ukita’s summary is that the device is “stylish, light, and lovely to use, with a PaperMatte display that does a lot of the heavy lifting.”
Software and Google app compatibility
The tablet does not include Google Play Store or Google Mobile Services. For anyone who relies on Google apps, this is not a minor setup detail: compatibility and day-to-day reliability depend on the particular apps, accounts, software versions, and workarounds involved.

In the review author’s experience, GBox did not support split-screen, while apps installed through Aurora did. Those are observations from one reviewer’s testing, not assurances that either route will work consistently for other users or every app. Check the exact apps and workflows you need—such as account sign-in, document editing, file uploads, notifications, and multitasking—before buying, rather than assuming an app-store workaround will reproduce a Google-certified Android experience.
Huawei’s own GoPaint and Notes apps offer more than a token software bundle, according to the review. The author found handwriting-to-text conversion imperfect in their use. Huawei’s Mexico specifications page lists HarmonyOS 4.3 for that regional listing; it should not be read as confirmation of the version or features on every regional unit. Huawei product material reviewed for the tablet does not establish a software-support duration, so buyers should treat update commitment as an unresolved consideration.
Accessories and productivity
Huawei identifies the M-Pencil Pro, Glide Keyboard, and Folio Cover as accessories for the tablet. Availability depends on configuration for the keyboard and folio, and the M-Pencil Pro is sold separately. Confirm what is included with the specific regional bundle rather than assuming the tablet’s listed price covers the accessories shown in product materials.

The review found the Glide Keyboard comfortable enough for typing and liked that it stores the stylus. Its 399 g weight is stated by both Huawei and the review. Ukita’s reservations are practical: the touchpad was too sensitive, the keyboard offered a single viewing angle, and it had no backlight. Those limitations matter if the tablet is meant to replace a laptop for long typing sessions or varied desk and lap use.

The company notes that some stylus features require particular firmware and are available only in certain regions, so check compatibility for the tablet and market you are considering.
Battery life and speakers
Huawei lists a typical battery capacity of 10,400 mAh and claims up to 14.7 hours of local video playback. That playback figure comes from Huawei’s lab test at 25°C, with brightness set to 200 nits, system volume at nine bars, Huawei Video playback, location services enabled, and Bluetooth disabled. Huawei says actual use varies; streaming, brightness, connectivity, and workload can change runtime. The company also lists 40 W wired reverse charging.

Separately, Ukita reports using the tablet through a normal workday of writing, email, Slack, web browsing, and YouTube. That is the reviewer’s personal use, not a controlled battery test or a promise of all-day runtime for every workload. The review describes the four-speaker sound as full for a tablet this thin, though sharper at higher volume; Huawei confirms a four-speaker system.

The review compares its €1,199 starting bundle with the U.S. 11-inch, 256 GB iPad Pro at $1,199. That is a comparison between a reported European Huawei bundle and a U.S. Apple price, not a like-for-like local price comparison; market, configuration, and included accessories differ.

The hardware can make a strong premium-tablet case if the display, light body, and Huawei creative apps fit your priorities. The value is harder to justify if you need built-in Google services or predictable compatibility with specific apps. Before deciding, compare the local price and bundle alongside app support, accessory needs, and any software-support commitment the seller or Huawei can confirm.
Who should consider it?
- A good fit: someone who prioritizes a large, high-resolution OLED screen with a matte-style reflection treatment, portability, and Huawei’s own creative and productivity apps.
- Proceed carefully: someone whose Google-dependent work, classes, or personal routines require reliable access to particular apps or multitasking behaviors. Verify those workflows on the same regional software configuration before committing.
- Budget for the full setup: someone planning to draw or type should check whether the M-Pencil Pro or Glide Keyboard is included, its regional compatibility, and how its limitations affect their use.
For alternatives, compare not just screen size or headline refresh rate but also app compatibility, display surface and glare handling, weight, accessory bundle, keyboard ergonomics, storage, local price, and published software-support commitments.
