After a crash left me with two broken ribs and bruised organs, outdoor road riding was temporarily out of reach. As I slowly regained mobility, a Wahoo KICKR BIKE PRO and Zwift gave me a way to reconnect with cycling from indoors. That is my experience—not medical advice or evidence that indoor riding is suitable for someone else with rib injuries.
Why I moved my rides indoors
In a first-person account published by T3 on September 13, 2026, I described breaking two ribs and bruising organs in a crash. Early in recovery, movement was limited. Walking helped me maintain some routine and mental perspective, but riding outside was not a realistic option at that stage.

As my mobility improved, I began cautiously trying indoor sessions. I adjusted my position on the Wahoo KICKR BIKE PRO and paid attention to what felt tolerable. The point was not to prove I could train through pain; it was to find a manageable way to spend time with cycling again.
What the Wahoo-and-Zwift routine gave me
For me, indoor riding offered a controlled alternative to the road while I was still working out what my body could tolerate. Zwift added the virtual-riding element, making the sessions feel connected to the broader experience of cycling rather than simply sitting on a bike indoors.

I found the routine useful during this period, and I hoped it would help me stay engaged with riding. I did not measure whether it preserved fitness or changed my recovery, and my experience cannot establish that it speeds healing or is safe for other people with similar injuries.
Two ways to build a Wahoo-and-Zwift setup
My account uses a dedicated smart bike, the KICKR BIKE PRO. A different route is to mount an existing bicycle on a compatible smart trainer. Zwift describes this approach and names Wahoo’s KICKR CORE 2 as one example; it is a setup option, not the equipment I said I used.

What to check before using a KICKR with Zwift
Requirements and control options depend on the particular KICKR model. Wahoo’s support guidance says a KICKR needs electrical power and a compatible bicycle for power, speed, and cadence data; full trainer control also calls for a compatible control device. Check the documentation for the exact trainer and device combination you plan to use.

Wahoo lists Zwift among the third-party apps that work with supported KICKR trainers. Its guidance also describes ERG mode for target-power training, Level mode for simulated grade resistance, and Passive mode for recording output while a third-party app runs. These modes should not be assumed to apply to every KICKR product. See Wahoo’s KICKR software and app guidance for compatibility details.

For the basics, consult Wahoo’s KICKR requirements and compatibility guidance and Zwift’s setup overview. Those explain the equipment side; they do not determine whether riding is appropriate during an injury recovery.

My shift indoors was one response to my own crash and gradual return to movement. A smart bike, trainer, or virtual route cannot make a medical decision for you. If you are recovering from an injury, ask a qualified clinician whether and when cycling is appropriate, and follow their guidance rather than using my experience as a benchmark.
