The HP Z240 SFF is an older, compact workstation with a useful memory and storage upgrade path, but its small-form-factor power and clearance limits make graphics upgrades configuration-dependent. It can suit basic productivity, light workstation tasks, or a small home lab when its installed hardware and software fit the job. Whether it is a sensible purchase depends on the exact CPU, power supply, memory, storage, graphics, condition, and operating-system eligibility—not just the Z240 name.

What the HP Z240 SFF is—and what this review can establish

HP’s Z240 Small Form Factor is a compact workstation platform built around Intel’s C236 chipset. HP documents support for Intel Xeon E3 v5 processors, sixth-generation Intel Core processors up to 95 W, and Intel Pentium processors. The precise CPU options depend on system configuration and BIOS; a model name alone does not identify the processor inside a used unit. HP’s Z240 Workstation Maintenance and Service Guide is the main reference for its supported hardware.

This is a specification-based retrospective, not a hands-on benchmark review. No controlled performance, noise, thermal, reliability, or current used-price measurements are available here, so there is no defensible speed score or universal value verdict. Expect used systems to vary in CPU, RAM, drives, PSU, graphics, condition, and included accessories.

Is the Z240 SFF still worth buying?

It may be worth considering when a particular machine is inexpensive for its condition and configuration, and its workload does not require modern high-performance graphics, a guaranteed Windows 11 upgrade, or a long future support horizon. Its compact chassis, four memory slots, documented 64 GB memory ceiling, and native M.2 PCIe x4 connector are practical advantages. The limited SFF power options and uncertain Windows 11 eligibility are important counterweights.

For office and general productivity, light workstation work, or a small home-lab role, judge the installed processor, RAM, storage, applications, and operating-system support together. Those are plausible roles, not tested performance claims. Compare a specific listing with newer alternatives on workload performance, expansion, supported OS, condition, warranty, and total upgrade cost; available evidence does not establish a current market price or benchmark ranking.

What to check before buying a used Z240 SFF

  1. Identify the exact machine. Record the installed processor, product number or serial-linked configuration, PSU rating, memory modules, storage devices, graphics card, and included accessories. HP’s Z240 SFF support page provides official documentation and directs owners to HP’s parts lookup. HP advises: “For complete and current information on supported accessories and components for the computer, go to http://partsurfer.hp.com.”
  2. Check condition and completeness. Confirm that the unit boots, inspect its ports and drives, and verify any advertised accessories. A broad model label does not establish which optional parts or drive brackets are present.
  3. Price the upgrades you actually need. Confirm memory type and configuration, the exact SSD fit, and any graphics-card clearance and power requirements before treating an upgrade as part of the deal.
  4. Verify the operating system plan. Check the installed CPU against Microsoft’s supported Windows 11 processor list and run PC Health Check for device eligibility. Do not infer Windows 11 support from the Z240 chassis name.

Processor and memory support

Processor families

HP lists Xeon E3 v5, sixth-generation Core up to 95 W, and Pentium processor families for the Z240 platform. A used buyer should verify the exact installed CPU and its configuration rather than assume that any processor from a family is a drop-in replacement. Do not apply Tower model specifications to the SFF.

  • Intel Core i7 Processor for Powerful Performance
  • 32GB DDR4 Memory for Smooth Multitasking
  • 1TB NVMe SSD for Rapid File Access
  • 2TB HDD for Extra Storage Space

Memory capacity and type

HP specifies four DIMM slots and up to 64 GB using 16 GB modules. The documented memory is DDR4-2133, unbuffered DIMM, with ECC or non-ECC options. Choose modules for the installed processor and configuration; the guide does not establish that ECC and non-ECC memory can be mixed freely or that every retail module will work.

Memory is a relatively straightforward upgrade category to investigate, but check the existing modules and system configuration before ordering. HP’s service guide is the reference for supported memory specifications.

Graphics cards, expansion, and power limits

The SFF system board has two mechanically x16 expansion slots and PCIe Gen 3 support. HP documents 200 W and 240 W SFF power-supply options. It also states that multiple graphics cards are supported when their combined power consumption is less than 45 W. That specific condition is not a universal maximum for a single card, nor does it certify a higher-power card as compatible.

Do not assume that a PCIe x16 card will fit, receive enough power, or cool adequately in this chassis. Before buying any discrete card, verify all of the following against the exact machine and card:

  • Card power draw and cooling needs within the SFF enclosure.
  • Required display outputs and compatibility with the intended monitors.

A low-profile, low-power card may be a search category, not a blanket recommendation. Integrated Intel graphics may support up to three displays depending on processor. HP says that for more than three displays, users should configure integrated and discrete graphics in F10 setup, while recommending discrete-only graphics for four or more displays. Actual display support depends on the installed graphics and available outputs.

Storage and connectivity

HP lists a native M.2 connector with a PCIe x4 interface, SATA RAID 0/1, USB 3.0 ports, and three DisplayPort 1.2 connectors in its SFF specification section. These features provide options for SSD storage and peripherals, but the presence of the connector does not certify every current M.2 or NVMe retail drive. Check the specific drive’s physical fit and compatibility; also inspect the used system for installed drive brackets, bays, and populated ports, which can vary by configuration.

Size, access, and service documentation

HP lists the SFF’s standard weight as 6.7 kg (14.86 lb). In tower orientation, the chassis measures 33.8 cm high, 10.0 cm wide, and 38.1 cm deep; in desktop orientation it measures 10.0 cm high, 33.8 cm wide, and 38.1 cm deep. The hardware overview shows the access panel, power supply, system board, airflow guide, drive positions, and optional media reader.

For setup and repair details, use HP’s support page and the linked Maintenance and Service Guide. Identify the exact product number or serial-linked configuration when looking up parts, rather than relying on the family name.

Can the HP Z240 run Windows 11?

Not necessarily. Windows 11 eligibility depends on the exact processor and the rest of the device configuration. Check the processor against Microsoft’s current supported Intel processor list, then use PC Health Check and Microsoft’s system-requirements guidance to assess the specific machine. Microsoft maintains the processor list, so check it at the time of purchase.

Windows 10 support is also a present-day consideration: Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2 as the final Windows 10 version, with servicing ending on 2025-10-14. HP’s Windows 10 22H2 test matrix includes the Z240 SFF, but HP’s historical testing does not extend Windows 10’s servicing lifecycle or establish that every Z240 CPU qualifies for Windows 11.

Who should consider it—and who should look elsewhere?

It may fit if

  • You need a compact used desktop and the specific unit’s CPU and RAM meet your applications’ requirements.
  • You value a documented path to up to 64 GB of DDR4-2133 memory or want to investigate the native M.2 PCIe x4 connector.
  • Your graphics needs are modest, or you have verified a particular card’s physical and electrical fit.
  • You have confirmed a supported operating-system plan for the installed processor.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your work depends on a high-power GPU, substantial GPU cooling, or expansion that the SFF chassis and PSU cannot accommodate.
  • You need guaranteed Windows 11 eligibility but cannot verify the installed CPU and device configuration.
  • You need a measured performance, noise, thermal, or reliability result before buying; those qualities are not established by HP’s specification guide.
