HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies have completed an exploratory technical verification of an AI agent discovering and using a digital service, making a micropayment, and settling it in one connected flow. Announced on 9 October 2026, the test used HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service, Ant Digital’s Anvita Flow network, and the Jovay Testnet. It is not a commercial launch or a live service for customers.

What did HSBC and Ant Digital test?

Ant Digital Technologies’ announcement describes a process in which an AI agent could find a digital service, invoke it, and make the associated micropayment, with real-time settlement. In the release’s account, HSBC provided its Tokenised Deposit Service (TDS) and settlement capabilities, including real-time risk checks through its MCP interface. Jovay Testnet provided the Layer 2 blockchain environment, while Anvita Flow enabled agents to discover and invoke services and manage micropayment settlement. These are the companies’ descriptions of the technical verification, not an independent performance assessment. Ant Digital Technologies via PR Newswire, 9 October 2026.

How would an AI agent make a payment?

In the announced flow, the agent handles service discovery and use, then initiates the associated small payment as part of the same automated process. The test linked that agent activity to tokenized deposits and blockchain-based transaction processing, with HSBC’s stated risk-check and settlement capabilities in the flow. The announcement does not specify the detailed authorization steps, how a user would set spending limits, or how the system would handle disputed or failed transactions, so it does not establish a complete consumer payment model.

What are tokenized deposits?

In this announcement, tokenized deposits are represented through HSBC’s TDS, a bank service that connects corporate wallet balances with digital payment and settlement capabilities. HSBC’s earlier Hong Kong TDS announcement, dated 22 May 2025, described real-time, always-on HKD and USD payments between corporate wallets held by a client at HSBC Hong Kong. HSBC named Ant International as its first client. That corporate cash-management context is background on the service; it does not mean the AI-agent test was available to those clients or to the public. HSBC Hong Kong, 22 May 2025.

What does “micropayment” mean here?

Ant Digital’s 2026 release characterizes a micropayment as “often defined as less than $2.00.” That is the company’s description, not a universal industry definition or a stated transaction amount for this test. The announcement does not report the test’s payment values.

Is HSBC launching AI-agent payments?

No customer launch is established. The announcement calls the work a technical verification and does not present it as a commercial launch or live customer proposition. It gives no commercialization date or customer eligibility criteria. HSBC had announced a corporate TDS service in Hong Kong in 2025, but that does not establish access to the AI-agent payment test.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

The verification shows that the participating companies explored connecting an agent’s service discovery and use with a micropayment and settlement in a test environment. It does not establish that the arrangement is ready for production or that it improves payment speed, reliability, or security in practice.

  • The announcement provides no transaction volume, measured latency, or failure rate.
  • It does not provide an independent security assessment or detailed risk-control design.
  • It does not say that customers can use the test, or when a commercial service might be offered.

When comparing future agent-payment demonstrations, useful distinctions include the form of money used, whether service discovery and payment happen in one flow, whether settlement occurs on a testnet or a live-value system, who carries out risk checks, and whether the work is a verification, pilot, or generally available product.
