The HP EliteBook 2170p is a compact 2012-era business laptop with a practical mix of ports, a full-size keyboard and user-serviceable memory and storage. Its 11.6-inch, 1366 × 768 screen and aging dual-core platform make it dated for modern work, and its operating-system support needs careful attention. It may still suit light, offline or legacy-device use if the specific unit is in good condition and you have a supported software plan.
What the EliteBook 2170p was designed to do
HP introduced the EliteBook 2170p in May 2012 as a small, travel-focused business notebook. HP called it “HP’s Ultimate Travel Companion,” a launch-era marketing description rather than an independent durability or performance finding. Its appeal was a compact footprint paired with business-oriented input devices and connectivity that many later thin laptops dropped.
HP’s published dimensions are 11.50 × 7.56 inches, with a thickness of 1.04 inches at the front. The starting weight was 2.89 lb (1.31 kg), varying with configuration. Those are original manufacturer figures, not a measurement of a particular used machine.

HP also described the chassis as business-rugged. That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not proof that any surviving laptop is undamaged or has passed an independent durability test. HP cautioned that battery life varied with model, configuration, software, features, wireless use and power settings, and that battery capacity declines with age and use. The original battery capacities therefore do not tell you the runtime or health of a used unit.
How usable is it today?
Good fit for narrow, light-duty roles
The 2170p’s small size, point stick, wired Ethernet, VGA, DisplayPort and USB ports can still be useful when travelling with legacy peripherals or maintaining older equipment. Its keyboard and pointing options may also appeal to someone who prefers a traditional business-laptop layout. Confirm that the relevant ports and input devices work on the machine you are considering.

Limits for current everyday computing
The 1366 × 768 screen is modest by current laptop standards, and the processor choices are old dual-core designs. The published specifications alone do not establish how a particular unit will perform in current applications; condition, installed memory, storage and software all matter. There is no basis here for assigning it a benchmark score or claiming that an SSD turns it into a modern-performance machine.

Those entries describe historical support, not current security coverage.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to run, but Microsoft no longer provides standard security updates, feature updates or technical assistance for it. Microsoft recommends moving to a supported system or considering its Extended Security Updates program for eligible Windows 10 PCs. Do not assume a particular EliteBook 2170p qualifies for Windows 11 or an extended-support option; eligibility depends on the exact configuration and was not established for every model variant. Can you upgrade the RAM or SSD?
Memory
HP lists two memory slots and configurations up to 16 GB DDR3. That is the model’s published ceiling across supported configurations, not a guarantee that any listing has empty slots or can accept an arbitrary module. Check the installed memory and consult the HP EliteBook 2170p support page for the Maintenance and Service Guide before buying parts or opening the laptop.

Storage
HP offered both hard-drive and SSD configurations and describes a user-removable hard drive. An SSD replacement can be a sensible way to refresh a machine that still has a mechanical drive, but first verify the drive already installed, its interface and physical form factor, and the capacity supported by the particular unit. HP’s historical listing of SSD configurations does not establish which drive a used seller has installed.

For a replacement battery, identify the exact part number from the laptop and check the replacement’s condition and return terms; the original 4-cell and 6-cell specifications do not establish current third-party stock or quality. HP specified a 65 W Smart AC adapter. If you need a dock, check the exact model and connector: HP explicitly warned that the 2170p is not compatible with docking solutions intended for the EliteBook 2570p.

What to check before buying a used 2170p
Listings may omit optional features and details that materially affect usability. Ask the seller for clear answers or photos, and test the laptop in person when possible.
- Exact processor, installed RAM, drive type and capacity.
- Display condition, including pressure marks, dead pixels or damage.
- Keyboard, touchpad and point stick operation; check whether the optional backlight is present if you need it.
- Ports you expect to use, especially USB, video outputs, Ethernet and the docking connector.
- Wireless card and any optional webcam, fingerprint reader or mobile-broadband hardware.
- Battery condition and whether the charger is included; treat stated battery life as unverified unless measured on that unit.
- Physical wear, signs of liquid exposure and whether the case, hinges and service covers are intact.
- The operating system installed and whether it can receive security updates appropriate to your use.
Use HP’s model support page and service documentation for model-specific service guidance rather than assuming parts or disassembly steps from another EliteBook apply.
Who should consider one—and who should pass?
- Consider it if you need a small, inexpensive machine for a defined light-duty or offline role, value legacy ports and a point stick, and can verify the unit’s condition and operating-system plan.
- Pass on it if you need a modern display, dependable battery life without replacement, current mainstream Windows security support, or performance for demanding applications. The original specifications do not establish those outcomes for a used example.
If comparing it with another used ultraportable, compare actual unit condition, screen size and resolution, installed memory and storage, ports and dock compatibility, battery health and the supported operating-system path. The original product sheet cannot establish the performance or value of a particular surviving machine.
