The 2023 Windows HP Dragonfly Pro is a capable 14-inch everyday laptop built around AMD’s Ryzen 7 7736U, with a bright 1920×1200 touchscreen and generous memory and storage options. Its chief compromises are a display that stops short of higher resolution and a three-port, USB-C-only layout that may require a hub. Note that this is the Windows model—not the separately named Intel-based HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook.
Which HP Dragonfly Pro is this review about?
This review covers the 2023 HP Dragonfly Pro Windows laptop: a 14-inch system with an AMD Ryzen 7 7736U processor, integrated Radeon graphics and Windows 11 Home. It is distinct from the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook, which uses an Intel processor and ChromeOS. HP’s product information and the contemporary Tom’s Guide review identify the Windows configuration.
How fast is the Ryzen 7 7736U for everyday work?
The Ryzen 7 7736U makes the Dragonfly Pro a capable choice for routine productivity, web work, video calls and moderate multitasking. Tom’s Hardware found its tested configuration generally held its own against the systems in its comparison, with stronger results in multi-core work than in lightly threaded workloads. That is a workload-specific finding, not a universal ranking: results depend on the competing processor, laptop generation and test. Tom’s Hardware’s review, Windows Central’s review and Notebookcheck’s review offer test-specific context.
The integrated Radeon graphics suit ordinary visual tasks, but the available evidence does not establish this laptop as a strong choice for demanding gaming or professional graphics workloads. If those are priorities, compare independent tests for the specific applications or games you use rather than relying on the processor name alone.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i7 1.70 GHz processor provides lightning fast speed and peak performance for the toughest of tasks and games
- With 16 GB of memory, users can run many programs without losing execution
- The 13.5" 1920 x 1280 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 1 TB SSD for spacious storage with much faster data transfer speed than standard hard drives
What is the display like?
HP specifies a 14-inch, 1920×1200 IPS touchscreen with anti-reflection Gorilla Glass NBT, a 400-nit rating and 100% sRGB coverage. Windows Central measured a peak of 426 nits and 100% sRGB on its review unit, and found the panel pleasing for everyday work and some photo editing. Those are that reviewer’s measurements and assessment, not a guarantee for every unit. The resolution tops out at 1920×1200; there is no higher-resolution option in the cited specifications. HP’s product specification sheet and Windows Central provide the respective specifications and test observations.
For general office work, browsing and media, the brightness and color coverage make for a solid panel. For detailed professional color work, treat the reviewer’s assessment as a reason to check the display against your workflow; 100% sRGB alone does not establish suitability for every color-critical task.
What configurations are available, and is the upgrade worth it?
HP lists onboard memory and storage in two configurations. Because both are onboard, do not assume they are easy to upgrade later; confirm service options for the exact model before buying.

| Configuration | Memory | Storage | Historical US price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base configuration | 16 GB LPDDR5-6400, onboard | 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD, onboard | Tom’s Guide reported a $1,399 starting price in 2023; historical, not a current quote. |
| Higher configuration | 32 GB LPDDR5-6400, onboard | 1 TB PCIe NVMe SSD, onboard | Tom’s Guide reported $1,549 in 2023; historical, not a current quote. |
The $150 difference reflects Tom’s Guide’s 2023 US review-era pricing, not today’s market price. The 32 GB/1 TB option is the more comfortable choice if you regularly keep many applications or large files in use; the 16 GB/512 GB model may be adequate for lighter everyday workloads. Check a current listing and confirm it is the Ryzen-based Windows laptop, not the Chromebook. Tom’s Guide reported the historical prices; HP lists the configurations in its 2023 product sheet.
How long does the battery last?
HP lists a 64.6 Wh battery and estimates up to 16 hours of mixed use under its named MM18 test, up to 16 hours of video playback, and up to 12 hours 30 minutes of wireless streaming. These are manufacturer estimates under specified test conditions, not a promise of runtime in ordinary use. HP also lists a 96 W USB-C adapter and says fast charging can reach approximately 50% in 30 minutes under its stated conditions. The cited independent review passages do not provide a directly comparable battery test with a clear protocol, so there is no basis here to say independent testing confirmed HP’s maximum. HP’s product sheet is the source for these figures.
Are the ports enough for your setup?
The Dragonfly Pro has three USB-C connections and no USB-A port or 3.5 mm headset jack. HP specifies that the two USB4 ports support up to 40 Gbps and are compatible with Thunderbolt 3; the third is USB 3.2 Type-C at up to 10 Gbps. HP lists charging and DisplayPort capabilities for the ports. HP’s specification sheet lists the port capabilities; Notebookcheck notes the missing USB-A port and audio jack.

A USB-C hub or dock is worth considering if you use USB-A peripherals, wired headphones, wired networking or a multi-display desk setup. Before choosing one, match its power delivery, data bandwidth and supported display resolution and refresh rate to your devices. A USB-C connector by itself does not guarantee that every dock supports every display arrangement.

HP lists a 5 MP infrared camera with privacy shutter, backlit keyboard, haptic trackpad, Bang & Olufsen audio, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. These features round out the laptop for calls, typing and wireless use without changing the main buying trade-off: a well-equipped everyday machine with a good, but not high-resolution, screen and a need for adapters if your setup depends on older ports. HP’s product specification sheet lists these features.
Should you buy the HP Dragonfly Pro?
The Windows HP Dragonfly Pro is worth considering if you want a compact 14-inch productivity laptop, Ryzen 7 performance, a touchscreen with full sRGB coverage and the option of 32 GB memory and 1 TB storage. It is a less natural fit if you require USB-A or a built-in headset jack, or if a sharper-than-1920×1200 display is important. Decide based on current pricing and whether the onboard configuration you choose will serve your needs for the life of the laptop.
