The HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e is a capable four-function inkjet for a small office that prints mostly documents and wants fax, Ethernet, automatic two-sided printing, and a 250-sheet paper tray. CHIP’s 2024 hands-on test found fast, high-quality text printing. Its main workflow compromise is scanning: the 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) flips pages to capture their backs, so two-sided batches take longer than on a single-pass duplex scanner. Ink costs also depend on your region, current cartridge prices, print mix, and whether you opt into HP+.
What the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e does well
CHIP Testcenter gave the printer a 1.5 (“Sehr gut”) in its review, first published April 15, 2024. Its test reported strong text quality and about 22 pages per minute for black text. That result is evidence from CHIP’s test methods, not a guaranteed speed for every document, computer, or connection. CHIP also found its text-copy quality excellent and rated its graphics and photo output highly.
The model combines printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. It supports automatic duplex printing, so it can print on both sides without you manually turning the paper. For a small office that mainly prints routine correspondence, forms, and reports, its mix of document speed and office features is more relevant than its advertised maximum photo resolution.

How fast does it print and scan?
HP rates the 9120e for up to 22 A4 ISO pages per minute in black and 18 in color. Those are manufacturer-rated figures; CHIP measured 22.1 pages per minute in the body of its review and 22.2 in its score table for black text. CHIP’s other results included an 11-second first black-text page, a graphic print in 1 minute 8 seconds, a photo print in 45 seconds, a black-and-white document copy in 11 seconds, and a photo scan in 6 seconds. All are CHIP test results under its own conditions.

HP lists scan speeds of up to 8 A4 images per minute for simplex scanning and 4 images per minute for duplex scanning at 200 ppi. The distinction matters if your routine involves stacks of double-sided originals: the ADF turns each sheet over to scan its reverse, rather than capturing both sides in one pass. That makes the 9120e less convenient for frequent two-sided batch scanning than a model with a single-pass duplex ADF.
Paper handling and everyday workflow
The printer has one 250-sheet input tray, a 35-sheet ADF, and a 60-sheet output tray. A single tray keeps paper handling straightforward, but it cannot keep two paper types or sizes loaded separately. If you regularly switch between letterhead and plain paper, or need a second tray for uninterrupted work, this is a meaningful limitation. HP gives a maximum monthly duty cycle of 25,000 pages and a recommended monthly volume of up to 1,500 pages; the recommended volume is the more useful guide to a routine workload, while the duty-cycle figure is a maximum rather than a target.

The connection options are broad for a home or small office: dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, Wi-Fi Direct, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Chrome OS support, and the HP app are listed in HP’s specifications.

What does the 9120e cost to run?
CHIP’s 2024 test estimated running costs at 2.3 euro cents per ISO A4 black-text page and 8.3 euro cents per ISO A4 color page. These are dated test-time estimates, not current price quotes. Your actual cost depends on local cartridge pricing, the amount of color and coverage in your documents, and how much you print. HP identifies the model as eligible for Instant Ink, but subscription prices, availability, and terms vary and can change; check current local terms before choosing a plan.

Cartridges differ by region. HP’s cited North American support listing specifies four individual HP 936 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. The European product sheet for configuration 403X8B lists four HP 937 cartridges, along with higher-yield 937e EvoMore options. That European sheet gives standard HP 937 yields of 1,250 pages for black and 800 pages per color cartridge; its 937e figures are 2,500 black and 1,650 per color. These are manufacturer-declared yields under standard testing, not a promise of the same output in your use. Check your printer’s market and exact cartridge number before ordering.
What choosing HP+ means
HP+ is an optional setup choice, not simply another name for owning the printer. HP’s datasheet says activating it requires an HP account, an ongoing internet connection, and exclusive use of Original HP ink for the printer’s lifetime. The same datasheet says the printer uses dynamic security to block cartridges using a non-HP chip. Review the current terms for your region before enabling HP+; do not assume that the conditions are identical across all markets or setup choices.

Who should buy the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e?
It is a good fit if
- You want a document-focused color all-in-one with print, copy, scan, and fax.
- A 250-sheet tray, automatic duplex printing, and Ethernet or USB are useful in your office.
- Your double-sided scanning is occasional rather than a daily, high-volume task.
- You are comfortable checking the correct regional cartridge and assessing ink costs against your own print volume.
Consider another model if
- You frequently scan large stacks of two-sided pages and want both sides captured in one pass.
- You need more than one paper tray for different media or fewer interruptions.
- You need a clear physical cancel control for jobs started remotely.
- You want to choose ink freely: understand HP’s cartridge and HP+ conditions before committing to setup.
Printzone’s early-2024 Australia-market comparison positions the 9120e below the 9130e: the 9130e adds a second paper tray and single-pass duplex scanning, while the 9120e has one tray and a reversing ADF. Because that is a retailer’s comparison and applies to its market context, verify the exact local models and specifications when comparing them. Other alternatives listed on CHIP’s comparison page include the HP OfficeJet Pro 9012e, Epson EcoTank ET-4950, Canon PIXMA TS7650i, and Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830DTWF. They differ in ink system and intended use, so compare current purchase and ink costs at your volume, scanning method, paper capacity, and connectivity rather than relying on model names alone.
Sources and evidence limits
The strongest independent performance evidence here is CHIP Testcenter’s review, published April 15, 2024; its comparison rankings and retail prices can change over time. Which? lists the exact model and describes its lab-test categories but does not disclose the detailed score or findings to nonsubscribers, so no rating from Which? is assumed here. HP specifications are manufacturer claims. The HP support result lists North American supplies, while the European datasheet describes a different cartridge configuration.
