The HP DeskJet 2923e is a low-cost home all-in-one for light, occasional work: printing, scanning and copying a few documents a month. Its main trade-off is not really print quality. It is the recurring cost of ink and the modest page capacity. CHOICE Australia’s comparison gives it a 63% Expert Rating and names ink consumption as the biggest drawback, while praising its scanning and calling its printing “not too bad for the price”.

What the 2923e is and who HP designed it for

HP’s U.S. product listing calls the machine the HP DeskJet 2923 All-in-One. CHOICE Australia uses the “2923e” identifier in its comparison. Both describe the same family of entry-level home printers, but product codes, bundled cartridges and listings differ by country, so check the exact model name and regional part number on the box or the retailer page before you buy.

HP recommends a monthly print volume of 50 to 100 pages. That is the figure to plan around. The printer’s stated 1,000-page monthly duty cycle is a maximum that HP says is not recommended as an ongoing workload, so it should not be read as capacity for a busy office.

Key specifications

The table below uses manufacturer figures from HP’s U.S. product listing unless noted. Speeds are ISO ratings published by HP, not independently measured real-world speeds.

#1 Best Overall
Feature HP DeskJet 2923 All-in-One (HP listing)
Functions Print, copy, scan (flatbed only)
Rated speed (ISO) Up to 7.5 pages per minute black; 5.5 ppm colour
Recommended monthly volume 50 to 100 pages
Duty cycle 1,000 pages per month maximum, not recommended for ongoing use
Input tray One tray, 60 sheets
Output tray 25 sheets
Duplex (two-sided) printing Manual only
Borderless printing Not available
Automatic document feeder None
Fax None
Maximum scan size 8.5 x 11.69 inches (flatbed)
Supported media Letter, legal, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 8 x 10 inch, No. 10 envelopes
Connectivity Dual-band Wi-Fi and USB 2.0
Mobile and cloud printing HP app, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Android printing through HP Print Service Plugin

Two constraints shape the buying decision more than the speed figure does. The lack of an automatic document feeder means multi-page originals must be copied or scanned one page at a time on the glass. The missing borderless mode means photo prints will carry a white margin, which matters if you print 4 x 6 snapshots.

How it performs, according to CHOICE Australia

The figures in this section come from CHOICE Australia’s comparison page for the 2923e. CHOICE is an Australian consumer organisation, so the ratings and the running-cost estimate reflect Australian conditions and prices. The page does not show a publication date, and the visible text does not give enough methodology to turn its numbers into a general household estimate.

  • 63% CHOICE Expert Rating
  • 68% print, scan and copy score
  • AU$69 recommended retail price (RRP)
  • AU$365 per year estimated ink or toner cost

Printing

CHOICE says print quality “isn’t too bad for the price”. That is a value judgement rather than a claim that output matches more expensive machines, and it is the most that the comparison offers on print quality.

Scanning

Scanning is the strongest area in CHOICE’s assessment, which calls the printer “very good at scanning”. For a flatbed-only machine, that makes it a reasonable choice for digitising documents, receipts and photos one at a time.

Copying

Copying is the weakest function. CHOICE describes it as “as woeful as its older sibling”, so if copying is a regular task, treat this model as a poor fit.

Ink: the real cost of ownership

Ink is the largest drawback in CHOICE’s review. Its AU$365 estimated annual ink cost is about five times the machine’s AU$69 RRP. CHOICE also notes that the estimate is lower than for an older comparison model but still excessive. Treat the AU$365 figure as an estimate for the scenario CHOICE used, not a bill you will receive. Your actual spending will depend on how many pages you print, how much colour and photo coverage they contain, how often the printer runs cleaning cycles, and local cartridge prices.

Because the estimate is a year-based figure, the way to judge it is by volume. At the recommended 50 to 100 pages per month, you will buy cartridges regularly. Compare cartridge yields and local prices per page rather than the price of the printer.

Cartridges differ by region

The cartridge family is the most common source of confusion with this model. HP’s U.S. listing and its Ireland listing name different cartridge families, so a search for the product name alone will not reliably find the right ink.

Listing Replacement cartridges named Approximate yield stated by HP Setup cartridges included
HP U.S. product listing HP 68 black; HP 68 tri-color; HP 68e EvoMore black HP 68 black about 160 pages; HP 68 tri-color about 120 pages; HP 68e EvoMore black about 320 pages HP 68 setup cartridges
HP Ireland specification HP 308 black; HP 308 tri-color; HP 308e EvoMore black Not stated on the listing reviewed HP 308 setup cartridges

HP describes its yields as approximate. Actual yield varies with the content of each page and other factors, so use the figures to compare cartridges, not to predict exactly how many pages you will print.

Before you order cartridges

  1. Confirm the exact model name and regional part number on the printer or its packaging.
  2. Check HP’s compatibility listing for that model and select the cartridge family it names.
  3. Compare the black-only and tri-colour options by price per page, using the stated yields and the colour use you expect.

Third-party and refilled cartridges

HP says the printer uses dynamic security to block cartridges with modified or non-HP circuitry, and that firmware updates can keep those measures effective. HP also says reused HP circuitry allows reused, remanufactured and refilled cartridges. The practical point is that compatibility depends on the chip inside the cartridge, not simply on whether it is made by HP. Do not assume every non-HP cartridge will work, and check the cartridge’s circuitry before buying. Firmware updates may also change which cartridges work, so it is worth reading the update notes if a cartridge that worked before stops being recognised.

Setup and connection

Wireless is the expected setup route, and the printer supports dual-band Wi-Fi along with the HP app, AirPrint, Mopria and Android printing through HP Print Service Plugin. A USB 2.0 port is also available for wired use. HP confirms that a USB cable is not included, so you will need to supply one only if you choose a wired connection.

Who should buy the HP DeskJet 2923e

The 2923e suits a home user who prints a few pages a month, scans documents occasionally, and does not need to copy regularly. It is a sensible choice if the purchase price matters more to you than the lifetime cost of ink, and if you can work within its single 60-sheet tray and manual duplex.

It is a poor match for several situations:

  • Regular copying, where CHOICE rates the function as poor.
  • Multi-page scanning or copying, because there is no document feeder.
  • Borderless photo prints, which the printer cannot produce.
  • Frequent printing above the 50 to 100 pages per month HP recommends.
  • Any situation where you expect to buy ink at the rate CHOICE’s estimate implies.

If you need any of those things, compare the printer against alternatives using the same checklist: total ink cost at your monthly volume, cartridge yield and regional compatibility, copy quality, duplex type, input capacity, borderless support and the presence of an automatic document feeder. The available evidence does not establish how the 2923e ranks against specific competing models, so that comparison is one to make with current listings in your country.

Practical tip: if you do print photos, a 4 x 6 inch inkjet photo paper will work with the printer’s supported media, but expect a white border because borderless printing is unavailable.

Overall, the HP DeskJet 2923e is a modest, inexpensive all-in-one. Its scanning is its strongest function, its print quality is acceptable for the price, and its copying is weak. Whether it is good value depends mainly on how much you print and how much you are willing to spend on replacement cartridges over the life of the machine.
