The HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Desktop Mini was a compact business PC that IT Pro found capable of everyday office work, but the review’s performance and prices date to 2014. Its findings describe one Core i7 configuration—not every 800 G1—and cannot establish whether a used unit is a good buy today. For a secondhand system, verify the exact CPU, ports, memory, storage, condition and included accessories before deciding.

What IT Pro reviewed

Cliff Joseph’s IT Pro review, published on 19 August 2014, tested an EliteDesk 800 G1 Desktop Mini configured with a quad-core Intel Core i7 running at 2 GHz, 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD. IT Pro reported an overall benchmark score of 90 percent in its own tests and said the system handled Microsoft Office and web browsing well. Those are period-specific results for that configuration, not fresh tests or a guarantee of how another unit will perform.

The review described the chassis as 34 mm high and 1.3 kg, and noted a detachable stand and VESA mounting provisions. These are the reviewer’s product details, not measurements of an individual used computer. Under intensive video and 3D rendering workloads, Joseph heard a gentle fan hum.

Ports, monitors and connectivity

The reviewed system had two DisplayPort connections and VGA, but no HDMI. IT Pro also listed six USB 3 connections, front headphone and microphone sockets, rear line-out and Gigabit Ethernet. It noted that four rear USB ports sit close together, which may make bulky plugs awkward to use side by side.

According to the review, i5 and i7 configurations supported three displays, while the i3 configuration was limited to two. Do not assume that a particular used unit has the reviewed ports or display capability: check its CPU and inspect its rear panel. HP’s Maintenance & Service Guide identifies DisplayPort, VGA, USB 3.0, RJ-45 Ethernet, line-out and power among the Mini’s rear connections, while cautioning that features vary by model.

If your monitor has only HDMI, a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter may be an option, but check the adapter’s direction and the resolution and refresh rate you need. The review’s tested configuration had no Bluetooth support; confirm wireless capability on the exact machine rather than assuming every listing has identical hardware.

Can you upgrade the memory or storage?

HP documents two DDR3 SODIMM sockets for the G1 Mini and procedures for replacing memory and the hard drive. The Hardware Reference Guide describes removing the access panel with the rear thumbscrew and says most procedures in its hardware-upgrade chapter require no tools.

That documentation makes memory and storage servicing practical, but it does not mean every module or drive will fit every configuration. Before ordering parts, identify the product number and installed memory and drive, then check the relevant HP documentation for the specific system. Drive interface, mounting and cables can differ. Disconnect AC power and follow HP’s safety instructions before opening the chassis. HP’s support page lists the Maintenance & Service Guide, Hardware Reference Guide, Illustrated Parts & Service Map and other documents; their availability does not establish that replacement parts are currently in stock.

What did it cost at review?

These are the prices IT Pro reported in 2014, excluding VAT. They are historical review prices, not current used-market valuations.

Configuration or price step Price reported by IT Pro
Entry configuration: Core i3, 4 GB memory, 500 GB hard drive £435 excluding VAT
Core i5 price step £496 excluding VAT
Top configuration tested: Core i7, 8 GB memory, 256 GB SSD £1,028 excluding VAT

Joseph’s verdict was: “The compact design, high performance and connectivity options all come at a high price.” That judgment applied to the product’s 2014 pricing, not to what a secondhand machine should cost now. Current market value and availability are not established here.

What to check before buying a used 800 G1 Mini

Listings can describe different configurations, so compare the actual units rather than relying on the model name alone:

  • Processor: Get the exact CPU model; it affects performance and, according to IT Pro, the number of supported displays.
  • Memory: Confirm the installed amount and what the specific system supports before planning an upgrade.
  • Storage: Check drive type, capacity, condition or health, and whether its mounting and cables are present.
  • Displays and ports: Inspect the outputs and count the USB ports. Check whether your monitor requires an adapter.
  • Software: Ask what operating system is installed, whether the seller includes a valid license, and whether recovery media is supplied. The documentation cited here does not establish the support status of a particular operating-system installation.
  • Completeness and condition: Verify that the power supply and any promised stand or mounting hardware are included, and inspect the chassis and ports.
  • Asking price: Compare current listings for units with similar specifications, condition, software and accessories; the 2014 prices above are not a substitute for that comparison.

Verdict

IT Pro’s 2014 review presents the EliteDesk 800 G1 Desktop Mini as a very small business PC with strong general office performance for its era, useful USB connectivity and documented service access for memory and storage. Its limitations in the tested system included no HDMI, no Bluetooth and fan noise under intensive rendering. Whether a particular used example suits you depends on its verified configuration, condition, accessories and current asking price—not the historical review score or launch-era price.
