Hewlett-Packard recovered more than $1.8 million in a civil case tied to a computer sales fraud scheme that began before HP merged with Compaq, according to an August 15, 2003, report by EE Times. The criminal case ended with Leroy Anthony Sallee pleading guilty—not with a jury verdict. The report said HP’s Ohio civil case was closed, while Compaq’s separate complaint in Middlesex County remained pending.
How the reported scheme worked
According to EE Times, Sallee used Compaq’s education discount to obtain more than $5.7 million in computer equipment for $3.1 million. He then resold equipment through unauthorized supplier channels, including brokers and independent distributors.
Compaq reportedly discovered the activity in late February 2002 after receiving a purchase order on Case Western Reserve University letterhead for approximately $5 million in products. When Compaq checked with the university, it learned the university had not issued the order. Investigators found evidence at S-Systems Inc.’s Massachusetts warehouse. The report says Sallee sold some of the equipment and transferred funds to bank accounts in Ohio.
What happened in the criminal case
EE Times reported that Sallee pleaded guilty on July 22, 2003, in U.S. District Court in Boston to 14 counts of mail and wire fraud and one count involving interstate and foreign shipment of stolen goods. The report describes a guilty plea, not a jury verdict.

How HP recovered the money
Compaq filed a civil suit in May 2002 seeking to recover money and property damages. After the Compaq-HP merger, HP recovered more than $1.8 million in a civil lawsuit against S-Systems and Sallee, according to EE Times. The report says that recovery closed HP’s civil case in Ohio. It does not specify the legal mechanism for the recovery or how the amount was allocated.
The Ohio case was distinct from Compaq’s original civil complaint in Middlesex County, which EE Times said remained pending at the time of its August 2003 report. The article is trade-press coverage; it does not provide a court judgment or docket record.
