Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil stands out by adapting the experience of playing survival horror rather than retelling a familiar game plot. Its story follows a new protagonist through the world of Resident Evil 2, using scarce supplies, escalating threats, and a vulnerable everyman perspective to evoke the games. The clearest comparison is with earlier Resident Evil films—not with every video-game adaptation.

How does it adapt the games without retelling them?
In an interview published April 30, 2026, on PlayStation Blog, Cregger said he wanted a story that could happen in the franchise’s world without repeating a story the games had already told. He situated the film broadly in the world of Resident Evil 2, during the Raccoon City crisis, but follows a different person on a mission. He also allowed for some changes for dramatic effect.

That choice avoids making the film a screen version of Leon’s familiar storyline. Cregger said he felt the games had already told Leon’s story well. Instead, the film keeps the setting and recognizable rules while building a new plot around Bryan. GameSpot’s May 1, 2026 report similarly summarized Cregger’s decision to avoid established game characters and stories while retaining the setting, journey structure, mechanics, and Easter eggs.

How does the film translate the experience of playing?
Cregger’s approach carries over design principles from survival-horror games rather than reproducing a specific sequence. He described a point-A-to-point-B journey through changing environments, with threats increasing along the way. Scarce ammunition and healing supplies, injury, weapon progression, and small game-specific details all help make that journey feel connected to the games.
Resource pressure drives suspense
The protagonist’s limited bullets and healing items make each encounter a problem of survival, not just a chance for action. Cregger described the dread of entering a new space with very little ammunition as central to the effect. The film also carries over details associated with healing items and includes visual and thematic Easter eggs.

- In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.
Bryan is a vulnerable newcomer
Bryan is an ordinary person rather than an established combat specialist. Cregger said he wanted the character to suggest how an average player might react when thrown into the nightmare. The Atlantic’s September 2026 feature reports that Bryan makes rookie errors as he faces the risks and absurdities of a game-like environment. That perspective places the audience closer to a player under pressure than to an already-capable action hero; it is an interpretation of the reported scenes and creative intent, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond. Weapons mark a progression
Cregger specifically named a progression from pistol to shotgun to MP5. The shift gives the character new options as the journey escalates, while the scarcity of ammunition keeps greater firepower from making the danger disappear.

- A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.
How does it differ from earlier Resident Evil films?
The Atlantic describes seven earlier Resident Evil films as more action-heavy, highlighting automatic weapons, supernatural abilities, vehicle stunts, and large volumes of gunfire against zombie waves. It contrasts that spectacle with Cregger’s ordinary-person perspective and resource-conscious survival setup.
The distinction is best understood as a contrast within this franchise: earlier films, as The Atlantic characterizes them, emphasize action spectacle, while Cregger’s film leans toward the vulnerability and scarcity associated with playing survival horror. The evidence supports that comparison with the earlier Resident Evil movies; it does not establish that Cregger’s strategy differs from every other video-game adaptation.

- Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield reunite to investigate the connection between two zombie outbreaks in distant countries and uncover a threat that will shake the nation to its very core.
What is the core difference in Cregger’s approach?
Cregger changes the plot and protagonist but keeps the mechanics, atmosphere, and details that make the games recognizable. Rather than follow an established hero through a familiar storyline, the film asks what it might feel like for an ordinary person to navigate a dangerous world with limited supplies. Its adaptation strategy is therefore less about reproducing a game’s events and more about recreating the pressure of playing one.
