The HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 was a capable entry-level tower server, but HPE now lists the product reference as retired and its base products as obsolete and unavailable for sale. It is therefore a used-server purchase, not a current new-server recommendation. Its expansion options and embedded iLO management can still be useful, provided you verify the exact chassis, installed components, licensing and condition before buying.

What the ML30 Gen9 offers

The ML30 Gen9 is a single-socket tower server family. HPE QuickSpecs describes configurations with four DIMM slots, PCIe 3.0 expansion and processor options up to four cores. These are family-level capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular used unit has those components installed. Check the HPE product documentation and the seller’s exact configuration before treating any upgrade as compatible.

For a small office or lab that needs a tower chassis, local storage and remote administration, the platform can remain practical if the used price and condition make sense. It is not a good choice when you need a current-generation system, assured ongoing support, or a purchase backed by known current inventory and warranty terms.

How many drives does an ML30 Gen9 support?

There is no single bay count for every ML30 Gen9. HPE documentation covers four-bay LFF (3.5-inch) hot-plug, eight-bay SFF (2.5-inch) hot-plug, and four-bay LFF non-hot-plug configurations. HPE’s QuickSpecs likewise describes alternatives across the family. The bay arrangement depends on the chassis and installed cage or backplane.

Before buying drives, identify the specific unit rather than relying on the model name alone:

  • Ask for clear photos of the front bays and the internal drive cage or backplane.
  • Confirm whether the system is LFF or SFF, and whether the bays are hot-plug or non-hot-plug.
  • Check which drive carriers, cables and storage controller are included.
  • Verify that the intended drive interface and form factor match the installed cage and controller.

A 3.5-inch SATA hard drive may be relevant for a verified LFF configuration, but the model name alone does not establish that a generic drive, carrier or controller will fit or work. IT Pro’s historical review notes SATA data drives in its tested system; that does not confirm compatibility with every ML30 Gen9 variant.

How much power does it use?

IT Pro reported 35 W at idle and 92 W with the CPU under load for its tested ML30 Gen9, which had one 460 W power supply and two 1 TB SATA data drives. These are measurements from that specific test configuration, not guaranteed consumption figures for other processors, drive sets, controllers or power supplies. The publication year is not established on the accessible review page. See the IT Pro review for the original context.

Do not confuse the power supply’s rated capacity with the server’s ordinary wall draw. HPE’s guide describes 350 W non-hot-plug supplies and an optional 460 W hot-plug supply configuration associated with a redundant-power-supply assembly. Those ratings describe supply capacity, not continuous consumption. Check the installed supply and the complete system configuration when estimating electricity use.

Remote management and iLO licensing

The server has an embedded iLO management processor for remote monitoring and control. HPE’s user guide notes that some iLO productivity features require a license. Do not assume that a used server includes a transferable license or access to every advanced management function: confirm the license state and the specific remote functions you need with the seller.

Family specifications can show what HPE offered, but they do not certify an individual machine or guarantee support for a third-party part. HPE marks the product retired and its base products obsolete and unavailable for sale; verify any support entitlement or firmware availability for the specific serial number with HPE rather than assuming it remains current. The sources available here do not establish current used prices, stock or seller warranties, so compare actual offers on configuration and terms rather than treating a quoted price as representative.

Is the HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 worth buying?

It can be worth considering as a used tower server when the exact configuration meets your needs, the seller can demonstrate its condition, and the price reflects its retired status. Its storage alternatives, PCIe expansion and embedded iLO are useful strengths, but none removes the need to check what is actually installed or whether the management access you want is licensed.

Dave Mitchell, reviewing the system for IT Pro, called it “a great choice for SMBs with an eye on the future.” That was the reviewer’s assessment at the time, not a statement about present-day support or availability. For a current purchase decision, weigh the individual unit’s parts, warranty and support against other available systems; the sources cited here do not provide a current-market comparison.
