The HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 is a single-socket, 4.5U tower server platform—not one fixed configuration. Its usefulness depends on the exact processor, drive cage, storage controller, memory, and power supply fitted to the unit. HPE’s specifications describe a capable enterprise-oriented chassis, but they do not establish today’s used-market value or comparative performance.

What the ML110 Gen10 is—and what this review can establish

HPE identifies the ML110 Gen10 as a tower server with a 4.5U form factor. It measures 17.32 × 7.68 × 18.92 inches (44 × 19.5 × 48.05 cm), and HPE lists an approximate weight range of 29.82–55.0 lb (13.5–25.0 kg), depending on configuration. These are platform specifications, not the dimensions and weight of every completed build. HPE QuickSpecs

HPE’s documented preconfigured examples span Xeon Bronze, Silver, and Gold processors, with differences in drive bays, storage controllers, and power supplies. So a review of the model name alone cannot establish what a particular listing includes. This is a specification-led assessment rather than a hands-on test: no independent benchmark results, acoustic readings, power measurements, or current price comparisons are established here.

IT Creations published a video review on 2019-10-21, describing the server as a mid-tier system with enterprise features and noting that pricing information ages quickly. That is useful historical context, not evidence of current value or performance. IT Creations’ 2019 review

How to assess a specific ML110 Gen10 listing

Ask the seller for the product number or a clear inventory of installed parts. The following items determine whether the server fits your workload and whether advertised upgrades will work:

  • Processor: identify the exact Xeon model and generation. Do not assume a processor upgrade is supported just because it fits the socket; HPE does not support field upgrades from first- to second-generation processors. Check the QuickSpecs for the exact system and upgrade path.
  • Drive cage and backplane: confirm whether it has LFF or SFF bays, whether they are hot-plug, and whether the backplane is installed.
  • Storage controller: identify the controller model and its cabling and drive support. The controller and installed cage—not just the ML110 name—govern storage compatibility.
  • Memory: note each DIMM’s type, capacity, speed, and population. Check compatibility against the installed CPU and existing memory before ordering more.
  • Expansion cards: map each intended card to a usable slot and its electrical lane width, not only its physical connector size.
  • Power and service coverage: verify the installed supply configuration and whether any warranty remains for that serial number, seller, and geography.

Processor and memory limits

The ML110 Gen10 is single-socket. HPE’s example configurations include Xeon Bronze, Silver, and Gold CPUs; the processor in a specific machine determines its supported memory speed and system performance. The available material does not provide comparable benchmarks, so a workload-specific performance ranking would be unsupported.

HPE lists six DIMM slots for the single processor and a maximum documented capacity of 192 GB using six 32 GB RDIMMs. The specified memory is DDR4 Registered DIMM (RDIMM). HPE states that LRDIMMs are not qualified and that RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed. Memory speed depends on memory type, population, and processor model, so a module’s rated speed is not a guarantee that it will run at that speed in this server. HPE QuickSpecs

  • HPE ProLiant ML30 G10 Plus Tower Server, perfect for small businesses and remote offices
  • Xeon E-2314 4-Core 2.8GHz 8MB CPU, Turbo up to 4.5GHz
  • Memory: 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz Unbuffered Memory
  • Hard Drive: 4TB (4 x 1TB) SATA III 6Gb/s SSD for Ultra Fast Storage
  • Hard drives installation required

HPE’s listed examples include 8 GB P00918-B21 and 16 GB P00920-B21 2933 MT/s kits for second-generation Xeon Scalable processors, and a 32 GB 815100-B21 DDR4-2666 kit for first-generation processors. These examples do not mean every kit is appropriate for every ML110 Gen10. Confirm CPU generation, module type, installed DIMMs, and the required population order; a processor may run memory below its native rating. HPE QuickSpecs HPE memory reference

Drive bays: LFF and SFF are not interchangeable

HPE documents multiple chassis arrangements. The installed cage and controller decide which drives can be fitted and whether they can be replaced while the server is running.

Documented arrangement Bay and interface details What to verify
LFF non-hot-plug Four LFF SATA bays Do not assume a drive is hot-swappable; verify cage, connectors, and controller.
LFF hot-plug Four LFF SAS/SATA bays Confirm the hot-plug backplane and compatible storage controller are installed.
SFF hot-plug Eight SFF SATA/SSD bays Confirm the SFF cage and backplane; an LFF drive will not fit an SFF-only arrangement.

Optional expansion arrangements are also shown in HPE’s QuickSpecs, but a model-family listing does not prove that an individual unit has them. Before buying drives, ask for a photograph of the front bays and the controller model, and confirm the backplane and cabling. HPE QuickSpecs

PCIe expansion and slot trade-offs

HPE lists five PCIe 3.0 slots, but their capacities are not identical. Slots 2 and 5 are specifically the least recommended for throughput because their electrical speed is lower than the physical slot size suggests.

Slot Physical/electrical configuration Published card-length detail
1 x16 Up to three-quarter length (up to 9.5 in)
2 x8 physical, x4 electrical Not stated
3 x8 Not stated
4 x16 Not stated
5 x8 physical, x4 electrical Not stated

For a network, storage, or accelerator card, check both its bandwidth needs and its physical dimensions against the available slot. A card that fits an x8 connector may still be limited to x4 bandwidth in slot 2 or 5. HPE QuickSpecs

Why the exact SKU matters

HPE’s listed performance configurations illustrate how much the package can vary. One example pairs a Xeon Silver 4208 with 16 GB RDIMM, embedded two-port 1GbE, software RAID, four LFF hot-plug bays, no hard drive shipped as standard, and a listed 550 W or 800 W supply configuration. Another listed model uses a Xeon 4210R, a P408i-p controller, and eight SFF bays. These are examples, not a guarantee about a used server advertised simply as an ML110 Gen10. HPE QuickSpecs

  • 1 Processor Support - 192 GB RAM Support - 16 MB Graphic Card - DVD-Writer - Gigabit Ethernet - 4 x LFF Bay(s) - No - 1 x 350 W
  • Country Of Origin: China
  • Model Number: P10806-001
  • Item package Dimension: 24.0" L x 23.0" W x 13.0" H

When comparing two listings, record the differences rather than treating them as equivalent because they share a chassis name:

  • CPU model and generation
  • Number and type of installed RDIMMs
  • LFF or SFF cage, bay count, and hot-plug status
  • Storage controller and RAID arrangement
  • Power-supply configuration
  • Included drives, rails, and other accessories
  • Condition, shipping, taxes, and any confirmed warranty coverage

HPE specifies a three-year parts, labor, and next-business-day onsite support warranty for the documented preconfigured models. That does not establish remaining coverage on a second-hand unit. Confirm eligibility by serial number with HPE or the seller, including geographic terms. HPE QuickSpecs

Is the ML110 Gen10 a good home-lab server?

It can suit a home lab that needs an enterprise-style tower with internal drive options and PCIe expansion, provided the chosen configuration matches the intended workload. The chassis occupies substantial space compared with a small desktop, and the available evidence does not establish its noise, idle power, or operating cost. Those factors matter in a home setting and should be checked for the actual unit rather than inferred from the model name.

For virtualization or storage experiments, first total the memory already installed, confirm how much can be added within the 192 GB documented RDIMM maximum, and check the drive bays and controller. For a network or storage card, reserve an appropriate slot and account for slot 2 and 5’s x4 electrical limit. For a quiet or low-power environment, seek configuration-specific acoustic and power information; no measurements are established here.

Verdict

The ML110 Gen10 is best judged as a configurable enterprise tower platform, not as a single recipe for performance or value. HPE documents useful expansion, up to 192 GB RDIMM, and several drive-cage options, but the buying decision turns on the exact SKU and installed parts. Because the independent review evidence is from 2019 and no contemporary pricing or benchmarks are established, compare the actual specification and total landed cost of the unit in front of you rather than relying on the model name or a dated review.
