North Cork tillage farmer Tom Barry says his 2026 harvest was the earliest of his career: it began on July 3 and was complete by July 31. The hot, dry summer helped him move quickly, but severe drought later affected his spring beans, which struggled to yield 1.5 tonnes per acre. In an account published by the Irish Examiner on October 1, 2026, Barry describes combining crop-timing changes, soil and nutrient management, and energy investments to improve resilience on his own farm.
What happened during Barry’s 2026 harvest?
Barry says harvest started and finished earlier than at any point in his farming career. The dry, hot summer allowed rapid harvest work, but the season also brought a sharp contrast: his later spring beans struggled to yield 1.5 tonnes per acre after severe drought. These are observations from his farm, not regional yield figures or an independent assessment of weather trends.
The account is a first-person farm report in the Irish Examiner’s Signpost Series. Barry farms in Killavullen, North Cork, and identifies John Mahon as his adviser through the Teagasc Tillage Signpost Programme. His reported dates, yields, and costs describe his operation and should not be treated as sector benchmarks.
Why is Barry sowing winter crops earlier?
Barry says he has shifted winter-crop sowing two to three weeks earlier, from early or mid-October to late September. His aim is to give crops more time to establish and advance before possible drought spells. Earlier sowing is not a risk-free adjustment: Barry notes that farmers also need to consider barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) risk.

For the 2026 season, he says he began sowing KWS Tayo hybrid winter rye on September 21, followed by winter barley on September 23. He hoped to sow winter wheat in the first week of October, weather permitting. He describes newer varieties with Ryd2 and Ryd3 genes as helpful on his farm, but his account does not provide comparative trial results, so it does not establish how they perform against alternatives elsewhere.
How does he use cover crops?
Barry reports sowing more than 150 acres of cover crops containing kale and leafy turnip. After straw removal, he disks the ground, then sows a week later using a precision applicator attached to the front of a tractor, with a flat roller behind. He says the cover was dense by mid-September; Teagasc is to monitor nutrient uptake.

Barry intends to incorporate the cover crop before spring barley and avoid applying artificial phosphorus and potassium to that crop. He also sees the cover as potential fodder if spring conditions are difficult. These are his intended uses, not a guarantee of a particular nutrient response or feed supply.

What other soil and cropping measures does he describe?
Barry presents resilience as a combination of farm-management choices rather than the result of one intervention. Alongside cover crops, his account lists organic manures, crop rotations, correcting soil pH, reducing soil compaction, improving soil fertility, using less artificial fertiliser, and chopping and incorporating straw. These measures address different parts of crop and soil management; their usefulness depends on the farm, fields, crops, and operating conditions.

What do his fuel and solar figures show?
Barry reports using 9.41 litres of fuel per acre for ploughing and 5.9 litres per acre for sowing winter grain, or 15.3 litres per acre combined. He calculates that fuel costs have raised his sowing costs by almost €11 per acre since December 2021, adding €5,800 for his 2026/27 sowing season. Those are figures for his own operation, not an average for Irish farms.
He also reports approximately €3,500 in savings over 12 months from a grant-aided photovoltaic system. His account does not state the system’s size or installation cost, so the saving cannot be used as a general payback estimate. Barry additionally lists batteries, LED lighting, and an electric car among his energy-efficiency measures.

What can farmers take from Barry’s account?
Barry’s approach is to act on factors he can influence—crop timing, soil condition, nutrient management, and energy use—while acknowledging exposure to fuel prices and wider geopolitical forces. His experience illustrates possible decisions, not a universal prescription: earlier sowing involves crop-stage risks, cover-crop plans depend on establishment and intended use, and reported fuel or energy savings are specific to his farm.
