It depends on the round. In the first round, a Game 3 loss ends a team’s best-of-three series and eliminates it. In the semifinals or Finals, a team that loses Game 3 is still alive; if the series was tied 1-1, it trails 2-1 and must win enough remaining games to reach the round’s winning total.
How do WNBA playoff series work?
For the 2026 postseason, the top eight teams qualify regardless of conference and are seeded by regular-season record. The playoffs have three rounds, and a series ends as soon as one team reaches the number of wins required for that round.

The home-court patterns are 1-1-1 in the first round, 2-2-1 in the semifinals, and 2-2-1-1-1 in the Finals. The league adopted the first-round order and best-of-seven Finals starting in 2025; older format descriptions may reflect previous rules. Does losing Game 3 eliminate a WNBA team?
Only in the first round. This comparison assumes the teams were tied 1-1 before Game 3:

“Game 3” can mean the deciding game of a first-round matchup, but it is also simply the third game in a longer series. The key is the number of wins required: two in the first round, three in the semifinals, and four in the Finals. A team that loses Game 3 after a 1-1 start has lost its chance only when that round’s format leaves no games to play.
