zline is a pure-Zsh prompt engine designed to keep prompt rendering fast by avoiding subshell forks on its synchronous path and moving richer Git-status work into a background worker. Its project-published benchmark reports a 0.66 ms Powerline render and a 0.52 ms Lean render—but those are the project’s results on Apple Silicon with Zsh 5.9, not independently reproduced measurements.
What zline does—and what the 0.6 ms figure means
zline is Cason Adams’s pure-Zsh prompt engine, presented by its repository as a streamlined replacement for Powerlevel10k. It provides prompt presets, built-in segments, declarative array configuration, and a Base16/Term16 color approach. The project says it supports Zsh 5.8 and later on macOS, Linux, BSDs, Alpine/musl, and Termux. These are compatibility claims made by the project, not results of a separate platform-by-platform test. The headline’s “0.6ms” is a rounded description, not one universal measurement. In its benchmark table, the project reports a 0.66 ms synchronous Powerline render and a 0.52 ms synchronous Lean render. Both figures come from 1,000 iterations on Apple Silicon arm64 with Zsh 5.9. They are published project benchmarks, not independent tests, and should not be assumed to describe other machines, terminals, prompt configurations, or repositories.

A prompt is evaluated as part of the interactive shell experience, so work that must finish before the next command line appears can affect how responsive the shell feels. zline’s design goal is to avoid launching subshells on that immediate rendering path. Adams describes using Zsh parameter expansion and built-in operations for tasks such as path and string handling, rather than relying on command substitutions or external text-processing utilities for those operations. This is the author’s account of the implementation; the repository describes the same general no-subshell synchronous-rendering goal.

That does not mean the prompt avoids all computation or that Git work disappears. The design separates work by urgency: information needed immediately is handled synchronously, while more involved status collection can happen without blocking the prompt’s first render.
How zline handles Git without blocking the prompt
The project describes a two-stage Git approach. It reads the repository’s .git/HEAD to identify the current branch synchronously, then delegates richer status checks to a non-blocking background worker. That later work can cover dirty and untracked files and ahead/behind information.

This trade-off prioritizes a quick initial prompt over having every Git detail ready at precisely the same instant. The repository characterizes the worker as asynchronous; the available project material does not establish a universal update delay or performance result for large or unusually slow repositories. Git status is still part of the system—its more expensive work is moved off the immediate rendering path.
Configuration is prepared before each prompt render
Adams describes zline as parsing and compiling configuration during initialization, then dispatching the selected segments from arrays when rendering. The intent is to avoid repeatedly interpreting the configuration on every prompt redraw. The account also discusses optional compilation to a .zwc file with Zsh’s zcompile. These are descriptions of the project’s design, rather than an independently audited performance analysis.

For users, the configuration model is worth evaluating separately from the timing claim. Declarative arrays and presets may suit someone who wants a Zsh-native setup; migrating a heavily customized prompt can still require translating its segments, colors, and behavior.
What the published benchmark covers
The repository reports five measurements. Each is a project-published result accessed in 2026, measured on macOS Apple Silicon arm64 with Zsh 5.9. The iteration count differs for the instant-prompt load; none of the figures is an independent comparison against another prompt engine.

The repository includes a command for running its benchmark locally: zsh benchmark/bench.zsh. Reproducing that run on your own setup can help you understand results for your machine, but a meaningful comparison with another prompt would need to use the same machine, shell version, repository state, configuration, and measurement method. The published figures alone do not establish that zline is faster than Starship or Powerlevel10k under controlled, equivalent conditions.
Terminal integration depends on the emulator
zline’s described terminal features include OSC 133 shell integration, OSC 7 working-directory reporting, OSC 8 hyperlinks, and transient prompts. The project README lists modern terminal protocols and transient-prompt support. Whether a feature behaves as intended depends on the terminal emulator and its configuration; the project feature list is not proof of universal support across terminals.

ZLE, the Zsh Line Editor, is Zsh’s interactive command-line editing interface. Its official documentation provides context for shell-line editing and event handling, but it does not independently validate zline’s speed claims. Zsh Line Editor documentation
How to install zline
The repository documents both a plugin-manager route using zload and a manual setup. For the manual route, clone the project into ~/.zline, source its Zsh file from .zshrc, choose a preset, and initialize it:
- Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/casonadams/zline.git ~/.zline. - Add
source ~/.zline/zline.zshto your~/.zshrc. - Select a prompt preset in your configuration.
- Run
zline initas documented by the project. - Start a new Zsh session or reload your configuration to use the prompt.

Consider more than the fastest number in a benchmark. The practical choice depends on the shell and systems you use, the cost of migrating your current configuration, how you want Git status to appear, and whether your terminal supports the protocols you plan to enable.
