If an HP printer prints a PCL XL error page instead of your document, start with a firmware update. If the error remains, use the reinstall steps for your exact printer family—not a one-size-fits-all driver fix. HP documents this sequence for specific Color LaserJet Pro models; other printers may need different instructions.
First, confirm what is producing the error
A PCL XL error page is a printer output that replaces the intended document. This is different from an error message shown only by a Windows application. Check the printer’s complete model name and number before following model-specific steps: HP’s recommended sequence differs across printer families.
The instructions below cover the Color LaserJet Pro 3200 and MFP 3300 families, and the Color LaserJet Pro 4201–4203 and MFP 4301–4303 families. If your model is not listed, use its own HP support instructions rather than assuming these fixes apply.

Update firmware before reinstalling the driver
Color LaserJet Pro 3200 and MFP 3300
HP recommends updating the printer firmware first. For these models, firmware can be updated from the printer panel or through HP’s software and driver downloads page. The printer-panel method requires a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection; it does not work if the printer is connected only by USB. A USB-only printer should use HP’s website route. See HP’s instructions for the 3200 and 3300 series.

Do not turn off the printer during a firmware update. HP warns that interrupting the update can permanently damage the printer.
Color LaserJet Pro 4201–4203 and MFP 4301–4303
HP identifies a firmware issue for these named series. Update the firmware, then try printing again. Reinstall the driver only if the error continues; HP says not to reinstall it when the firmware update resolves the problem. Follow the HP steps for the 4201–4203 and 4301–4303 series.

If the error remains, remove and re-add the printer
For 3200 and 3300 models
If the firmware update does not fix the error, HP’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions call for removing the existing printer and its driver, then adding the printer again. HP describes adding it by TCP/IP address. Use the model-specific instructions linked above so you remove the correct device and driver and follow the applicable setup sequence.

For 4201–4203 and 4301–4303 models
Reinstall the driver only after updating firmware and confirming the error still occurs. Use HP’s instructions for this model family rather than applying the 3200/3300 procedure by default.

Choose the fix based on your printer and connection
- Exact model: Match the complete model number to the HP article. The documented steps are not established as a universal fix for every HP printer.
- Windows version: HP’s cited reinstallation instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 for the named families.
- Connection type: For the 3200/3300 family, the printer-panel firmware route requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet. USB-only printers need the HP website route.
- Where the error appears: If the printer physically produces the error page, follow printer troubleshooting. If only an application displays an error and the printer does not print that page, this symptom-specific guidance may not fit.
Why a generic driver change is not the first step
Microsoft’s documentation discusses PCL XL implementation issues in Windows drivers and describes the modern Windows print platform. For printer-device development on Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft recommends the IPP inbox class driver with Print Support Apps. That is platform and developer guidance, not a universal consumer fix for an HP printer that prints a PCL XL page. See Microsoft’s PCL XL documentation.
HP also has a separate article about driver installation failures for certain Enterprise and PageWide products, including PCL 6 package and operating-system compatibility. It addresses those listed products and an installation-failure scenario; it does not establish driver mismatch as the cause of every PCL XL error page. Consult it only if your printer and problem match its scope: HP’s driver installation guidance for specified Enterprise and PageWide models.

When these steps do not match your printer
If your model is outside the series above, locate its complete model number and follow that printer’s HP support page. The cited documentation does not establish one cause or one repair sequence for all HP printers, Windows releases, applications, or connection types. It also does not support replacing the printer, cable, toner, or another part as a general remedy for this error.
