At their announced U.S. starting prices, the October 2026 HP OmniBook 5 14 costs $699.99 and Apple’s MacBook Neo costs $599—a $100 difference. That is a launch-price comparison, not a guaranteed gap at checkout. HP promotes an OLED touchscreen option, but its announcement does not establish that the entry configuration includes it; Apple’s Neo specifications are more fully defined.

How much more does the HP cost?

HP announced the OmniBook 5 14 AI PC on October 1, 2026, with a U.S. starting price of $699.99 and expected October availability through HP.com and Best Buy (HP’s announcement). Apple announced MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, starting at $599 in the U.S.; qualifying U.S. education buyers can get it starting at $499 (Apple’s announcement).

The $100 difference is calculated from the two consumer starting prices announced for the U.S. It does not guarantee that the products will remain $100 apart in stores: promotions, retailer pricing, and the specific configurations on offer can change what buyers pay.

What do the announced specifications establish?

What matters MacBook Neo HP OmniBook 5 14 announced October 2026
U.S. starting price $599; $499 for qualifying U.S. education buyers (Apple, March 2026). $699.99 (HP, October 2026); expected on HP.com and Best Buy in October.
Display 13-inch LED-backlit IPS; 2408 × 1506 resolution, 219 ppi, 500 nits; supports sRGB and one billion colors (Apple technical specifications for the 2026 model). HP promotes up to a 2.5K OLED touchscreen, 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, and up to 620 nits for the line. The announcement does not confirm these as base-SKU specifications.
Memory and storage 8GB unified memory; 256GB or 512GB SSD options. Not stated for the October 2026 base configuration in HP’s announcement.
Battery life Apple estimates up to 16 hours of video streaming or up to 11 hours of wireless web use. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Not stated for the October 2026 base configuration in HP’s announcement.
Ports One USB-C port supporting USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s and DisplayPort; one USB-C port supporting USB 2 up to 480 Mb/s; 3.5-mm headphone jack. Exact October 2026 configuration details are not stated in HP’s announcement.
Operating system macOS. Windows PC.
Processor and performance Apple lists an A18 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. The October announcement does not establish a comparable exact configuration or independent performance results.

Apple’s Neo specifications are listed on its MacBook Neo technical specifications page. HP’s display figures are line-level “up to” claims, not a promise that every configuration has the brightest OLED panel. Confirm the actual panel on the retail SKU before treating it as part of what the $699.99 entry price buys.

Does the extra $100 buy an OLED touchscreen?

Not necessarily. HP’s October announcement says the OmniBook 5 line offers up to a 2.5K OLED touch display, up to 620 nits, and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. “Up to” describes the range’s highest stated capability; it does not identify the panel fitted to the least expensive configuration. The extra announced starting-price amount therefore does not, by itself, establish that buyers get an OLED touchscreen.

For comparison, Apple specifies the Neo’s 13-inch IPS display at 2408 × 1506 pixels and 500 nits. Those figures make the Neo’s panel easier to assess on paper, while the HP announcement leaves the entry model’s display unresolved.

What should you verify before choosing?

If you are considering the HP

  • Check the exact model number and its retailer listing; do not assume a feature promoted for the product line is included in the base SKU.
  • Confirm whether that SKU has the OLED touchscreen, its resolution and brightness, and the memory and storage capacity.
  • Check the port list and current price for the configuration you can actually buy.

If you are considering the Neo

  • Choose between the listed 256GB and 512GB SSD configurations; both have 8GB unified memory.
  • Check whether you qualify for Apple’s U.S. education price if that price is relevant to your purchase.
  • Consider the two USB-C ports’ different data speeds and the apps and services you need to use with macOS.

Do not use specifications from another OmniBook 5 generation to fill in the gaps. HP’s January 2026 support page covers a distinct 14-hh0000 series, including a 14-inch 2K OLED option (HP 14-hh0000 series specifications). HP’s 2025 announcement describes another Snapdragon-based 14-inch OmniBook 5, including a named configuration with 16GB RAM, a 512GB PCIe SSD, and a 2K OLED non-touch display (HP’s 2025 announcement). Neither source establishes the specifications of the October 2026 Intel AI PC.

Which laptop makes more sense?

Choose based on the platform and the configuration you can verify, rather than assuming the higher starting price proves the HP is faster or better equipped. Apple publishes the Neo’s processor, memory, storage options, display, ports, and manufacturer battery estimates. HP’s October launch announcement does not provide enough matched configuration detail to compare those areas across entry models, and no like-for-like independent benchmark for the exact new HP SKU is established here.
