During the first COVID-19 lockdowns, Zoom, Netflix, and Dropbox kept their services available by planning for surging demand and spreading capacity across cloud services, data centers, and network infrastructure. Their approaches differed: Zoom rapidly added meeting capacity, Netflix combined AWS with its own content-delivery network, and Dropbox focused on continuity planning, capacity reserves, and cloud fallback options.
How did the three companies handle the traffic surge?
Their shared challenge was not simply that more people went online. They needed to add capacity quickly, deliver traffic through distributed systems, and keep operations functioning despite constraints such as physical equipment supply and data-center lead times.
| Company | Where capacity lived | How traffic reached users | How capacity and continuity were managed | Constraint or adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoom | Colocated facilities plus public cloud; Zoom described its cloud data centers as predominantly AWS. | Meetings were routed through an appropriate meeting zone; paid customers could opt in or out of specific data-center regions for meeting traffic. | Rapidly added server capacity, including EC2 instances, as demand rose. | Capacity had to be added quickly as demand accelerated. |
| Netflix | Mostly AWS, alongside Netflix’s own CDN, according to Data Center Knowledge’s March 2020 report. | Its CDN placed delivery infrastructure close to internet service providers and users; traffic also relied on network interconnection. | Moved holiday-season growth plans forward and adjusted traffic management during European peak periods. | A short-term server-supply problem affected plans to add equipment at ISP locations; streaming quality was reduced at peak times in Europe. |
| Dropbox | Staffed data centers and its own storage services, with public-cloud fallback options prepared. | Its continuity statement emphasized keeping infrastructure and support operating normally, rather than describing a specific traffic-routing change. | Used business-continuity processes, demand forecasts, inventory planning, and reserved capacity. | Planned for short-term capacity risks and the possibility of moving selected services to public cloud. |
How Zoom expanded meeting capacity
Colocated data centers and public cloud
In an April 3, 2020 statement, Zoom said it had “added server capacity and deployed it quickly,” beginning in China. The company described a global architecture with 17 colocated data centers as well as public-cloud data centers, predominantly AWS. That hybrid approach combined facilities Zoom had arranged directly with the ability to add cloud compute capacity.

Amazon Web Services reported that Zoom grew from 10 million daily meeting participants in December 2019 to more than 300 million daily participants regularly since April 2020. AWS also said engineering teams added tens of thousands of Amazon EC2 instances, sometimes thousands in a single day. Those figures are AWS’s account of Zoom’s growth and infrastructure response, not a general measure of how many individual customers or accounts Zoom had.

Routing meeting traffic by region
Zoom said its normal design routed meetings through an appropriate meeting zone. On April 13, 2020, it announced controls allowing paid customers to opt in or out of specific data-center regions for meeting traffic. This gave eligible customers a regional choice within Zoom’s distributed infrastructure; it did not mean every meeting automatically used a customer-selected region.
How Netflix scaled streaming while managing network demand
AWS for computing, Netflix’s CDN for delivery
Netflix’s model paired cloud infrastructure with its own content-delivery network (CDN). Data Center Knowledge reported in March 2020 that the service ran mostly on AWS while operating its own CDN. The cloud provided computing capacity; the CDN helped deliver video from infrastructure positioned within or near internet service provider networks.

Dave Temkin, then Netflix’s vice president of network and systems infrastructure, said the company had “pulled forward” growth plans originally intended for the holiday season. The compressed timeline exposed a physical supply constraint: the company encountered a short-term problem obtaining servers for ISP locations and switched manufacturing location. Cloud elasticity could help with computing demand, but it did not remove the time and supply limits involved in producing and placing physical equipment.

Traffic management also mattered beyond Netflix’s own systems. The OECD reported that Netflix, Akamai, and YouTube agreed to reduce streaming quality at peak times in Europe during the emergency. This was a measure to ease network pressure, not evidence that Netflix’s core service had stopped scaling.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The scale of the wider network increase helps explain the measure: the OECD reported net bandwidth increases of up to 60% per country at internet exchange points from December to March in 2020. That figure describes increases reported at exchange points, not a uniform rise in every country’s total internet traffic.
How Dropbox prepared its infrastructure and operations
Business continuity and demand planning
Dropbox’s March 17, 2020 continuity statement said it expected infrastructure and support to run normally and expressed confidence in providing uninterrupted service. It cited ISO 22301 business-continuity processes, staffed data centers, updated forecasts, and preparation for higher-growth and higher-demand scenarios. These measures addressed operational readiness as well as the ability to serve users.

Dropbox also said it used Dropbox, Paper, Zoom, and Slack internally, while relying mainly on software-as-a-service (SaaS) to limit dependence on its VPN. That was part of its own continuity setup, rather than a claim that these tools alone provided its infrastructure resilience.
Reserves and public-cloud fallback
In a one-year engineering retrospective, Dropbox described longer-term planning changes: updated inventory policies and planning parameters intended to leave free capacity in Magic Pocket and Edgestore, its storage systems. It also prepared a list of services that could move to public cloud quickly and cost-efficiently if short-term capacity risks emerged. These were contingency measures; the retrospective does not establish that Dropbox had to move those services during the initial lockdown surge.

What the responses reveal about staying online
The companies’ strategies show why resilience depended on more than adding servers. Zoom’s response emphasized rapid cloud and colocated capacity expansion; Netflix combined cloud computing with delivery infrastructure near network edges and adjusted peak traffic; Dropbox emphasized continuity processes, forecasts, inventory, and reserve capacity. Across all three, the ability to plan and operate distributed systems mattered, while access to physical servers remained a constraint even when cloud services were available.
