Wildlife tracking can show whether individual animals alter routes, stopover sites, travel speed or use of areas near turbines. Those changes demonstrate a behavioral response in the animals and landscape studied. They do not, by themselves, prove that migration has been blocked or that a population is declining.

A defensible assessment combines movement data with turbine locations, collision-fatality estimates, survival and reproduction measures, abundance or range data, and population models. The result is a layered answer: tracking identifies what animals do, while demographic evidence indicates whether that behavior matters for a population.

What tracking can—and cannot—show

GPS collars, radio telemetry, satellite tags and other location systems record where a tagged animal is over time. By aligning those positions with turbine coordinates and project timelines, researchers can test several concrete outcomes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Route displacement: an animal takes a different path after turbines are built or when it approaches a facility.
  • Area avoidance: the probability of using turbine-adjacent habitat falls relative to comparable areas farther away.
  • Stopover changes: animals select different resting or feeding sites during migration.
  • Speed changes: movement accelerates or slows near turbines, potentially indicating hesitation, disturbance or a need to cross exposed terrain quickly.
  • Route fidelity: individuals become less likely to reuse a traditional corridor near construction or operation.

These are measurements of movement behavior. A changed route could be harmless if suitable habitat remains available, or consequential if it forces animals into poorer forage, longer journeys or dangerous crossings. Tracking alone does not measure those downstream effects, nor does it estimate collisions unless the study is specifically designed to detect fatalities.

How a tracking study tests turbine effects

Define the comparison before collecting locations

The strongest designs compare movement under different turbine exposure conditions. A before-and-after comparison follows animals before construction and during operation. A comparison-site design contrasts a facility area with a similar corridor lacking turbines. Some studies use both approaches, while statistical models account for weather, habitat, season, age, sex and individual differences.

Researchers map each position against turbine buffers, construction dates and habitat features. They can then estimate how the probability of selecting a stopover changes with distance from a turbine, or whether travel speed differs inside and outside a facility. Seasonal migration must be separated from resident movements; otherwise a short local trip can be mistaken for a migration response.

Match the tag and sampling schedule to the question

GPS collars provide repeated coordinates suitable for route geometry, stopover duration and speed. Radio or satellite telemetry can extend coverage where GPS devices are impractical, although location frequency and precision vary. A tag that records one position per day may miss a short detour around a turbine, while very frequent fixes can shorten battery life or increase device weight. The study must report the number of animals, years, sites and fixes so readers know what the sample represents.

Measure exposure at several scales

An animal may pass through a broad wind-energy region while avoiding individual turbines, or it may use a facility but abandon one critical valley. Analyses should therefore examine the individual turbine, facility, migration corridor and wider range separately. Scale determines the inference: a response at one turbine is not evidence of a regional migration barrier.

What the Wyoming pronghorn example shows

A USGS summary of a south-central Wyoming study describes female pronghorn fitted with GPS collars during 2010–2012 and 2018–2020. Researchers analyzed 286 migration sequences from 117 individuals: 121 spring migrations, 123 fall migrations and 42 facultative winter migrations.

The pronghorn continued migrating through wind-energy facilities. At the same time, models detected changes in stopover selection, distance from turbines, movement speed near turbines and fidelity to routes near turbines under construction. “Continued migration” therefore does not mean “no effect”; it means the animals crossed the facilities while altering aspects of how they moved or where they paused.

In the study’s models, increasing distance from a turbine from 0 to 1 kilometer corresponded to a 33% increase in the relative probability of spring stopover selection and a 300% increase in the relative probability of winter stopover selection. These are relative, study-specific model results for pronghorn in this Wyoming setting. They are not universal effect sizes for every species, season or wind project.

Bat observations answer a different question

A separate USGS study used video at one Colorado turbine for a year. Cameras detected bats on 177 of 306 nights, recording approximately 3,800 hours of video and more than 2,000 discrete bat events. Activity peaked seasonally in July and September, and bats repeatedly approached the turbine.

The authors described the observed patterns as consistent with possible investigative behavior, while noting that the causes of seasonal activity and movement required further study. This was turbine-adjacent behavioral observation, not a GPS study showing that bats rerouted an entire migration. It is useful for identifying when and how bats interact with a turbine, but it cannot establish a population-level effect from one site.

The USGS summary states: “In northern temperate zones, fatalities occur mostly from July through October, but whether this reflects seasonally variable behaviors, passage of migrants, or some combination of factors remains unknown.” Seasonal timing is therefore a risk clue, not proof of a single causal mechanism.

Tracking versus collision monitoring

Carcass searches, acoustic monitoring and other post-construction methods estimate deaths; telemetry and video reveal movement or behavior. They answer related but distinct questions.

Evidence type What it measures What it cannot establish alone
GPS, radio or satellite tracking Routes, stopovers, speed, distance from turbines and route fidelity over time How many animals die, or whether a population declines
Video or camera observation Approaches, flight behavior and activity timing near a turbine Regional migration displacement or demographic consequences
Carcass and fatality monitoring Deaths, species composition and seasonal collision patterns Whether survivors changed routes or avoided habitat
Population and demographic models Potential effects on survival, reproduction, abundance and trajectories The exact behavior of every individual at every turbine

A synthesis of 114 post-construction monitoring studies found seasonal bird and bat fatality patterns that differed among species and bird guilds. Another synthesis covered 218 North American studies at 100 wind-energy facilities and found that fatalities were concentrated among migratory tree-roosting bat species, mostly from July through October in the data analyzed. Both syntheses called for broader, more standardized monitoring and more representative facility sampling.

When does a behavioral response become a population concern?

Researchers need a chain of evidence rather than a single movement statistic:

  1. Detect the response: show a route, stopover, speed or proximity change associated with turbine exposure.
  2. Measure the functional consequence: determine whether the altered route removes access to key forage, water, shelter or reproductive habitat, or adds meaningful travel costs.
  3. Estimate survival and reproduction: test whether exposed animals die more often, produce fewer young or fail to reach breeding areas.
  4. Scale the result: combine individual effects with the number of animals exposed, facility distribution, species range and cumulative development.
  5. Model uncertainty: present alternative assumptions and confidence limits rather than a single apparently precise population forecast.

The USGS methodology for assessing national and regional wind-energy effects combines fatality information, population estimates, species ranges, turbine locations, biological traits and population models. It explicitly warns that sparse or unreliable inputs and simplifying assumptions can limit the resulting estimates. A tracking result should therefore be reported with its sample size, geographic area, years, tag coverage and analytical assumptions.

How to read claims about “avoidance”

“Avoidance” can mean several things. A statistical model may show a lower probability of selecting a location close to turbines; an individual may visibly turn away; or a population may abandon a corridor. These are not interchangeable findings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Individual avoidance: a tagged animal changes its path or does not enter a buffer.
  • Habitat displacement: animals use less of an area, even if they still migrate through the broader region.
  • Barrier behavior: animals stop, detour around a facility or fail to cross it.
  • Population impact: survival, reproduction or abundance changes after exposure.

A study should also distinguish construction from operation. Noise, vehicles and disturbed ground may affect movements during building, while turbine blades, lighting and permanent roads create a different exposure after commissioning. Results from one phase should not automatically be applied to another.

Limits that can change the conclusion

Selected animals are not the whole population

Tagging usually covers a subset of individuals that can be captured safely and carry a device. Their age, sex, condition or migration strategy may differ from untagged animals. The Wyoming sample, for example, consisted of female pronghorn in a specific region and period. A finding about those animals should not be generalized to males, other herds or another continent without supporting data.

Short windows can miss long-term adaptation

A two-year observation may capture construction disturbance but not later route adjustment, habitat degradation or cumulative facilities. Conversely, a single season with unusual weather may exaggerate or hide a response. Multi-year sampling and repeated migration sequences make seasonal and annual variation easier to separate from a turbine effect.

Location errors and missing fixes matter

Telemetry positions have uncertainty, and terrain or weather can create gaps. If a position is less precise than the turbine buffer being analyzed, apparent proximity may be an artifact. Analysts should report positional accuracy, fix intervals, missing-data handling and whether animals with incomplete tracks were excluded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correlation is not automatically causation

Turbines are often built in open, windy landscapes that may already differ from undisturbed habitat. A route shift could reflect drought, forage changes, a new road, predators or weather rather than turbines. Control areas, pre-construction data and models that include habitat and environmental covariates help separate these explanations, but no design removes every uncertainty.

A practical checklist for evaluating a study

  • Which species, sex and life stage were tracked?
  • Where and during which migration seasons were animals monitored?
  • How many individuals, migration sequences and years were included?
  • Were data collected before construction, after construction, or at comparison sites?
  • How often did tags record positions, and how accurate were those positions?
  • Was the outcome a route change, stopover choice, speed, proximity, mortality or a population estimate?
  • Were construction, operation, habitat, weather and individual differences modeled separately?
  • Does the study estimate survival, reproduction or abundance, or only movement?
  • Are the findings tied to one turbine or facility, or supported across multiple regions?
  • What assumptions, missing data and uncertainty intervals accompany the result?

What a well-supported conclusion looks like

The strongest defensible wording is specific: tracking shows that a named species in a named place and period changed a measured aspect of movement in relation to turbines. Additional mortality and demographic evidence is then needed to determine whether that response harms population viability. The Wyoming pronghorn results demonstrate how animals can continue migrating while changing stopover and movement behavior. The Colorado bat video study demonstrates seasonal activity and repeated approaches at one turbine. Neither finding, alone, establishes a universal barrier or population decline.

Wind-energy assessments are consequently built from complementary evidence. Movement data identify where and when behavior changes; fatality monitoring identifies collision risk; demographic and population models test whether those effects could accumulate. Keeping those levels separate prevents both overclaiming harm and dismissing a disturbance that may matter under particular species, seasons or landscapes.
