The HPE Apollo 4510 Gen10 is a 4U storage server built around a ProLiant XL450 Gen10 node and a chassis that can accommodate up to 60 large-form-factor drives. Its strongest documented case is storage density for object storage, archive, and data analytics; whether a specific used or new system is a good buy depends on its node, drives, controller, support status, and the capacity and performance your workload actually needs.
This is a configuration-aware review of HPE’s published design and options, not a hands-on performance test. HPE specifications establish maximum configurations, not the usable capacity or speed of every unit.
What the HPE Apollo 4510 Gen10 is
HPE describes the Apollo 4510 Gen10 as a 4U storage-dense platform for object storage, archive, and data analytics. The system combines one HPE ProLiant XL450 Gen10 server node with a storage chassis supporting up to 60 LFF (large form factor) drives. HPE also lists two SFF (small form factor) bays and two M.2 slots in the node. These are platform features, not evidence that any particular software stack or workload will perform well. See HPE’s Apollo systems product information and Apollo 4510 Gen10 QuickSpecs.
The product page says the system supports dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors and configurable power, storage-controller, and networking options. Those choices matter: two systems with the same chassis name may have materially different compute, drive connectivity, and network capabilities. Confirm the installed node and options rather than assuming a listing represents a fully configured system.

Capacity depends on the actual drive configuration
HPE’s QuickSpecs list a maximum raw capacity of 840 TB with 60 × 14 TB LFF SAS or SATA hard drives. HPE says hard drives do not ship standard. The QuickSpecs also describe LFF SAS SSD and SATA SSD alternatives. The 840 TB figure is therefore a published maximum raw-drive configuration, not a promise that a particular unit includes drives or delivers 840 TB of formatted, protected storage.
When evaluating a system, establish the media type, drive count and size, storage controller, and protection layout. Formatting, RAID or other redundancy, spare-drive policy, and filesystem or object-store overhead reduce capacity available to applications; the exact usable amount depends on the chosen configuration and software. Do not compare a bare-chassis raw maximum with another system’s usable capacity.

Physical fit, power, and handling
HPE says the Apollo 4510 fits its standard 1075 mm racks. HPE support documentation gives chassis dimensions of 17.58 × 44.80 × 90.43 cm (6.92 × 17.64 × 35.60 in), approximate empty weight of 59 kg (131 lb), and approximate fully loaded weight of 103 kg (227 lb). Loaded weight varies with configuration. Check rack depth, rail compatibility, airflow, and site handling capacity before installation. The dimensions and weights are listed in HPE’s Product Information Reference.

QuickSpecs list 800 W and 1600 W Flex Slot power-supply options. Those are PSU ratings, not measurements of system draw. No measured idle or workload power figure is established here, so estimate operating cost only from measurements of the exact unit under representative load. Drive count, processor configuration, workload, and cooling conditions can all affect actual consumption.

How to judge the system for your workload
Object storage and archive
The 60 LFF bays are the clearest advantage when a deployment needs many large drives in one 4U chassis. For an archive or object-storage build, compare usable capacity after protection overhead, expected drive replacement needs, and the cost of populating the bays—not just the chassis’ advertised maximum.
Analytics and performance-sensitive uses
HPE names data analytics as a target area, but the published platform description does not establish throughput, latency, or results for a particular analytics stack. Performance depends on the installed processors and memory as well as media, controller, network, software, and data path. Require testing with the intended workload before treating the platform as a performance fit; no independent benchmark or hands-on test result is available for this review.

Power, service, and total cost
Account for more than the chassis price: the XL450 node, drives, controller, networking, rails, replacement parts, power and cooling, and support can change the economics substantially. HPE’s service guide documents maintenance procedures, but it does not establish current parts availability or warranty coverage for a particular secondhand unit. Confirm those details with the seller or HPE for the system’s region and exact SKU.
What HPE’s density claim means
HPE’s product page describes the system as offering “revolutionary storage density in a 4U form factor that fits in Hewlett Packard Enterprise standard 1075 mm racks.” That is manufacturer language, not an independently measured comparison. The concrete basis for evaluating the claim is the documented 4U chassis and support for up to 60 LFF drives; whether that density is useful in practice depends on rack space, usable capacity, power, cooling, and operating requirements.

What to verify before buying a used Apollo 4510
A low asking price alone cannot establish value. A public discussion titled “HPE Apollo 4510 gen10. Did I waste $100” illustrates the kind of configuration questions buyers raise, but that individual example does not establish a typical market price. Request an itemized configuration and verify:
- That the unit is a Gen10 and includes the expected chassis and ProLiant XL450 Gen10 node.
- Processor and memory configuration, and whether the node boots and reports its installed hardware.
- Drive count, capacity, interface, health, and whether drives are actually included; HPE specifies that hard drives do not ship standard.
- Storage controller and cabling, supported drive types, networking, power supplies, and rails.
- Physical condition, loaded weight and shipping arrangements, plus warranty, support, and parts availability for the unit and region.
- Whether the seller’s quoted capacity is raw or usable, and what redundancy or software overhead is assumed.
Do not transfer specifications from older Apollo 4510 generations to the Gen10: earlier generations can have different drive counts and capacity limits. Match the exact model, SKU, node, and options to the relevant documentation.
