H&R Block offers three distinct levels of help: prepare your own return online or with desktop software, add Tax Pro Review for a professional check, or have a tax professional prepare the return. The right fit depends on how much work you want to do, which tax forms you need, and the total cost after state and review fees. This review explains those options and the trade-offs, based on H&R Block’s published information—not hands-on testing.
What H&R Block offers
H&R Block is a U.S. tax preparation provider with browser-based filing, downloadable desktop software, professional review of a customer-prepared return, and full-service preparation. You can file online, use desktop software, or work with a tax professional through an office appointment, document drop-off, or virtual appointment. H&R Block’s filing options describe these routes; availability and details can vary by service and location.
| Route | Who prepares the return? | What expert help means | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online DIY | You enter your information and prepare the return in a browser. | Guidance is built into the online filing process; live help and paid options may depend on the tier. | People who want to file themselves and whose forms fit an available online tier. |
| Desktop software | You prepare the return using downloaded software. | It is a self-preparation route, not full-service filing or an included Tax Pro Review. | People who prefer a desktop workflow and want to prepare their own return. |
| DIY plus Tax Pro Review | You complete the online return; a tax professional reviews it. | The professional checks the completed return for errors and missed credits or deductions, then submits it after you approve it. | People who want to do the preparation themselves but add a professional review. |
| Full service | A tax professional prepares the return. | You provide documents and work with a pro, who prepares the filing for your review and approval. | People who want to hand off preparation or prefer one-to-one assistance. |
The routes are not interchangeable: Tax Pro Review checks a return you prepared, while full service means a professional handles the preparation. Starting online and later asking a professional to take over may involve a different service and price; confirm the available transition and quote with H&R Block before relying on it.

Online DIY for eligible, straightforward returns
H&R Block describes Free Online as limited to specified simple situations. Its examples include W-2 income; up to $1,500 in interest and dividend income reported on Forms 1099-INT and 1099-DIV; and eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, among other limited cases. The company says approximately 52% of filers qualify; that is H&R Block’s estimate, not an independently established figure. Review the current list of included forms and situations before entering your return. H&R Block’s online filing options provide its eligibility details.

Paid online tiers for more involved returns
If you have itemized deductions, 1099 income, rental property, or other forms outside the free tier, check which paid tier supports that situation. H&R Block describes Deluxe + State as including itemized deductions, Premium as covering situations such as 1099s and rental property, and Premium & Business as combining personal and business returns. Eligibility and product details are subject to change, so match your specific forms to the current plan description rather than choosing by name alone. H&R Block’s tax software page lists its software tiers.
Tax Pro Review when you want a second set of eyes
Tax Pro Review is a virtual review added to an online DIY return. You prepare the return and provide the requested tax documents; a tax professional checks it, and H&R Block says it submits the return after you approve it. The company says the review typically can take up to three days after you finish the return and submit documents. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed turnaround; complexity and peak filing periods can affect timing. Review the service details and current tier-specific price on H&R Block’s Tax Pro Review page.

Full service when you want a professional to prepare it
With in-person preparation, H&R Block says you gather your documents, meet with a tax professional, review the return as it is prepared, and approve it when it is ready. The company also offers virtual appointments and document drop-off. These choices change how you interact with the preparer, not the basic distinction: in full service, the pro prepares the return instead of merely reviewing a DIY filing. H&R Block’s office information describes these options.

What H&R Block costs, and what the advertised price leaves out
H&R Block’s software page displayed the following prices when accessed on October 7, 2026. They are listed software prices, not a promise of your final checkout total; H&R Block says prices may change without notice. Confirm current prices and applicable charges before buying or filing. The software pricing page contains the current plan and fee details.

| Desktop software tier | Displayed price on October 7, 2026 | H&R Block’s description |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $50 | For simple returns. |
| Deluxe + State | $70 | Includes one state return and supports itemized deductions. |
| Premium | $95 | For more complex situations, including 1099s and rental property. |
| Premium & Business | $115 | Combines personal and business returns. |
State software and state e-filing are separate cost considerations. H&R Block listed state programs at $39.95 per state for Basic and Deluxe; its Deluxe + State, Premium, and Premium & Business tiers include one state program. The page separately lists a $19.95 state e-file fee, with a New York exception and state-specific limitations. These fees do not apply identically to every plan and return, so check the selected edition and state at checkout rather than adding or assuming charges blindly.
For online filing, H&R Block’s 2026 Tax Pro Review examples listed add-on prices of $75 with Free Online, $65 with Deluxe, and $95 with Premium or Self-Employed. Those amounts are tier-specific, and state charges are shown separately. H&R Block’s in-person preparation was listed as starting at $99 plus an additional state fee; the actual quote varies with the return and state. The company’s separate upfront-pricing page, dated June 2025, listed state charges starting at $75 each, illustrating why a starting figure should not be treated as a universal fee. Get a quote for your specific return and verify what it includes.

Desktop software versus online filing
H&R Block’s desktop software is a download rather than a CD: the company says it no longer offers the CD version. Desktop and online filing are both self-preparation routes, but they are different products and workflows. A software purchase does not, by itself, include full-service preparation or Tax Pro Review. If you prefer desktop software, confirm that the edition supports your forms and state needs, and check the current download, included state program, and e-file charges. H&R Block’s software page describes the desktop editions, and its CD alternatives page explains the move to downloads.

How to choose without being surprised by fees
- List your tax forms and income sources. Note W-2s, interest or dividends, 1099 income, rental income, business income, and whether you expect to itemize deductions.
- Check the plan’s included situations. Compare your forms with H&R Block’s current online or software tier descriptions, especially before assuming Free Online will cover the return.
- Decide how much preparation you want to do. Choose DIY if you want to complete the return, Tax Pro Review if you want a professional to check your DIY work, or full service if you want a professional to prepare it.
- Calculate the full price for your route. Check the federal product, state program, state e-file fee, and any review or preparation charge separately. Verify the checkout total for your state and edition.
- Confirm the service and timing. For a review or appointment, check what documents are needed, how the professional will work with you, and any stated timing or appointment details.
What the guarantees do—and do not—promise
H&R Block advertises a 100% Accuracy Guarantee and a Maximum Refund Guarantee. The company describes the accuracy promise as reimbursement of penalties and interest resulting from an error due to H&R Block or its software. For a qualifying H&R Block error that leads to a larger refund or smaller tax liability, it says it will refund the preparation fee and file an amended return at no additional charge. Its Maximum Refund Guarantee is framed as finding a bigger refund using the same information. These are company-stated promises with terms and conditions; they do not guarantee a particular refund, tax outcome, or eligibility. Read the current terms on H&R Block’s filing-options page and office page.

Who should consider H&R Block?
- Consider it if you want a choice between online or desktop DIY filing, a paid professional review, and full-service preparation under one provider.
- It may be a fit if you want to start with self-preparation but value the option of adding a review when the return is complete.
- Check carefully if your return includes less common forms, multiple states, business or rental activity, or needs beyond the free tier; confirm product support and the complete price first.
- Look elsewhere if your priority is a guaranteed low total price before your tax situation and state requirements are known, or you need a service feature not established in H&R Block’s published plan descriptions.
This is a service-and-pricing review based on H&R Block’s published descriptions, not an independent accuracy test or hands-on assessment of software usability or support.
