The HP ENVY 6165e is a compact home all-in-one for printing, copying, scanning, and mobile faxing, but its low-yield cartridges make it a better fit for light, occasional printing than for a busy household. It offers useful basics such as automatic two-sided printing and phone-friendly connectivity; the trade-offs are slow output, no automatic document feeder, and potentially frequent ink replacements.
Is the HP ENVY 6165e a good printer for home use?
It can suit a home that prints modest quantities of schoolwork, forms, and occasional photos, and scans one page at a time. It is less appealing if you print often, need to scan stacks of documents, or expect accurate photo color. RTINGS describes documents as adequate, with occasional faint or crooked output, and says scans are detailed with neutral color. Its review also identifies slow printing, high cost per print, and frequent maintenance as drawbacks for heavier use. Those are RTINGS’ findings, not results from hands-on testing for this review. RTINGS’ HP ENVY 6165e review
Best suited to
- Light-to-moderate home printing, within HP’s recommended monthly volume.
- Households that value a compact print, copy, and scan device with Wi-Fi and automatic duplex printing.
- Occasional flatbed scans and casual photo prints where color accuracy is not critical.
Look elsewhere if
- You print large volumes or want low ongoing ink costs.
- You regularly scan multipage documents and need an automatic document feeder (ADF) or duplex scanning.
- You need faithful photo color or fast output.
What features and specifications does it offer?
HP lists the 6165e as a print/copy/scan all-in-one with mobile fax. It has a 2.4-inch color touchscreen, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 device connectivity, and automatic two-sided printing. The input tray holds up to 100 sheets. HP’s specifications page gives a recommended monthly print volume of 100 to 400 pages, and an upper duty-cycle figure of up to 1,000 pages per month. The latter is a maximum duty-cycle rating, not a recommended sustained workload.
| Feature | HP-listed specification or review finding |
|---|---|
| Functions | Print, copy, scan, and mobile fax (HP) |
| Print speed | Up to 10 pages per minute (ppm) black and 7 ppm color, ISO-rated by HP; RTINGS describes real-use output as slow and cites about 8 ppm in its summary |
| Paper input | Up to 100 sheets (HP) |
| Monthly volume | 100–400 pages recommended; up to 1,000 pages/month maximum duty cycle (HP, not the recommended ongoing volume) |
| Connectivity | Dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and USB 2.0 device connection (HP); RTINGS also lists Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint, Mopria, and HP Smart app support |
| Screen | 2.4-inch color touchscreen (HP) |
The 10 ppm and 7 ppm values are manufacturer-rated ISO speeds, not a promise that every document will print at those rates. RTINGS’ approximately 8 ppm summary is an independent real-use assessment; it should not be conflated with HP’s separate black and color ratings. HP’s 6165e datasheet provides the rated speed and cartridge details.

How good are its printing and photo results?
RTINGS finds the printer acceptable for ordinary home documents, while noting that some output can appear faint or crooked. For photos, it reports that detail is retained, but the prints look over-bright and color is not very accurate. That makes the 6165e reasonable for casual snapshots, not a photo specialist when faithful color matters.
RTINGS also characterizes the device as compact, with decent connectivity and a feature-rich mobile app. Its supported routes include AirPrint, Mopria, HP Smart, and Wi-Fi Direct. HP provides setup, reference, and user guides through its support page.

How well does it scan?
HP specifies a flatbed scanner with optical resolution up to 1,200 dpi and a maximum scan size around letter/A4 dimensions. RTINGS describes scans as detailed with neutral colors. The practical limitation is workflow: there is no ADF and no duplex scanning, so each original must be placed and handled on the flatbed. It is suitable for occasional receipts, forms, or single pages, but tedious for batches of multipage paperwork.

What ink does the HP ENVY 6165e use?
The printer uses two cartridges: an HP 68 black cartridge and an HP 68 tri-color cartridge. HP also lists the HP 68e EvoMore black cartridge, which has a higher nominal yield than the standard black cartridge. In the reviewed configuration, there is no high-yield tri-color option listed. HP’s datasheet gives these nominal yields:

| Cartridge | HP-listed nominal yield | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| HP 68 Black Original | Approximately 160 pages | Standard black cartridge; real yield varies with content and other factors (HP) |
| HP 68 Tri-Color Original | Approximately 120 pages | One cartridge contains all three colors; real yield varies (HP) |
| HP 68e EvoMore Black | Approximately 320 pages | Higher-yield black option; HP does not list a matching high-yield tri-color option for this configuration |
These are manufacturer-listed nominal yields, not guaranteed page counts for an individual household. Actual yield depends on what is printed and other factors. RTINGS reports about 140 black-and-white pages per standard black cartridge in its test summary, updated September 25, 2026; its detailed test tables are restricted. RTINGS also says color yield is lower but does not publish an exact figure in the available summary, so an exact color yield or per-page cost should not be inferred. RTINGS’ review and test summary
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the HP ENVY 6165e expensive to run?
It may be, especially if you print frequently or rely on color. RTINGS identifies poor page yield and high cost per print as key weaknesses. Because the printer has one tri-color cartridge rather than separate cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges, it may require replacement when one color runs out even if the others remain. The HP 68e EvoMore black cartridge can reduce how often black-heavy users replace black ink, but it does not address the tri-color cartridge’s yield.

Avoid touching the chip or ink nozzles. A clogged printhead will disrupt the printing function
HP marks the model as eligible for Instant Ink, but eligibility alone does not establish the current price, trial, or offer available to you. Check the terms for your country and the exact printer listing before comparing a subscription with buying cartridges. Promotional bundles can change: RTINGS describes a six-month HP+ subscription with its reviewed 6165e bundle, while HP’s datasheet also advertises a six-month Instant Ink bundle. Neither should be assumed to accompany every current listing.

How does it compare with alternatives?
RTINGS names the Canon PIXMA TR7120 and Brother MFC-J1205W as alternatives, and judges the Brother more favorably for page yield and long-term running cost. That is RTINGS’ comparison, not a current-price comparison; check each model’s current regional price, cartridge availability, and features before choosing.
For a meaningful comparison, estimate your monthly pages and compare standard and high-yield cartridge options—especially color—alongside print speed, scanning workflow, photo color quality, and phone-platform support. A model with an ADF or duplex scanning may matter more than a small difference in print speed if you regularly handle paperwork.
Who should buy the HP ENVY 6165e?
Choose it if you want a compact home all-in-one for occasional printing, copying, and flatbed scanning, and you can accept replacing low-yield cartridges. Consider another printer if your household prints heavily, scans batches, or prioritizes photo color accuracy. Check the exact regional SKU and any included bundle: RTINGS identifies the 6165e as a North American Best Buy variant in the ENVY 6100e series, in white, product code 714L6A. Series features may be shared while model numbers vary by retailer, region, and color.
