William “VE4VR” Franzin connected a D-STAR VHF repeater to ChatGPT through an internet-connected server. An operator speaks over the radio; the server converts the digital voice to audio, transcribes it, sends the text to ChatGPT, turns the response into speech, and routes it back to the radio. The 2023 demonstration showed a working proof of concept, not a ready-made commercial product.
How the D-STAR-to-ChatGPT connection works
The system bridges two different kinds of communication: D-STAR digital voice over amateur radio and cloud-based speech and language processing. Its path runs from the transmitting radio to a repeater, across the internet to a server, and back over the radio after ChatGPT responds.
- Ask over the radio. The operator transmits a spoken question using D-STAR digital voice on VHF.
- Send the transmission to the server. A D-STAR repeater and gateway carry the received transmission over the internet to Franzin’s server.
- Convert the digital voice. A Northwest Digital Radio ThumbDV AMBE transcoder on the server converts the D-STAR voice stream into ordinary digital audio.
- Transcribe and process the question. A speech-recognition engine turns the audio into text, which is sent to ChatGPT.
- Speak the response back. Text-to-speech generates spoken audio; the system transcodes it for the digital-voice path and returns it through the repeater to the radio.
Franzin described the chain to Hackster.io in 2023, including the D-STAR VHF repeater, internet-connected server, ThumbDV AMBE interface, speech-to-text, ChatGPT, and return transmission.
What Franzin demonstrated
In the reported demonstration, Franzin keyed his transmitter and asked how to obtain an amateur-radio licence. ChatGPT’s answer was converted to speech and played back over the radio. Hackaday’s January 28, 2023 report also describes this exchange.

The example illustrates the interface rather than establishing how well it handles a wide range of questions. The published reports do not provide latency measurements, speech-recognition accuracy tests, uptime figures, range results, or a cost estimate.
Hardware, software, and what is not documented
The described setup depends on a D-STAR-capable radio and repeater path, internet access, a server, a ThumbDV AMBE transcoder, speech recognition, ChatGPT, and text-to-speech. The reports do not supply a complete bill of materials or enough configuration detail to reproduce the system precisely.

Hackster.io reported that Franzin had not released the source code at the time of its February 1, 2023 article. That means the coverage documents the architecture and demonstration, but does not establish a public software package or turnkey build.
Why the project fits Franzin’s broader work
The concept extends voice control into an amateur-radio setting: rather than only controlling radio equipment with voice commands, the system lets an operator ask a conversational AI a spoken question and hear its response through a radio link. The official Hamvention 2023 program lists Franzin as moderator of “Voice Control of Amateur Radio Systems & AI Voice Assistants,” a session about applying voice control to existing systems.

Franzin’s demonstration establishes one architecture, not a universal recipe. A similar project would need decisions about the radio network, audio conversion, processing location, and safe operating procedure.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- MENUS THAT MAKE SENSE. 1,000 MEMORIES. 10 NAMED ZONES. Built for amateur operators who want organized analog control. Use clear English menus and the full keypad for common changes; group home, travel, club, event, simplex, and receive channels as your plan grows.
- SCAN THE ZONES THAT MATTER. Choose which named zones scan together. Temporarily skip a busy channel without changing your saved scan list. Scanning is for conventional analog channels; it does not decode DMR/digital or trunked systems.
- MORE INFORMATION AT A GLANCE. Choose Name + Frequency in the two-channel view. Dual Watch alternates one receiver between the two displayed channels. Turn Dual Watch off and enable Single Watch for a full-screen view of one channel's name, zone, and frequency. Approximate dBm adds signal context.
- START ON THE RADIO. BUILD LARGER PLANS ON A COMPUTER. Make common changes from the keypad. For larger plans, use BTECH CPS or supported CHIRP-next with the separately sold PC03. Firmware updates require BTECH CPS, the PC03, and BTECH's matching instructions. USB-C charges the battery.
