To reply to a Tripadvisor review, claim and verify your business listing, open the Management Center, select the review, write a relevant public response, add your display name and business role, then submit it for moderation. A good reply thanks the reviewer, addresses the specific feedback, and follows Tripadvisor’s privacy and content rules.

Claim your listing and open the review

  1. Claim your business through Tripadvisor’s Owners entry point. A representative must claim the listing and verify their identity to access the Management Center. See Tripadvisor’s listing claim and management guidance.

  2. Sign in to your verified Management Center account. From the profile menu, open My Business. You can also use the response option in a review notification email.

  3. Select the Respond to Reviews card or choose See all reviews, then open the review you want to answer. The review list can be filtered by response status, rating, date, and language.

  4. Write your response, enter the display name and business role you want shown, and submit it. Tripadvisor’s Management Center instructions say there is no character limit, but recommend keeping responses concise.

A submitted reply is marked Response Pending while Tripadvisor reviews it. Once approved, it becomes Response Published. Tripadvisor says the majority are posted within a few business days, though review can take longer when guideline compliance is in question. You cannot edit a response after submitting it; to correct one, delete it and submit a revised version.

Choose the right approach for the review

Review type What to focus on Useful next step
Positive Thank the reviewer and mention a specific detail they praised. Reinforce the positive experience without using the same stock reply for every guest.
Negative Thank the reviewer, address the concrete concern, and provide relevant context without becoming defensive. When appropriate, explain a meaningful corrective step or invite the guest to contact the business.

Replying to a positive review

Make the reply personal by referring to something the guest actually mentioned, such as a dish, room feature, staff interaction, or attraction. A specific acknowledgement is more useful to future visitors than a generic “Thanks for your review.” Tripadvisor advises against repeating the same response across reviews because it can come across as insincere.

Replying to a negative review

Respond promptly, stay courteous, and address the issue the reviewer raised. If an apology is warranted, make it sincere. When there is a meaningful response to the problem, say what action is being taken and who is responsible for it. Answer questions that future visitors may still have, and add relevant context factually rather than arguing with the reviewer.

Write with prospective guests in mind as well as the reviewer. Management Responses can appear in search engines, so avoid repeating hurtful or inflammatory wording unnecessarily. If you need more information to resolve the issue, you may invite the guest to contact the business or include an email address, but remember that the reply is public.

Use a clear structure and keep the reply professional

A practical structure is: thank the reviewer, refer to a specific point in the review, respond factually to the concern or praise, explain an appropriate action or contact route, and close courteously. This is a useful writing approach, not a required Tripadvisor template.

Tripadvisor requires responses to be relevant to its users and grounded in firsthand management or staff experience. Its Management Responses Guidelines state: “Owner responses must be based on first-hand experiences of management or their staff members.” Do not guess who the reviewer is, disclose guest details, or make claims you cannot support.

  • Keep the tone professional and the response easy to read.
  • Do not include promotional pitches, loyalty-program offers, or irrelevant URLs; Tripadvisor reserves the right to reject URLs.
  • Avoid HTML, excessive all-caps, slang, repeated text, formatting problems, and unreadable machine translation.
  • Do not write a response in two languages; Tripadvisor says it rejects bilingual responses.

Because replies are visible beneath reviews to anyone viewing the site, treat each one as public communication—not a private exchange.

When to report a review instead of disputing it publicly

You can report a review through the Management Center if it appears on the wrong property, violates Tripadvisor’s review guidelines, or seems suspicious. Reporting does not guarantee removal. Tripadvisor says it will not arbitrate factual disputes between a business and a reviewer; as its bad-review guidance puts it, “Tripadvisor won’t arbitrate or referee factual disputes between parties.”

If the review is simply inaccurate from your perspective, use a Management Response to present the business’s account calmly. A report may be appropriate when there is a specific policy or property issue, but it is not an appeal process for disagreement alone.

What a thoughtful response may signal to travelers

Tripadvisor’s business article attributes a 2015 company survey finding that 87% of travelers said a thoughtful response to a bad review improved their impression of a property. Separately, an Ipsos MORI study conducted with Tripadvisor and reported in a 2019 investor-relations release found that 77% of travelers were more likely to book after seeing owners respond to reviews. These are dated, company-published survey findings about different outcomes, not guarantees that a reply will change every traveler’s decision.
