The HP DeskJet 2820e is a compact entry-level all-in-one for occasional home printing, copying, and scanning. It makes the most sense when you print modest volumes and value basic functionality over speed or advanced paper handling. Its low-cost class comes with an important catch: independent review coverage flags slow color printing and high running costs as reasons frequent printers should look elsewhere.
Is the HP DeskJet 2820e good for home use?
For a household that prints a few documents or photos now and then, the 2820e covers the essentials without taking up much space. It prints, copies, and scans, connects by Wi-Fi or USB on the reviewed 588K9B regional version, and supports mobile printing options listed by HP, including Apple AirPrint and Mopria. The 588K9B product overview lists a 60-sheet input tray and plain and photo paper support. Confirm local compatibility and setup guidance for your country and operating system on HP’s product overview.
The feature set is deliberately basic. HP’s regional 588K9B specification lists manual duplex printing, so you must turn pages yourself to print on both sides; it has no automatic document feeder, fax, or borderless printing. That makes it less convenient for multi-page scanning, unattended double-sided jobs, or photos that need to print to the edge of the paper. The same listing recommends a monthly volume of 50–100 pages. HP’s stated maximum duty cycle of up to 1,000 pages per month is a ceiling, not a recommended ongoing workload. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent speed or durability test results.
How fast does it print, and what does independent testing say?
For the 588K9B version, HP rates print speed at up to 7.5 ISO pages per minute in black and 5.5 in color on A4 paper. These are HP’s rated figures, not a guarantee of the speed you will see with every document, connection, or print setting. The manufacturer’s recommended 50–100-page monthly volume is a more useful guide to the intended workload than the much higher maximum duty-cycle figure.

In a review published March 3, 2024, COMPUTER BILD tested model 588K9B and awarded it a grade of 3.9, described as “adequate.” The publication praised print quality, fast text printing, and low power use, while identifying color speed and running cost as weaknesses for frequent printing. That supports a use-case distinction: occasional text jobs are a better fit than regular batches of color pages. The grade and observations are COMPUTER BILD’s, not results from our own testing. Read its DeskJet 2820e review for its assessment.
Is the HP DeskJet 2820e expensive to run?
It can be a costly choice if you print often, especially in color. COMPUTER BILD’s 2024 review specifically cites high running costs as a drawback for frequent printing. The evidence does not establish a universal cost per page: that depends on local cartridge prices, the amount of ink used by each page, and the cartridge family sold for your regional printer version.

For the 588K9B SKU, HP lists approximate yields of 120 pages from a standard black HP 305 cartridge and 100 pages from a standard tri-color HP 305 cartridge. The 305XL versions are listed at approximately 240 black pages and 200 tri-color pages. For the 588L1A SKU, HP lists the same approximate yields for standard and XL cartridges in the HP 67 family. HP cautions that actual yield varies considerably with content and other factors, so these figures are estimates rather than guaranteed page counts. Check HP’s 588K9B specifications or HP’s 588L1A specifications for the relevant listing.

Which ink does the HP DeskJet 2820e use?
It depends on the regional product number. The DeskJet 2820e name alone is not enough to identify the correct cartridge:
| Printer product number | HP-listed cartridge family | Regional listing |
|---|---|---|
| 588K9B | HP 305 or 305XL | HP Sri Lanka specifications |
| 588L1A | HP 67 or 67XL | HP Philippines specifications |
Before ordering, find the printer’s product number on its label or packaging and match it to the local HP supply listing. Do not assume that a cartridge family listed for another country or SKU will fit your unit.

HP says its dynamic security may block cartridges that use modified or non-HP circuitry, and that firmware updates can maintain these measures. HP also says reused HP circuitry can enable reused, remanufactured, and refilled cartridges. In practice, compatibility depends on the cartridge circuitry and the printer’s state; third-party or remanufactured ink is not guaranteed to work in every case. HP’s explanation is on its product page.
Who should buy it—and who should skip it?
- Consider it if you want a basic printer, copier, and scanner for occasional home use and your expected volume is near HP’s recommended 50–100 pages per month for the 588K9B listing.
- Look elsewhere if you regularly print color pages, need faster color output, or want to keep ink costs low across frequent jobs.
- Choose a different feature set if you need automatic two-sided printing, an automatic document feeder, fax, or borderless photo output; those features are not listed for the reviewed regional specification.
- Check before buying if you rely on third-party ink or are ordering replacement cartridges: verify the product number and local cartridge compatibility rather than relying on the 2820e name alone.
HP lists a one-year limited hardware warranty for the 588K9B regional page; warranty coverage and support differ by country and local requirements. Check the terms applying where you buy the printer.
