To make an AI image feel like a real film snapshot, describe an ordinary, specific moment, then add a few compatible cues for framing, light, color, and film texture. Keep the imperfections restrained unless you want a deliberately damaged look. Camera and film-stock names can suggest an aesthetic, but they do not guarantee a technical simulation or the same result across image generators.
Build the prompt around a believable moment
A casual snapshot starts with what is happening, not with a list of effects. Name the subject, action, place, and moment; ordinary activity gives the image a reason to feel candid rather than staged. Runway’s Gen-4 Image Prompting Guide, for example, uses a nighttime skate-park scene to illustrate a disposable-camera look.
Then describe how the picture was captured: the camera’s distance and angle, whether the subject is centered, and whether the crop feels neat or slightly awkward. Adobe’s AI image prompt examples recommends specificity about composition, environment, and aesthetic details. A prompt that says “slightly off-center, caught mid-conversation” gives more direction than “make it look real.”
Use a simple prompt formula
Combine the scene and the photographic treatment in this order:

A candid snapshot of two friends laughing in a cramped kitchen after midnight, caught mid-conversation with slightly awkward framing; direct on-camera flash, hard shadows, muted warm color, gentle vignette, modest 35mm-style grain, natural expressions, not a polished studio portrait.

The scene establishes the moment; the rest describes the way it should look. Remove instructions that pull in a different direction: dramatic anamorphic lighting, immaculate composition, and a polished studio finish can make the result read more like a cinematic still than an everyday snapshot.

Choose film cues that work together
Pick a small set of descriptors that support the same mood. Runway’s guide separates its disposable-camera example—night flash, vignette, slight overexposure, and muted color—from a damaged-film treatment using grain, scratches, light leaks, soft focus, and wear. Those are distinct directions, not a checklist to combine automatically.

Runway’s damaged-film keyword collection includes “Grainy texture, slightly overexposed, muted colors, visible film scratches, damaged film, light leaks, spontaneous, timeless, soft focus, characteristic Polaroid aesthetic, historical wear and tear.” Treat that as a vendor-provided descriptor list for a worn aesthetic, not as the recipe for every snapshot.

Refine the result one dimension at a time
If the image is close but not right, change one category per revision so you can tell which instruction helped. Adobe notes that small prompt adjustments can produce dramatically different outputs.
- Fix the scene first. Make the subject, action, place, and moment clear if the image feels generic or posed.
- Adjust framing. Try a closer distance, a tilted angle, an off-center subject, or a less perfect crop if the image looks too composed.
- Change the light. Replace flash with window light or dim available light—or the reverse—rather than changing several other cues at the same time.
- Tune color and texture. Adjust muted or warm color, grain strength, or vignette individually. Remove scratches or light leaks if the image looks damaged rather than casually photographed.
- Reduce conflicting polish. If the result feels like a film still, remove cues such as dramatic cinematic lighting or professional composition and emphasize the candid moment.
Compare each version against the quality you want: believable scene, casual composition, fitting light, and restrained texture. The wording is guidance to a generator, not a control that guarantees a specific photographic process.

What camera and film names can—and cannot—do
Terms such as “disposable camera,” “35mm-style grain,” or a named film stock can communicate a visual direction. They are not reliable technical controls across generators. Runway and Adobe document examples from their own tools; neither guide establishes how different models respond in a controlled cross-model comparison. Google’s image-generation documentation is about API availability and migration, not a general comparison of prompt behavior.
For that reason, describe the visible properties you want—flash, muted color, imperfect framing, subtle grain—rather than relying on a camera or stock name alone. Adobe’s guide puts the principle plainly: “Specificity is key when crafting prompts for an AI image generator.”
Examples are model-specific, and availability changes
The examples above draw on Runway’s Gen-4 prompting guide and Adobe’s Firefly examples. They are vendor documentation, not independent tests, and do not show that the same prompt will behave identically in another image generator.
For developers using Google’s image API, its image-generation documentation says Imagen models are shut down and no longer available in the Gemini API. The page, last updated 2026-09-17 UTC, directs developers to Nano Banana, names gemini-2.5-flash-image and Nano Banana 2 models such as gemini-3.1-flash-image, and describes migration from generate_images to generate_content. Model names and access can change; check the current documentation before building around a specific API. This API status does not determine which consumer image tools are available in every region or account.
