Virtual desktop services let people use desktops or applications hosted on centralized infrastructure through a network connection. The device in front of the user displays and controls the session; the hosted environment supplies its operating system, applications, and computing resources.

What is virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)?

Virtual desktop infrastructure, or VDI, is the technology and management framework used to create and run virtual desktops centrally. Instead of running the full desktop environment on each endpoint, an organization hosts it on servers or cloud infrastructure and makes it available remotely.

For example, an employee can open a client app on a laptop, connect to a company-hosted Windows desktop, and use its installed business applications. The laptop provides the screen, keyboard, and connection; the hosted session does the desktop computing.

How is VDI different from DaaS?

VDI describes the underlying infrastructure and tools. Desktop as a service (DaaS) describes a provider-delivered service model for hosted desktops. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable: an organization can operate VDI itself, or use a provider that supplies some or more of the service.

DaaS does not automatically mean the provider manages everything. Depending on the offering, the customer may still be responsible for desktop images, applications, deployment, user profiles, monitoring, or support. Check the division of work rather than relying on the service label. AWS’s VDI overview discusses the distinction between VDI and provider-managed approaches, while Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop overview describes a service in which core components are provided by Microsoft but parts of the environment remain customer- or partner-managed.

What happens when someone connects?

A virtual desktop service includes more than the remote desktop itself. A client app or browser connects the user to service components that authenticate and broker the connection, route it through a gateway, and direct it to a session host. The session host runs the desktop or applications. The exact components and who operates them depend on the service and deployment.

What kinds of desktop experience can a service provide?

Full desktops or individual applications

A service can present a complete desktop, or publish individual applications so users can open them without working in a full remote desktop. Azure Virtual Desktop supports both full desktops and RemoteApp-style application publishing. Microsoft’s service overview documents these options.

Personal or pooled sessions

A personal desktop is assigned to an individual user. A pooled design shares session-host resources among users and can support multi-session access. These arrangements suit different needs: a dedicated desktop can provide an individual environment, while pooled sessions can serve users who do not each need a separate virtual machine. They are not automatically interchangeable; application compatibility, personalization, workload, and operational requirements matter.

For a concrete contrast, Microsoft describes Windows 365 Cloud PCs as dedicated Windows devices assigned to individual users, while Azure Virtual Desktop also supports pooled and multi-session configurations. These are examples of different service models, not a complete market comparison. See Microsoft’s Windows 365 architecture guidance and the Azure Virtual Desktop overview.

Who manages the service?

Responsibilities can be divided among a customer, a cloud provider, and sometimes a partner. A useful way to compare deployments is to identify who operates each layer:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Customer-managed VDI: The organization operates much of the desktop environment and its lifecycle on infrastructure it controls or rents.
  • Provider-managed infrastructure: A cloud provider supplies some platform or infrastructure components, while the customer retains selected deployment and desktop-management duties.
  • DaaS: A provider delivers hosted desktops and may take on more ongoing administration, but the customer’s remaining responsibilities vary by offering.

Before choosing a service, establish responsibility for infrastructure, connection brokering and gateways, desktop images, operating systems, applications, user profiles, monitoring, and user support. Azure Virtual Desktop is one example where core service components are provided by Microsoft but some environment tasks remain with customers or partners; consult Microsoft’s overview for its stated division.

What should you compare when evaluating virtual desktop services?

  • Management boundary: Identify who maintains infrastructure, connection components, images, operating systems, applications, profiles, monitoring, and support.
  • Desktop and session model: Determine whether users need personal, dedicated desktops or pooled resources, and whether a workload can use multi-session access.
  • Workload and operating system: Check support for the required operating systems, applications, graphics or compute capacity, and storage.
  • Access and connectivity: Verify supported endpoint devices and client methods, then consider the network performance and reliability the workload requires.
  • Capacity and cost structure: Understand how capacity scales and which infrastructure, licensing, and administrative costs remain with the customer. There is no single cost or savings outcome that applies to every deployment.

For instance, AWS describes Amazon WorkSpaces as a managed cloud desktop service with Windows and Linux options, personalized dedicated desktops, and centralized management. Those characteristics may be relevant to a dedicated-desktop requirement, but the service’s current features and responsibilities should be checked in AWS’s Amazon WorkSpaces information.

What virtual desktop services do—and do not—guarantee

Central hosting can make desktop and application management more centralized and let users access a hosted environment from different device types. It does not, by itself, guarantee lower costs, stronger security, better performance, or simpler administration. Those outcomes depend on the workload, configuration, licensing, network connection, capacity choices, and who handles ongoing management.
