The HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e is a wide-format inkjet all-in-one that prints, copies, and scans, with support for paper up to A3/11×17. Its published specifications make it a plausible fit for a small office that occasionally needs larger documents alongside everyday printing. But those specifications are not a substitute for independent testing: print quality, real-world speed, reliability, and running costs remain unverified here.
What the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e offers
HP describes the 9720e as a color inkjet all-in-one with print, copy, and scan functions. The US product listing specifies a 250-sheet input tray, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and a 2.7-inch color touchscreen. These features target office work that mixes routine documents with occasional oversized prints. HP’s US product listing
Can the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e print 11×17 paper?
Yes. HP lists printing up to A3/11×17, including borderless output. That makes the printer suitable for documents such as tabloid-size charts, flyers, and layouts, subject to using compatible paper and print settings. HP’s specifications identify automatic two-sided printing for A4/Letter; they do not establish automatic duplex printing at A3/11×17. HP US support specifications

HP publishes separate speed figures by mode, so they should not be treated as a single real-world speed guarantee.

| Specification | HP-published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Print speed, professional mode | Up to 22 ppm black; up to 18 ppm color | Manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement |
| Print speed, general office mode | Up to 34 ppm | Different mode from professional; not a measured real-world result |
| Input capacity | 250 sheets | HP specification |
| Output capacity | 75 sheets | HP specification |
| Recommended monthly volume | 250–1,500 pages | HP’s recommended range; its 30,000-page monthly duty cycle is a maximum, not a recommended ongoing workload |
These figures come from HP’s US support specifications, created in 2026. Actual speed can vary with document content, settings, connection, and other conditions; no independent speed test is established here.
Which ink cartridges does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e use?
It depends on the regional product variant. HP’s US support specification identifies HP 936 black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges. HP’s Ireland listing identifies HP 937 cartridges for its regional 9720e, while HP’s US listing uses product number 53N95A. A related, non-e OfficeJet Pro 9720 listed in Canada specifies HP 938 cartridges. The model name alone is not enough to choose replacements.

- US 9720e: HP 936 family, according to HP US support.
- Ireland 9720e: HP 937 family, according to HP Ireland.
- Canada’s related non-e 9720: HP 938 family, according to HP Canada support; this is not the same model designation.
Before buying ink, match the printer’s exact product number and country to HP’s cartridge listing. HP says cartridge yields vary considerably with page content and other factors. Without current local cartridge prices and a clearly applicable yield basis, a cost-per-page estimate would be unreliable.

HP+ is presented as an optional setup choice, not a requirement to use the printer. Choosing HP+ does, however, bring conditions: HP says it requires an HP account, an ongoing internet connection, and exclusive use of Original HP ink for the life of the printer. Buyers who want offline operation or broader cartridge choice should weigh those terms before selecting the offer. HP also says the printer uses dynamic security and that firmware updates may block cartridges that use a non-HP chip. HP US product page and disclaimer

What warranty does it include?
Warranty terms vary by region and offer. HP’s US support specifications state a one-year limited hardware warranty, with an option to extend to two years with the HP+ offer. HP Ireland describes a different route involving HP+ activation and separate registration for up to three years. Check the terms attached to the exact regional product and purchase offer rather than assuming either period applies everywhere. HP US support; HP Ireland specifications
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e worth buying?
The published feature set is relevant if you need an all-in-one that can handle occasional A3/11×17 jobs, uses an ADF for multi-page scanning or copying, and offers both Wi-Fi and Ethernet. The key trade-offs to consider are the HP+ account, connectivity, and ink conditions if you opt in, plus the need to confirm the cartridge family for your region.

This is a specification-led assessment, not a hands-on review. No independent evidence is established for print or scan quality, setup experience, noise, reliability, measured speed, or actual ink cost. Those unanswered points—and the printer’s current local price—prevent a confident value verdict or a claim that it beats competing models.
