The HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 is a capable work laptop in the specific Ryzen AI 7 450 configuration reviewed by Notebookcheck: it delivered stable sustained performance and nearly 19 hours in that outlet’s controlled Wi-Fi test. The trade-offs are audible fans under load and 32 GB of memory soldered in the tested unit. Because HP sells materially different versions under the same family name, check the exact product number before assuming you will get the same screen, RAM layout, or performance.
Which EliteBook 8 G2a 16 did Notebookcheck review?
Notebookcheck’s September 21, 2026 review covers the HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 DL9T9ET#ABD. Its results and specifications describe that test machine, not every EliteBook 8 G2a 16 sold in every region.
| Component | Notebookcheck review unit |
|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI 7 450: 8 cores and 16 threads, with four Zen 5 cores boosting up to 5.1 GHz and four Zen 5c cores up to 3.6 GHz |
| Graphics | Integrated AMD Radeon 860M |
| Memory | 32 GB dual-channel LPDDR5-7500, soldered |
| Display | 16-inch matte IPS, 1920 × 1200 |
| Storage | 1 TB Western Digital M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD |
| Other listed hardware | Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, optional listed 5G hardware, 77 Wh battery, and 5 MP IR webcam |
| Chassis and ports | Metal chassis, backlit keyboard with numpad, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, and USB-A |
| Operating system | Windows 11 Pro |
Notebookcheck’s review also describes the processor as a 28 W TDP part and reports 30 W sustained and short-burst platform limits in its test configuration. Best Performance and Balanced retained those 30 W limits, while Best Power Efficiency used 25 W. These are review-unit settings, not guaranteed behavior for every G2a 16 configuration or firmware version. Notebookcheck’s review and test details provide the full context.
How fast is it for work?
Notebookcheck found stable sustained performance without throttling and described the chassis as cool-running. That combination makes the reviewed Ryzen AI 7 450 model a strong fit for typical productivity workloads that benefit from a capable processor and 32 GB of memory. HP’s support specifications list the Ryzen AI 7 450 with 8 cores, 16 threads, boost up to 5.1 GHz, and 50 NPU TOPS; HP also lists Ryzen AI 7 PRO 450 and lower-tier Ryzen AI 5 and Ryzen 5 options for the family. The model name alone therefore does not establish which processor or performance level a listing includes. HP’s EliteBook 8 G2a 16 support specifications identify the processor options.

- AI-powered: Yes
- Processor Manufacturer: AMD
- Processor Type: Ryzen AI 7
- Processor Model: 450
- Processor Series: Ryzen AI 400 Series
Notebookcheck’s review score was 78% overall, with an 87% office weighted average. Those figures reflect that publication’s scoring system, rather than a universal measure of quality. HP’s support page cautions that performance and frequency vary by workload and configuration. It also states: “Multicore is designed to improve the performance of certain software products.”
Where the integrated graphics fit
The Radeon 860M is integrated graphics, not a substitute for a powerful discrete GPU. Notebookcheck positions it for simple graphics tasks and some older games, rather than demanding workstation graphics. If your work depends on GPU-heavy rendering, complex 3D projects, or other demanding graphics tasks, treat this configuration as a poor match unless your software and workload have been verified against its graphics capabilities.

How long does the battery last?
Notebookcheck measured almost 19 hours in its Wi-Fi/web-surfing test at 150 cd/m² on the reviewed unit. That is a controlled lab result, not a promise of everyday runtime: brighter screens, video meetings, heavier processing, wireless use, and other configuration differences can change how long a charge lasts. The test machine has a 77 Wh battery, but battery capacity alone does not predict runtime across different configurations and workloads.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is the fan noise a problem?
Notebookcheck’s clearest day-to-day drawback is loud fan noise under load in performance mode. The laptop’s reported ability to sustain performance without throttling comes with that acoustic trade-off. For quiet offices, meetings, or shared workspaces, consider whether you can use a quieter power mode or tolerate fan noise during sustained demanding work; the review does not establish that every configuration or workload will sound the same.

Can you upgrade the 32 GB of RAM?
Not in Notebookcheck’s reviewed configuration: its 32 GB LPDDR5-7500 memory is soldered. The review reports that the SSD, 5G card, and Wi-Fi card in that unit are modular, but the memory is not described as replaceable or upgradeable.
That does not mean all EliteBook 8 G2a 16 models have soldered memory. HP’s US store listings include versions with two SODIMM slots and 32 GB (1 × 32 GB) or 64 GB (2 × 32 GB) DDR5-5600. HP Ireland’s DX6E8AT listing specifies 24 GB (1 × 24 GB) DDR5-5600 with two slots. These are different configurations from the Notebookcheck test machine.

| Listing or unit | Memory configuration | Upgrade implication |
|---|---|---|
| Notebookcheck review unit, DL9T9ET#ABD | 32 GB LPDDR5-7500 soldered | Memory is not upgradeable in the reviewed configuration |
| HP US store configurations cited by Notebookcheck in September 2026 | 32 GB (1 × 32 GB) or 64 GB (2 × 32 GB) DDR5-5600; two SODIMM slots | Slot-based memory; confirm the exact product listing before purchase |
| HP Ireland DX6E8AT | 24 GB (1 × 24 GB) DDR5-5600; two slots | Slot-based memory; confirm the exact product listing before purchase |
Check the full product number and its specifications before buying if future RAM upgrades matter. Do not infer memory type from “EliteBook 8 G2a 16” or assume that a listing’s advertised capacity means the memory can be changed.
Does every version have the same display?
No. Notebookcheck’s review unit has a matte 1920 × 1200 IPS panel, but HP’s listings show meaningful panel differences within the family. A US listing describes a 400-nit, 100% sRGB non-touch display; the Ireland DX6E8AT page specifies 300 nits and 62.5% sRGB; another US listing describes a 300-nit touch panel with 45% NTSC coverage. These specifications should not be treated as interchangeable, and the figures come from distinct listings rather than a controlled comparison.

Before ordering, compare the exact SKU’s resolution, brightness, color coverage, and touch support against what you need. In particular, do not assume that the 400-nit, 100% sRGB specification applies to every G2a 16 simply because it appears on one HP listing. HP’s US product listing and HP Ireland’s DX6E8AT specifications illustrate the differences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Ryzen 7 version worth choosing?
The Ryzen AI 7 450 version is the better-defined choice if you want the tested configuration’s strong sustained productivity performance and its 32 GB of memory. But “Ryzen 7” is not enough to establish value: listings can differ in processor, memory construction, screen, storage, wireless options, warranty or security bundle, and price. Compare the full product number and the configuration’s current price rather than comparing family names alone.
Price figures in Notebookcheck’s September 2026 review refer to different contexts: around $1,960 was a reported Amazon price for a Ryzen AI 5 440 configuration with 32 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, not the Ryzen AI 7 test unit or a verified current checkout price. The review’s specifications showed €2,800 list price and $2,233.29 in the context of its reviewed European configuration. Neither figure should be read as a current quote for another region or SKU. Notebookcheck’s review identifies those price contexts.

The reviewed Ryzen AI 7 450 model makes the most sense for office work and other productivity tasks where sustained CPU performance, a large 16-inch screen, and high memory capacity matter. The near-19-hour lab battery result is encouraging, but your use may differ; the fan noise and non-upgradeable RAM in this SKU deserve more weight if quiet operation or future memory expansion is a priority.
- Good fit: productivity users who want the performance of the tested Ryzen AI 7 450 configuration and can confirm that its specific screen and soldered 32 GB memory suit their needs.
- Check alternatives carefully: buyers who need upgradeable RAM, a particular panel quality or touch support, or optional 5G. Those choices depend on the exact SKU.
- Look elsewhere or verify workload compatibility: users who need demanding workstation graphics or consistently quiet performance under sustained load.
Notebookcheck disclosed that HP Deutschland supplied the review unit as a loan and states that the manufacturer had no review authority and received no advance copy.
