Veterans can seek support without first enrolling in VA health care: contact a VA medical center or Vet Center, or use the Veterans Crisis Line for urgent help. Each route serves a different purpose, and eligibility and privacy terms vary. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to an emergency room; do not wait for a benefits decision.

Choose the right route for the situation

Route Best for Access and eligibility What it provides
Veterans Crisis Line Immediate emotional crisis or concern about a Veteran Call 988 and select 1, text 838255, or use online chat; VA describes it as free, private, and available 24/7. Crisis support and connection to help; it is not a disability-claim service.
Vet Center Ongoing readjustment counseling and related support Eligibility depends on the service. VA says enrollment in VA health care and service connection are not required for Vet Center services. Community-based counseling, referrals, and some benefits-application help.
VA medical center or VA health care Mental health care through VA medical services Some mental health services are available without enrollment, but eligibility differs by service. Contact VA to confirm your options. Clinical mental health care and, where applicable, connection to other VA services.
Emergency department or 911 Immediate danger or urgent medical need Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. A VA medical center is also an option; VA says discharge status or VA health care enrollment does not prevent emergency access there. Emergency response and treatment, not a routine counseling or claims pathway.
VA benefits office or recognized VSO Questions about disability benefits or help with a claim VA can explain the process; a VA-recognized or congressionally chartered Veterans Service Organization (VSO) may assist with paperwork and representation. Benefits information and claims assistance, not crisis counseling.

How to find non-emergency mental health care

If you already use VA health care

Ask your primary care provider to arrange a mental health appointment. VA also lists 877-222-8387 for help finding care options; check the VA mental health page for current contact details and operating hours.

If you are not enrolled in VA health care

Contact a VA medical center or your nearest Vet Center and ask what services you may use. VA states, “You don’t need to be enrolled in VA health care to get care.” That applies to the mental health access options described by VA; it does not mean every service is available to every person. Confirm eligibility for the specific care you need.

Vet Centers are community-based and non-medical. Depending on eligibility, they offer individual and group counseling, couples and family counseling, military sexual trauma counseling, readjustment counseling, bereavement counseling, substance-use assessment and referral, and help applying for VA benefits. Use VA’s Vet Center locator or call the contact number on VA’s Vet Center information page to find a local center.

How to get urgent or crisis support

If you or someone you care about is in crisis, contact the Veterans Crisis Line: call 988 and select 1, text 838255, or start an online chat. VA describes these options as private, free, and available around the clock.

If there is immediate danger or a need for emergency medical care, call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or go directly to a VA medical center. Do not delay emergency care while trying to establish eligibility for another program.

Emergency suicide care under the COMPACT Act

Some Veterans in suicidal crisis may qualify for emergency suicide care at VA or non-VA facilities, regardless of enrollment in VA health care. VA’s suicide-prevention information and its 2026 VA Health Care Benefits Overview describe treatment, transportation, and follow-up care under the COMPACT Act. The overview says eligible care may include up to 30 days of inpatient or residential treatment and up to 90 days of outpatient care; extensions may be possible. These are program limits, not a guarantee that a particular person or service will be covered. VA must assess eligibility and coverage, so ask VA about your situation when it is safe to do so—but seek emergency care first if needed.

What confidentiality means at a Vet Center

Vet Centers provide confidential counseling, but do not assume that confidentiality is absolute or identical in every circumstance. A Mesa Vet Center page says information is not shared without permission except in a life-threatening situation, and that its records cannot be accessed by other VA offices, the Department of Defense, military units, or community providers. That is a statement from one local center, not a universal privacy guarantee. Ask your own Vet Center how its privacy rules apply before sharing information.

How to ask about disability benefits and claims help

VA says a Veteran may qualify for disability benefits for a mental health condition, including PTSD, that developed before, during, or after service. This general eligibility information does not establish whether an individual claim will be approved; VA evaluates each claim.

For benefits questions, VA lists 800-827-1000, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time, on its benefits hotline page. A VSO recognized by VA or chartered by Congress may help prepare claims and paperwork and may advocate for or represent claimants. Vet Centers may also help eligible people with benefits applications. VA’s accredited representative search can help you find recognized claims assistance.

Will seeking mental health care affect work credentials?

VA says, “Being diagnosed with a mental health condition or seeking mental health care doesn’t automatically put work-related credentials, such as security clearances, at risk.” The phrase “doesn’t automatically” matters: this is not a guarantee about every employer, credential, or individual case. For a specific concern, ask the relevant credentialing authority or a qualified adviser.
