HPE announced a dedicated factory for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI systems in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic, on May 18, 2022. The planned site was to manufacture HPE Apollo systems and HPE Cray EX supercomputers. HPE said operations were planned for summer 2022, but that announcement alone does not confirm when the factory opened or whether it is operating today.
Where is HPE’s supercomputer factory?
The facility is in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic. HPE described it as a European manufacturing expansion, adjacent to an existing HPE site that makes industry-standard servers and storage. The company said the new factory would manufacture and ship its HPC and AI systems, with Foxconn supporting manufacturing and shipping. These details come from HPE’s May 18, 2022 announcement.
HPE called Kutná Hora its fourth global HPC manufacturing site and said the expansion was intended to speed delivery to European customers and strengthen the region’s supplier ecosystem. These are HPE’s stated aims, not independently measured outcomes.

HPE named Apollo systems for demanding HPC and AI applications, including AI modeling and training.

HPE Cray EX supercomputers
The other named product family was HPE Cray EX, intended for high-end supercomputing. HPE said an EX cabinet can weigh up to 8,000 pounds (3,628 kilograms); that figure is a facility-design detail in the company’s announcement, not an independently audited specification.
HPE said the facility was designed to handle liquid-cooled systems, with a reinforced floor and a water circuit intended to help cool hot water. Those features reflect the needs of large enterprise systems, rather than a consumer computer production line.

Did the factory open in summer 2022?
HPE’s announcement said operations were planned to begin in summer 2022. A planned start date is not confirmation of the actual opening date. The cited announcement does not establish the factory’s present operating status, so it is more accurate to describe summer 2022 as HPE’s plan than as a verified opening date.

Is the Czech AI Factory the same as HPE’s factory?
No. The names refer to separate projects with different purposes. The HPE site is a manufacturing facility; the Czech AI Factory is a national AI services initiative launched in May 2026 as part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s AI Factory network.

CZAI coordinator Vít Vondrák, Director of IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center, said the project aims “not only to provide computing power, but to build an open ecosystem connecting supercomputers, data, expert support and application know-how into practical services for industry, public administration and research.” That describes CZAI’s service role, not HPE’s manufacturing site.

HPE’s announcement describes HPE’s own HPC and AI manufacturing expansion and names Foxconn as its manufacturing service partner. It does not identify OpenAI as a partner or say the factory was built for OpenAI. The announcement therefore does not support describing it as an OpenAI factory.
