X’s public documentation explains how media is uploaded, referenced by the platform and attached to posts—but it does not reveal the physical systems that store the files. A media ID, API field or image URL is an application-level reference, not proof of a particular storage provider, data center or delivery network. Here’s what is documented for photos, GIFs, videos and Spaces, and where the available details stop.

What “storage” means on X

When someone asks where an X photo or video is stored, “where” can mean three different things:

  • The file itself: the bytes for the image, animation or video, and the systems that keep them.
  • The platform reference: the media entity, identifier or URL that X associates with the content.
  • The experience in the app: how an attachment appears in a post, or how a Space is retrieved or played.

X’s public API documentation and Help Center describe parts of the second and third layers, as well as some upload steps. They do not identify X’s storage vendor or data-center locations, nor do they publish details about replication, transcoding infrastructure, caching or CDN topology, or retention policies. A URL or media ID therefore tells you how software refers to media; it does not tell you which physical system holds it.

How each type of media appears in X’s public model

Media What the public documentation describes What it does not establish about storage
Photos The X API data dictionary treats media as post-associated entity data and includes media URL fields. The Help Center describes attaching existing or newly captured photos in the post composer. Physical storage location, storage provider and full delivery architecture are not stated in X’s API data dictionary or Help Center.
Animated GIFs GIFs can be attached through the composer. X’s troubleshooting documentation says a single Post can have only one animated GIF. Whether X retains the uploaded GIF unchanged or converts it to another representation is not stated in X’s troubleshooting documentation.
Videos The Help Center describes recording, importing and uploading video. A 2015 developer announcement documents a chunked-upload example followed by attaching a media ID to a post. Current private storage, processing and delivery architecture are not stated in X’s Help Center or historical developer announcement.
Spaces X’s API tools document an endpoint for retrieving Spaces by ID. Where live audio or recordings are stored, how long recordings persist, and what playback or retention systems are used are not stated in the Spaces API documentation.

Photos and GIFs

For photos, X’s API data dictionary shows how media can be represented as data associated with a post, including URL fields. The Help Center describes attaching a photo from the device or capturing one for a post; it also notes that some single photos with standard aspect ratios display in full. Those details explain what a user can attach and what an API client may receive—not the physical location of the image bytes.

GIFs are also composer attachments. X’s troubleshooting page specifies a limit of one animated GIF per Post. Its public documentation does not say whether the original uploaded file remains unchanged or whether X creates a different internal or playback version.

Videos and account-specific upload limits

X’s Help Center, accessed October 2, 2026, lists different user-facing video specifications by account tier. It says Premium subscribers can upload videos shorter than four hours, with a maximum file size of 16 GB; for videos longer than two hours and shorter than four hours, the page specifies 720p. It says non-Premium users can upload videos up to 140 seconds long and 512 MB. These are Help Center posting specifications, not disclosures about storage capacity or backend design, and they may change.

Media Studio is a separate product surface with separate specifications. X’s Media Studio documentation lists an 8 GB maximum video upload size and supported formats including MP4 and MOV. It says videos uploaded or attached through the desktop or mobile X apps appear in the Media Studio Library, where images, GIFs and videos associated with an account can be viewed and managed. X cautions that the specifications on that page apply only to Media Studio; they should not be treated as the rules for developer API, Pro Media API, or ordinary desktop and mobile uploads.

Spaces

The “Get Spaces by IDs” endpoint in X’s API tools establishes that a Space can be represented and retrieved as an API object. It does not establish that Space audio follows the same upload, attachment or storage path as a video posted to a timeline. The public sources described here do not specify where live Space audio or any recording is stored, whether recordings persist, or how long they remain available.

How an upload becomes a post attachment

The useful high-level model is that a client sends media through an X-supported upload route, X associates the asset with a media identifier or entity, and a post refers to that media. The client can then display the attachment. The exact mechanics depend on the route and its applicable documentation; a media reference is not itself a map of the storage infrastructure.

A 2015 X developer announcement illustrates this separation with a chunked video-upload flow:

  1. INIT: begin an upload and establish an upload session.
  2. APPEND: send the video in segments.
  3. FINALIZE: finish the upload so the media can be processed.
  4. Attach the media ID: use the resulting identifier when creating a post.

This is a historical protocol example, not a complete description of today’s upload APIs or a universal current workflow. The old statuses/update_with_media endpoint is marked deprecated and directs developers to the media-upload guidance and a separate post-creation or update step. That legacy endpoint accepted one picture and did not support multi-image posts, GIFs or video; it illustrates why uploading media and attaching it to a post are distinct operations, not the limits of current X posting.

What the published limits do—and do not—tell you

Upload limits describe what a particular route and account tier permit, not how much total media X stores or how it stores it. In particular, the developer announcement from 2015 included a 15 MB maximum and a 30-second duration. Those were launch-era figures and should not be used as current upload rules.

X’s public materials do not provide an authoritative total for its media storage, video volume, storage capacity, compression ratio, CDN footprint or media replication. They also do not publish a Spaces-audio retention period in the sources described above. Without those disclosures, a precise estimate of X’s storage architecture would be speculation.
