UPI is a payment system that lets you send money between bank accounts or pay merchants through a supported app. Your UPI ID tells the system where to direct a payment, the app lets you manage and make payments, and your UPI PIN authorizes a transaction. They have different jobs: sharing your UPI ID can help someone pay you, but sharing your PIN can let someone authorize a payment from your account.
What is UPI?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) describes UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, as an instant payment system built over IMPS. It connects participating bank accounts so users can make person-to-person transfers and merchant payments through supported apps. UPI is not a bank account: the money is debited from or credited to the bank account linked in the app. NPCI’s UPI overview explains the system.
UPI payments are available around the clock. NPCI’s FAQ says payments are instant and available 24/7 regardless of bank working hours, though an individual payment can still show as pending or fail while banks process it. Check NPCI’s FAQ for current operating details.

| Term | What it does | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| UPI ID (VPA) | Acts as a payment address for a person or merchant. | You can share it with someone who needs to pay you; it is not your authorization PIN. NPCI describes UPI IDs and payment addressing. |
| UPI PIN | Authorizes a payment from a linked account when the app asks for it. | Keep it private. Never disclose it to someone claiming to be a bank, app, or support representative. NPCI’s FAQ gives this security guidance. |
| UPI app | Provides the interface to link an eligible bank account, choose a payment method, authorize payments, and check transaction status. | BHIM is one UPI app, not the only one. Available features depend on the app and bank. BHIM’s official site describes its supported options. |
| Bank account | Holds the funds that are debited or credited in a UPI transaction. | The app must be able to find and link the account; support depends on the bank and app. See NPCI’s UPI product overview. |
How to set up UPI
The exact screens differ by app and bank, but the basic process is to register in a supported payment service provider (PSP) app and link an eligible bank account. The mobile number verified in the app should match the number registered with the bank, so the app can identify eligible accounts. The available accounts and setup steps depend on the bank and app. NPCI outlines the registration and account-linking process.
#1 Best Overall
- Install and open a supported UPI app, then complete its registration and mobile verification steps.
- Choose the option to add or link a bank account. Select the account the app finds for your verified mobile number.
- Follow the app’s instructions to set a UPI PIN if required. Some setup or PIN-reset flows may require bank credentials such as a debit card; follow only the instructions shown inside your bank or UPI app.
- Review the linked account in the app before making a payment. Do not share your PIN during setup or with anyone offering to help.
How to send money with UPI
Depending on the app and recipient, you can start a payment using a UPI ID, a QR code, a mobile number, or account number and IFSC. Account number and IFSC are another supported payment route, but whether it appears in your app depends on the app and bank. BHIM, for example, lists transfers by UPI ID or mobile number, QR scanning, and account number plus IFSC among its options. See BHIM’s official feature information.
- Open the UPI app and choose the send or pay option.
- Select the recipient route available to you: enter a UPI ID or mobile number, scan a QR code, or enter account details if your app supports that route.
- Check the recipient name and the amount displayed in the app. Do not authorize if either is wrong or unexpected.
- Enter your UPI PIN only when the app prompts you to authorize the payment.
- Check the transaction result in the app and keep the reference details if you may need to contact your bank or app support.
How to receive money—and what a collect request means
To receive a payment, you can give the payer your UPI ID or show them a QR code generated by your app. You do not need to tell them your UPI PIN. A collect request is different: it asks you, as the payer, to approve a payment in your app. Approving it can authorize money to leave your account, so reject requests you did not expect. NPCI’s FAQ explains collect requests and payment approval.

A PIN is for authorizing a transaction, not for receiving funds. If someone says you must enter your PIN to accept a payment, do not proceed.
UPI PIN safety and common misconceptions
- Never share your PIN. NPCI’s instruction is: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” It also says bank customer support will never ask for it. Read NPCI’s security guidance.
- Check the payee and amount before authorizing. A PIN authorizes the payment shown in the app; it does not merely confirm that you want to receive money.
- Keep your PIN separate from your UPI ID. An ID or QR can be used to address a payment; a PIN is private authorization information.
- Do not assume all UPI apps have identical options. Account linking, payment routes, limits, and optional features can differ by bank and app.
UPI limits and payment availability
NPCI’s FAQ lists an ordinary UPI transaction limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, with higher ceilings for specified categories. This is an NPCI-stated ceiling, not a promise that every bank or app will permit that amount for every user or payment. Check your bank or app for the limit currently applicable to your account and transaction type. NPCI’s FAQ lists the limit and category exceptions.
Rank #3
UPI is designed for 24/7 payments, but availability does not guarantee that every transaction completes immediately. Bank processing, a decline, or a pending status can affect the outcome.
What to do if a UPI payment is pending, failed, or sent by mistake
Payment is pending or the account was debited
Open the transaction details in your app and check its current status. Keep the transaction reference, then use the app’s or bank’s support route if the status does not resolve or the beneficiary has not received the funds. NPCI describes real-time reversals for declined transactions, but says pending processing by a beneficiary bank can take longer; there is no single resolution time or outcome that applies to every bank and app. See NPCI’s guidance on transaction status and reversals.
Payment went to the wrong recipient
UPI payments cannot be stopped after initiation. Contact your bank or app promptly with the transaction reference, but do not assume a mistaken transfer is guaranteed to be recoverable. NPCI’s FAQ covers payment and complaint guidance.

Optional UPI features: what you do and do not need
Ordinary UPI transfers do not require NFC. NFC is relevant to optional Tap & Pay flows; standard app-based payments and QR payments use different interactions. UPI also supports multiple addressing methods, so you can use whichever route your app and the recipient support. NPCI’s product information covers UPI features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my UPI PIN the same as my debit card PIN?
A UPI PIN authorizes UPI transactions. Do not treat it as a PIN to share with anyone; follow your bank or app’s instructions for setting or resetting it.
Can someone send me money using only my UPI ID?
A UPI ID is a payment address that can be used to address a payment. Never share your UPI PIN; it is not needed simply to receive money.
