HPE’s official documentation identifies the DL380 Gen9 system ROM family as P89, but it does not confirm that a P89 update file is the image required for “SW2-2 System ROM Recovery,” or specify whether that recovery image is a .bin or .rom file. Don’t use a routine BIOS update package for switch-based recovery until you have verified the procedure and file for your exact server and system board.

Which BIOS file does the DL380 Gen9 use?

HPE identifies the DL380 Gen9 and DL360 Gen9 System ROM family as P89. That identifies the firmware family; it does not establish that a standard P89 update package is the correct recovery image for the operation described as SW2-2 System ROM Recovery. HPE’s cited pages do not confirm a recovery filename or extension for that procedure.

Before selecting firmware, verify the exact server model and its current ROM identity. HPE’s P89 System ROM Flash Binary page describes a binary for updating the ROM from the UEFI Shell or System Utilities pre-boot environment. That is a documented update path, not proof that the binary is the SW2-2 recovery file.

What the documented P89 files are for

HPE lists two distinct standard update paths. Neither cited description identifies its package as an SW2-2 recovery image.

What HPE documents about the backup ROM and switches

Switching to the backup ROM in System Utilities

HPE’s UEFI System Utilities guide documents this menu path: System Utilities > System Configuration > BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) > Advanced Options > ROM Selection. It offers “Use Current ROM” and “Switch to Backup ROM.” HPE says the backup option reverts to the image in use before the last flash event. This is a documented ROM-selection function; it does not specify the SW2-2 recovery procedure.

Maintenance-switch functions in the server guide

The DL380 Gen9 server guide describes S6 as preparing to erase system configuration from CMOS when set to On. It also says S1, S5, and S6 On access the redundant ROM. The cited guide does not identify this operation as SW2-2 System ROM Recovery or provide a compatible recovery filename. Because the S6 function can erase configuration information, do not treat switch changes as a routine BIOS update step.

Firmware release details and update precautions

HPE’s cited P89 release listing identifies version 3.40_08-29-2024 as recommended and gives a release date of September 12, 2024. HPE says a reboot is required after installation. Its release notes list an Intel IPU 2024.3 BIOS update, mitigations for CVE-2023-45229, CVE-2022-36763, and CVE-2022-36764, and a fix for an incorrect SMBIOS Type 3 asset-tag report. HPE lists no firmware dependencies and no known issues for that release.

Those details apply to the cited release, not necessarily to a later listing or to switch-based recovery. Check HPE’s current P89 support information for the exact server before an ordinary firmware update; do not infer that the recommended update is the recovery image.

How to proceed if you need SW2-2 recovery

  1. Confirm the hardware identity. Check that the system is a DL380 Gen9 and identify its ROM family and board configuration. Do not choose firmware based only on a generic “ProLiant Gen9” label.
  2. Separate recovery from updating. HPE’s P89 binary and Windows component pages describe routine ROM update routes. They do not confirm the file or procedure for SW2-2 recovery.
  3. Verify the exact switch and recovery instructions. Use documentation specific to the server’s board and configuration, or obtain confirmation from HPE support, before changing switches or loading an image. The cited material does not resolve what “SW2-2” means in this recovery context.
  4. For a normal firmware update only, choose the documented environment. Use the P89 binary for the UEFI Shell or pre-boot System Utilities route, or the Windows x64 component for a supported operating system. Follow the current HPE instructions and allow for the required reboot.
