The HP EX900 500GB is an entry-level M.2 2280 NVMe SSD rated for sequential reads up to 2,100 MB/s and writes up to 1,500 MB/s. It may suit a compatible PCIe 3.0 system when priced competitively, but the rating is not a guarantee of real-world speed: Tom’s Hardware’s 2018 review found weak mixed-workload performance in its tested sample. Check your computer’s NVMe support and the exact unit’s warranty before buying.
Is the HP EX900 500GB worth it?
It can be a reasonable budget upgrade for a computer with a supported M.2 PCIe/NVMe slot, especially if you are moving from a hard drive or SATA SSD and find the EX900 at an attractive current price. There is not enough current price or stock information here to call it a good value today; compare live listings against alternatives of similar capacity and warranty.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2018 review described the EX900 as a solid drive for a DRAM-less design and a plausible entry-level upgrade if the price was right. The review also flagged low mixed-workload performance. That assessment applies to its historical testing and pricing context, not to a current market comparison or necessarily every later production revision. Tom’s Hardware’s 2018 review

The independent 2018 review lists the same sequential and random ratings for its reviewed sample. Its findings are useful historical test context, but they should not be confused with a current, independently tested comparison against drives now on sale.
Does the HP EX900 have DRAM?
Tom’s Hardware identifies its 2018 EX900 sample as DRAM-less and using Host Memory Buffer (HMB), which lets the drive use a portion of system memory for mapping information. The current HP Storage/Biwin specification page does not confirm the controller, NAND, or DRAM configuration. Treat the design details as specific to the sample reviewed in 2018 rather than a guarantee for every production revision.

Will the HP EX900 500GB work in my laptop or desktop?
The EX900 is an M.2 2280 drive using PCIe 3.0 x4 and NVMe. A physical M.2 slot by itself is not sufficient: the system must support PCIe/NVMe storage. Check the exact laptop or motherboard manual for the slot’s supported protocol, length, boot support, and any capacity limits before ordering.

There is a version discrepancy in the published protocol specification. Tom’s Hardware’s 2018 review identifies the tested drive as NVMe 1.3, while current HP Storage/Biwin materials specify NVMe 1.4; both identify PCIe 3.0 x4. The manufacturer describes broad compatibility, but that does not establish compatibility with every M.2-equipped computer. Tom’s Hardware specifically qualifies compatibility to supported NVMe-capable HP systems. HP Storage/Biwin product information · Tom’s Hardware review

How long is the HP EX900 warranty?
Current HP Storage/Biwin materials list a five-year limited warranty and 200 TBW endurance for the 500GB tier. Tom’s Hardware’s 2018 review lists the same 200 TBW rating but a three-year warranty for the version it reviewed. The warranty difference is unresolved at the individual-unit and regional level, so confirm the terms on the packaging or with the seller or manufacturer for the exact product being sold. TBW is the stated total bytes written endurance rating; it is not a warranty duration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWho should consider the HP EX900?
- Consider it if your computer documentation confirms an M.2 2280 PCIe/NVMe slot and the live price is competitive for a 500GB drive.
- Compare carefully if your workloads involve frequent mixed or sustained activity; the 2018 review flagged weak mixed-workload performance for its sample.
- Verify before purchase if warranty length, exact internal components, or compatibility with a particular computer is a deciding factor.
Do not rely on historical launch pricing as evidence of current value. Price, stock, seller, and warranty applicability can vary by listing and region.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- PCIe Gen4 performance improves slow boot times and launches apps faster at speeds up to 5,000MB/s. (Based on read speed, unless otherwise stated. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance will vary depending on host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Storage up to 2TB* keeps your photos, videos and other important files within reach. (1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1 TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less, depending on operating environment.)
- Slim M.2 SSD design utilizes a single-sided M.2 2280 to be compatible with thin laptops and small PCs.
- Multitask with breathtaking responsiveness, transfer files faster, and improve your workflow with NVMe and Western Digital nCache 4.0 Technologies.
- Move your data to your new drive with free downloadable Acronis True Image for Western Digital data migration software.
