The original HP Z1 is a 27-inch all-in-one workstation built around a 2560 × 1440 IPS display, workstation-class component options, and unusually accessible internals. Its appeal is the combination of a large integrated screen and a chassis designed to open for servicing; its trade-offs include substantial weight, hard-to-reach rear ports, and the uncertainty of buying an aging, configuration-dependent system. This review covers the early-2010s original Z1, not the later Z1 G2 or HP’s Z1 tower workstations.

What the original HP Z1 is—and what this review covers

HP’s original Z1 puts the computer and a 27-inch display in one enclosure. HP’s archival Z1 Workstation datasheet specifies a 2560 × 1440 LED-backlit IPS panel and describes multiple processor, graphics, and storage configurations. The Z1 name alone therefore does not identify the hardware inside a particular machine.

This is a historical product review, not a current buying guide based on live listings or modern software tests. Tom’s Hardware reported that HP had replaced the first-generation Z1 with the Z1 G2 at the time of its review; that statement says nothing about present-day used or refurbished stock. No current price, seller, warranty, or software-compatibility status is established here.

Specifications depend on the exact configuration

HP’s datasheet lists a range of choices, rather than one standard build. It also cautions: “All specifications represent the typical specifications provided by HP’s component manufacturers; actual performance may vary either higher or lower.”

Component What HP’s archival datasheet says What to verify on a specific unit
Display 27-inch, 2560 × 1440, LED-backlit IPS Panel condition, including whether the screen has damage or defects
Processor Available Core i3 and Xeon choices Installed CPU; the Z1 name does not mean the unit has a Xeon
Graphics Multiple graphics options, including NVIDIA Quadro models Installed GPU and its condition; not every machine has a Quadro
Memory Four slots and up to 32 GB of DDR3 ECC memory Installed capacity and memory type, plus compatibility for any planned upgrade
Storage SATA hard-drive and SSD options Which drive or drives are installed and their condition
Connections A mix of USB, FireWire, network, audio, and DisplayPort connections Which ports the exact configuration has and whether they work

These are historical product specifications, not a claim that every listed option was available in every configuration or remains readily obtainable. For a particular system, use its product number and serial number to identify the machine. HP’s Z1 setup and user guides support page provides product-specific documentation lookup.

Design and serviceability: the Z1’s defining strength

Unlike many all-in-ones that make internal access difficult, the original Z1 was designed to open for service. iFixit’s 2012 teardown describes a display that folds flat, latches that release the enclosure, and tabs that let several components be removed without tools. Its illustrated drive bracket can hold one 3.5-inch drive or two 2.5-inch drives. That describes the teardown configuration; it should not be treated as proof that every used Z1 has the same parts or arrangement. iFixit also directs repair work to the service manual rather than presenting the teardown as a repair guide.

Gavin Gear’s 2012 Windows Experience Blog account likewise described opening the machine without tools in many cases. Easy access can make inspection and some servicing less intimidating, but it does not make legacy replacement parts interchangeable. Confirm the exact system and consult its service documentation before buying components.

Screen, stand, and everyday placement

Tom’s Hardware described the first-generation Z1’s display as a DreamColor 2560 × 1440 IPS screen and discussed its color-depth behavior. Those are observations from that historical review, not a current measurement of every panel or a guarantee about the condition of a used screen. Inspect the particular display and decide whether its resolution and characteristics suit your work.

Tom’s Hardware’s tested system weighed 47 pounds and had a stand with height and tilt adjustment. The reviewer also noted that the rear connectors can be awkward to reach when the computer is in its normal position. The integrated design reduces the need to set up a separate computer and monitor, but the weight makes the Z1 less convenient to move than its all-in-one form might suggest. Tom’s Hardware also noted that VESA mounting was possible with an adequately rated mount; verify the mount and installation requirements for the unit before relying on that option.

Performance and software: what the historical evidence does—and does not—show

The Z1 was sold with varied processors and graphics hardware, so performance depends on the installed configuration and the job. HP’s datasheet is not a single benchmark result, and the available historical accounts do not establish how a particular used system will perform today.

In a 2012 personal account, Gavin Gear reported using one configured Z1 with Photoshop CS6, Premiere Pro CS6, and After Effects CS6, and described its performance as quite good. That is an impression of one system running software of its time, not a repeatable benchmark or evidence that current versions of those applications will install or run well. Check the requirements of the software you intend to use against the exact hardware and operating system of the machine you are considering.

What to check before buying a used HP Z1

Because components and condition vary, assess the specific machine rather than assuming that a Z1 listing represents a standard configuration. Before committing, verify:

Best Value
HP Z4 G4 Workstation, Intel Xeon W-2133 (6-Core) up to 3.9GHz, 64GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD + 2TB HDD, Nvidia Quadro P400 2GB, USB 3.1, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • HP Z4 G4 Workstation Tower
  • Intel Xeon W-2133 6-Core 3.6GHz (3.9GHz Turbo)
  • 64GB DDR4 Memory - Nvidia Quadro P400 2GB
  • 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD (boot) + 2TB HDD (storage)
  • Windows 11 Pro 64-bit
  • Identity and documentation: Get the product number and serial number, then locate the matching HP specifications and service information.
  • Installed hardware: Confirm the CPU, GPU, memory capacity and type, and storage devices. Compare them with the seller’s description and your workload.
  • Screen and physical condition: Inspect the panel for damage and test the stand, enclosure, and latches where possible.
  • Ports and accessories: Check the connections you need and establish which accessories are included.
  • Seller terms: Confirm the return policy, warranty if any, and the condition represented by the seller. Current prices and availability have not been verified here.
  • Upgrade compatibility: Check the exact unit’s documentation before purchasing DDR3 memory or SATA storage; shared product branding does not guarantee a part will fit or work.

Who the HP Z1 makes sense for

The original Z1 is most compelling when a buyer specifically wants its large integrated display and values the ability to open and service an all-in-one enclosure. It may be a poor fit if the computer must be moved often, if rear ports need frequent access, or if the intended workload depends on modern software support that has not been confirmed. Compare a used Z1 with a separate workstation and monitor on the actual installed CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display condition, service needs, and seller terms—not on the model name alone.
