Flowers are shared microbial meeting places: bacteria and viruses can arrive on nectar, pollen, stigmas, petals and other floral tissues, then be picked up or deposited by visiting animals. In some experiments, pollinators became infected after floral contact. But finding or transferring a microbe is not the same as showing that flowers are a major source of disease in nature—or that the microbe harms the pollinator. Effects depend on the organism, the host and the floral environment.

How flowers become microbial meeting places

A flower is not a sterile surface. Microbes can reach it through animal visits, rain, air and other routes. Some persist or grow in nectar or on floral tissues; others may survive only long enough to be carried away by a visitor. The communities found can differ between flower species and between tissues. Nectar and stigmas have received especially substantial study, while knowledge of other floral sites is less complete, as summarized in the 2026 review “Diversity and sources of floral microbial communities”.

Visiting insects connect flowers. A visitor may leave microbes behind and later acquire microbes from another flower. Honeybees and bumblebees are among the most frequently reported transfer agents in the literature, but birds and aerial deposition can also contribute. A flower’s traits and its pattern of visitation can affect which microbes arrive, how long they persist and whether a visitor encounters them. These processes make flowers interfaces among plants, microbes and animals—not simply containers for pathogens.

Can pollinators catch diseases from flowers?

Floral contact can expose a pollinator to microbes associated with other animals. Reviews describe experimental cases in which pollinators were infected after contact with flowers. That establishes a possible transmission route, not how often it occurs in the wild or how important it is compared with transmission at nests, through direct contact or by other routes. As Rachel L. Vannette put it in her 2020 review, “Although experiments demonstrate that pollinators can be infected by pathogens after floral contact, the importance of flowers compared to other locations for transmission of animal-associated microbes to new hosts requires further study” (“The Floral Microbiome: Plant, Pollinator, and Microbial Perspectives”).

There is also a difference between detecting a microbe on a flower, showing that a visitor acquired it, and demonstrating infection or disease. Evidence of one step does not automatically establish the next, much less a decline in an individual’s health or a population-level effect. A 2021 review of floral traits and transmission notes a near-absence of experiments that manipulate floral traits to test whether those traits cause changes in transmission (“Floral traits affecting the transmission of beneficial and pathogenic pollinator-associated microbes”).

Different routes, different outcomes

“Microbes on flowers” covers several distinct mechanisms. The key questions are where the microbe is, which direction it moves and what outcome was measured.

Mechanism Typical site or route What evidence can show Main caution
Community assembly Nectar, stigmas, petals, pollen or anthers; animal, bird or aerial deposition Which microbes occur and how communities differ among tissues or routes Nectar and stigmas are better studied than many other floral tissues. 2026 review
Pollinator-associated pathogen transfer Contact with a contaminated flower, followed by acquisition by a visitor A route by which a microbe can reach a pollinator, including experimental infection in some cases Experiments do not establish how much transmission happens through flowers in nature relative to other routes. 2020 review; 2021 review
Nectar-microbe effects Microbial activity in nectar Potential changes to nectar nutrition, interactions among microbes or cues that influence foraging These effects need not involve infection, and consequences may vary by pollinator and context. 2022 review
Pollen-associated virus movement Virus-bearing pollen carried by pollinators between plants Pollinator-mediated spread of a virus among plants Plant-virus transmission does not by itself show that the virus causes disease in the pollinator. 2023 review

Nectar microbes can matter without infecting a pollinator

Microbes in nectar may change the food a visitor encounters or influence the cues it uses when choosing where to forage. Microbes can also interact with one another. These are possible routes by which floral microbes could affect pollinators without behaving as pathogens. A review of potential nectar-microbe effects discusses these pathways while emphasizing that health consequences can differ among hosts and ecological settings (2022 review).

That distinction matters when interpreting a change in feeding or flower choice. A behavioral effect is not automatically an infection, and a change in nectar is not automatically beneficial or harmful to every visitor. The organism, pollinator species, floral conditions and measured outcome all matter.

Pollen viruses: pollinators as carriers between plants

Some viruses are associated with pollen, which pollinators can move from one plant to another. This is a plant-transmission story: the pollinator acts as a carrier of virus-associated pollen. It should not be conflated with evidence that the virus infects or harms the pollinator. A 2023 review of the pollen virome describes this route and its consequences for plants and their interactions with pollinators (“The pollen virome: A review of pollen-associated viruses and consequences for plants and their interactions with pollinators”). Much of the evidence comes from controlled experiments involving one virus and one plant species, so it does not establish widespread pollinator illness.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about pollinator health

The detailed evidence on pollinator pathogens and floral traits focuses heavily on bees, particularly honeybees and bumblebees. A 2024 synthesis notes that other pollinator groups remain poorly represented, limiting how confidently findings can be generalized across pollinators (“Mechanisms and Consequences of Plant–Pollinator–Pathogen Interactions”).

It is also difficult to infer a simple effect from the number of flowers or visitors in a community: plant and pollinator abundance can vary together, and ecological factors can counteract one another. Reviews identify unresolved questions about the relative importance of floral transmission, the causal role of floral traits, and whether observed transmission changes pollinator fitness or population outcomes.

The defensible conclusion is therefore specific rather than universal: flowers can host and move microbes; floral contact has transmitted some pollinator-associated pathogens in experiments; nectar microbes may alter food or foraging; and pollen can carry viruses between plants. Those mechanisms do not establish that floral microbes as a whole either improve or damage pollinator health.
