Yes—video face swap can work when someone turns their head, especially during a partial turn. A full profile is harder: fewer facial features remain visible for the software to track, so the replacement may soften, distort, flicker, or disappear briefly. If you mean the entire video frame is rotated 90 degrees, that is a separate orientation issue; rotate the clip upright or check the tool’s input requirements.
Why a sideways head turn is difficult
A face changes shape in the image as it turns. The nose, eyes, and other landmarks can become partly hidden, perspective shifts, and lighting may fall differently across the visible side. Fast movement and motion blur make it harder to follow the face consistently from frame to frame.
Google’s MediaPipe Face Landmarker documentation says the task detects face landmarks and facial expressions in images and video, and returns a face mesh, blendshape scores, and transformation matrices. That describes landmarking capabilities—not a guarantee that a face-swap tool will create a convincing profile. Google’s ML Kit face-detection concepts also explain that detectable landmarks vary with face orientation relative to the camera.

Those stages help explain why clear input footage matters, but the guide is not an independent comparison of tools.

What results to expect at different angles
Partial turns are generally more promising than a full profile. In the directly relevant article, author Gagan Bhangu reports that harder turns can produce softer edges, eye or cheek distortion, flicker, or a temporary loss of the replacement. These are reported observations, not results from controlled testing.
There is no established universal angle cutoff or independent success rate for sideways video face swap. Results depend on the footage and the software, so test the actual clip rather than assuming a particular turn will work.

How to test a clip before processing the whole video
- Clarify what “sideways” means. If the person turns their head in an upright clip, assess that turn. If the whole frame is rotated, correct the video orientation first or check whether the tool handles rotated input.
- Choose a clear sample. Use a sharp reference image and source clip, with the face large enough to retain detail. Even, soft lighting and the original, less-compressed footage can help preserve visible facial information.
- Test the most difficult moment. Process a short segment that includes the strongest turn before committing to the full video.
- Inspect adjacent frames. Check the eyes, cheek, jaw, and face boundary for flicker, sliding, softness, or a brief loss of the replacement. A single good frame does not establish that the swap remains stable through the movement.
- Adjust expectations to the footage. Full profiles, quick turns, blur, hair or hands covering the face, and strong lighting changes are harder cases than a gradual partial turn.
What to compare when evaluating your result
- Head angle: Compare a partial turn with the most profile-like moment.
- Visible features: Note whether the eyes, nose, cheek, and jaw remain unobstructed.
- Movement: Look for speed and blur during the turn.
- Lighting: Check for abrupt changes or strong shadows across the face.
- Image detail: Consider face size, resolution, and compression.
- Stability over time: Review several consecutive frames, not just the clearest still.
